om - I will be sorry if I don't get to hike with you this summer. It has become such a tradition. Maybe I will have to come east.

I like your comment about curbing enthusiasm. It reminds me of a Kurt Vonnegut quote: "peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from God"

yo bear!!!

You gonna send me any pics from that "easy" dayhike we took up Carter Mtn, or not?

You back home now, or are you down in Mexico? It's been really nice here, in the 50's to 60's lately. Temp's in the 20's next couple of days.

Me, Rip, Gordon, and Gordon's brother took a dayhike last weekend. Yup, there were a couple of travelers with us. Pretty mellow hike through some foothills.

Hey Chief! The snow was pretty good up on Red Lodge Mtn. last friday on a few runs. I took the day off and tried out my new Volkls. M was good but was getting skied down. The upper mountain was getting rocky so unless they get some more snow (which dosen't sound like it's going to happen), bring your rock skis.

A friend and his father (70 ish) went up on Monday and didn't even get out of their vehicle. They said you could almost see right through the snow to the dirt. I think I'll be waiting a little longer. Maybe do another dayhike Saturday, if mom will let me go out and play.

I Tried, I Really Did
The "Longest Thread" thread forced me to bring this to the top.

Plus, thinking about the great folks and the time we had together is cheering me up. A person can only look at Martyb in a Peruvian hat so many times.

So, if Montanapalooza was so great (and it was) how come you guys aren't signed up for Sierrapalooza?

Sure would be nice to be able to return favors.

Thanks for posting that BM! I've run across Blaise Dilulo in the backcountry when he was a wilderness ranger. He was known for tracking down litterers or others violating backcountry rules over 20 miles. He used to pack out people's garabage, sometimes 80lbs worth.

I liked this part:

A report for that year shows the crew cut through 1,340 feet of trail to the outlet of Duggan Lake and 1,106 feet below Impasse Falls.

"All of this was through solid rock with side slopes commonly in excess of 100 percent and some overhanging cliffs," the report said.

DiLulo said some of the gaps in the trail along the cliffs below Impasse were 50 feet deep. The holes were filled with rubble, sometimes from other blasts. The rock was secured by steel anchors, cable and wooden timbers.

Understand yer gettin some snow up there today - the Nat'l Weather Svc. is showing the highest high temp for the next week will be about 35. Guess I better bring a coat...

This article, while unrelated to any aspect the 'palooza itself, features two people (Teresa and Pat) that we ran into while doing the same trail in August '02. We kind of leap-frogged each other down the trail, and they invited us into their luxurious cabin for beer and coffee (milk & cookies for Cameron) in Alpine at the end of the trail. Looks like they're doing some good things....
