Official Notice
I'm definitely out for this one. I'll be changing jobs in June and there's no way I'll get any time off that soon. Plus G00SE will be using most of his vacation time for our honeymoon. I hate to miss this one worse than anything! I've never been to Montana before and it sounded like such a good hike. Maybe I'll see you all at Montanapalooza II?

Here's a webcam showing current conditions at the Sinclair station in Cooke City (which appears to be the cultural center):

http://users.iglide.net/sschluter/news.htm

I spent hours happily watching this gas station after leaving the
trail in 98 (while contemporaneously consuming mass quantities of "real" food.

Everybody has a snowmobile, pickup, and at least one dog.

Coolest town I've ever seen.

yo pepperdog....since i am flying again this year, i will be buying fuel out "there"...but NOT at REI...heh....you made me spend too much money there before llamarama!
looking forward to hiking with you again and this crew....

3/04/02

Damn right you won't!

Because there is no REI out here.

I am sure one of us could have a supply of fuel for everyone, just need to know what type beforehand. Of course, that's only 5 months away so no real hurry.

I'm in Aero, but I might not be able to do the whole trip. I'm in a friend's wedding the weekend before (@ Rock Creek ironically) and I will already have to take days off for that. But I definitely want to try a few days out there and meet everybody and try to get some bp experience!
newgirl

Yeah, that'll work. You could go part-way up and back for a couple days worth of Beartooth Experience. Maybe we could work it into the vehicle- shuttling situation.

Yeah, good idea. I'd be up to help out on that score. I think Belowzero wants to do it too, so we can head out on our own. I won't need a "guide" to help!

Newgirl,
How many days are you going to have?

The prettiest part of the trip (IMHO) is from Fossil Lake to East Rosebud. But, it would probably take you just as much time, if not more, to get from East Rosebud to Fossil as it would from the other side to Fossil. You should just try to get the time off to do the entire trip. You won't regret it.

Otherwise, check out Aero's intinerary and work from there. If you come in from East Rosebud, you will have more elevation gain to get to where they will be. My guess would be Dewey or Twin Outlets Lake.

Chief

Chief
To tell the truth I haven't tried to plan out the schedule very carefully. I just know that I have these two events right in a row. I also have work, Newergirl, and there is a possibility that summer session classes will effect it too. I will try to get the whole thing clear and get back to you and Aero about what my options are.

Crazy Mike,
You gonna go through Billings or Cody? If you come through CoDy, I'll take you out golfing, maybe even send you to Cassies with the single guys. That time of year there will be a ton of women looking for young 'crazy' guys like you. (assuming your single)

LMAO

Actually, you'd want to get to Billings or Cody by Sat. the 13th. We're trying to get everyone to Red Lodge, MT on the 14th and either start that day or early on the 15.

We have to shuttle a couple of vehicles so we'd most likely do that Sunday and head over to Cooke City.

Is anyone going south after?
We're planning to backpack Wind Rivers after Montanapalooza, but will have to set up a car shuttle. We'll leave my truck at the exit trail, but will need a ride to the start. Still haven't decided where to go. I ordered another book and will pick it up Saturday in Mammoth.

Or, is there a shuttle service in the area? The Sierras have one that will drive you to/from a trailhead. The other option is to use our thumbs.

Victim of SSC: Sudden Schedule Casualty
I am out for the Montana trip. I would love to go, it has been years since I have been to Montana, but between work and the changes in my personal schedule it does not appear I can make it. So I want to let you know in advance.
Thank you all for putting the trip together. Have a great and safe time...
