Aero's post mentioning Shakelton reminded me of the new IMAX movie on his voyage. Has anyone seen it? I'm planning on going soon, but coordinating baby sitters and nursing schedules is tricky? Any comments on the movie?

I wasn't aware that they made a movie! I'll definitely be up for that. I've read a couple of books about his voyage to the South Pole. Now that man and his crew were true studs!

You have to read about Shackelton's ill-fated Antarctic trek and the amazing willpower he and his crew exerted to survive. What stuck me most was the exceptional leadership he displayed in the face of almost hopeless circumstances.

The book is great. What really got me was trying to imagine going 18 months without seeing anything that was the color green. Can you imagine being one of the crew and spending two winters waiting on Shackelton to bring a rescue party? The trip of Shackelton in the open boat is very impressive, as well.

As I mentioned on another thread, they've released a movie (documentary) based on this book. I'm going to see it this weekend!

No matter how good the movie is, this is one instance in which you should read the book also.

My sister saw the movie and said it is great. I can't wait. It is coming to Sacramento tomorrow. I don't think it is in IMAX format though. I read the book with all the photos. I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes adventure stories. This book has it all.

There is book out that throws a different perspective on his "adventures" in the Antarctic. I've only heard about it second hand. When I find it I'll let you know what it's like.

movie review
Just came back from seeing the movie and it is a gotta see for all you guys who think you have ever struggled against any kind of odds. Actually, it is a gotta see for anyone. The photography is great, the story is great. The book gives the bigger picture, of course, but the movie still tells the amazing story.

I wish it had come out in the summer though. Seeing a cold damp movie on a cold damp day is a little much.
