Hodge - If I was going to get married you would be the man but I think I will pass on that. I guess Prowler was too out of it to see that I carried his adorable son up the hill to get him out of the drama and obviously wouldn't have known that I played goo-goo with both kids throughout the day. Great kids, by the way.

Hey Pep- I think he was a little busy to see who carried Gojo's pack, too. I don't know how he connected me to the 'wife' and 'herb' ideas, since I don't have either, but that is a lot of people to meet, all at once.

BTW if that hubby possition ever comes available..... keep me in mind, eh ;-)

gforce - I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to say good bye to you and CMB (although CMB probably would have expected a hug and I may have gotten cooties!). I second the "when's the next hike?" idea and also that I am waiting for bro Hodgeman to lead us to Canada.

This trip totally rocked. I am sorry that the Prowler stuff is taking over the trip reports.

100% Impressed
So, here's are the mega-phone platitudes...

From over here on the left coast, you folks deserve some sort of recognition. An award for meritorious service. Valiantry.

In the face of adversity, character stands out. It's not just the trip it's what happens and what you do about it. And I'm not just talkin' about the skeeters.

Geez - Enough with this 'wife' thing.... Y'all are makin' me noivous! He He

gforce - This trip was awesome! It's pretty darned close to top five, on a very long list.

C'mon on up, anytime.... If any of you are really anxious, I have one reserved tent space left, for Yoho NP, Aug 12 to 18. This ones in my top three. Look for the 'Room for one tent' thread

BCpalooza sounds great. Most of the really 'premier' alpine spots won't accomodate large groups, though. We'll have to work on that idea.

Hey gearjunkie....
In response to your questions:
Gojo and I fished; he used spinning gear, I used flys
We both caught a few small Brookies and Cutthroat. I only fished Windy Lake, but I think he fished Ouzel, Windy, Dewey and Rainbow. Most were in the 5-8" range. I think he was using a Mepps some of the time. Iused a bead-head nymph for the best results.

I think there were some berries below Rainbow

The msoquitoes were the worst below Russell Lake and got a liitle better above timberline. Wind helped. Horse Flies at Rainbow due to ...horses.

Fire restrictions were on. We left before the signs went up and the Ranger was notifying hikers along the way.

aero,
Thanks for the info (and great pics!).

I'm heading there 1 week from today, and can hardly think of anything else.

I'll have to try some wet flys this year for the lakes. I used only drys in the past, with mixed results.

Hey Paloozies - Gear Question
Hopefully all of the terrain will recover by the time I hit the trail one month and 2 days from today - hahaha.

Any comments on what gear you brought and found you didn't need? What about stuff you wished you'd brought but didn't? Were you warm enough? Too warm? Dry enough? etc...........

All the pics are spectacular, BTW. Frankly, I think it's cruel for y'all to post 'em......

I was just wondering . . .
I'm not trying to stir up any problems, but in light of the other stuff, I hope none of you felt that I was totally unprepared, not self-sufficient, and bascially depending on you to take care of me?!? I kinda' started worrying about it after I read the other posts. There were a few serious items (stove, tent, water filter), that I should have probably had of my own. If I made you guys feel like . . . sorry.

Newgirl...........you kicked all major forms of a$$! You set some reasonable limits for yourself, brought the right gear and were wide open to anything you could learn from the group. Then you had to hike out solo on your first trip- not easy. You looked like an old hand up at Ouzel, cooking dinner with the bug net on. Good job.

Cabana Boy; Nail clippers
You know, on my last backpack trip a few weeks ago with my wife (not really an outdoorsy type, but a trooper on this trip) and son, we were talking about what we missed the most as we sat on the somewhat uncomfortable granite. I said it was the pineapple guy near the pool at the place we stayed in Hawaii last year: "Would you like a slice of chilled fresh pineapple, sir?"

OK, maybe I missed the nail clippers joke earlier, ng. Wanna fill me in??
martyb

7/23/02

ng,
I seem to remember you basically telling everyone, "Hey, I'm totally new at this. What should I bring?" Everyone told you to bring a few basics and to rely on them to share stoves, etc. Therefore, you shouldn't worry at all about others' perceptions of your prep - sounds like you did a superb job. BTW, how the heck did you hike 8-9 miles on trails with a backpack on in only 3 hours?! Next thing you know, Aero'll have you signing up for the track team!
martyb
11:00:31 AM
7/23/02

NG,
So you got voted off earlier than expected!!! Chin up sister!!! all those items will be had in the future if you choose to continue to hike and backpack. Don't let this be a one time thing because all the goodness given will have been for not. Time will pass, newergirl will age and become a little bit more user friendly giving you more time to pursue what interests you. Remember you have a life to live also.

We can't ban you,,,,

I broke my thumb and index nails on my right hand really bad. They were all jaggy and stuff. I really wished that I had some darned nail clippers, esp. after I used Hodge or Gforce's (can't remember who) swiss army knife scissors. It just got worse.
newgirl

Clippers
Aha! Well, one good thing to have is a nail file surface on one of your Swiss Army knife thingees. Also, any respectable fisherman/woman should have nail clippers for clipping excess line off of their knots. Clearly, the hacks you were with were woefully unprepared!!
martyb

You should have asked around. I had a clipper and emery board. I always pack'em. I like to keep my nails cut low for easy cleaning.
