I really enjoy BPer magazine. I look forward to it like some men do to their next issue of Playboy. I have not seen a magazine that is strickly dedicated to our sport.

Skully, I'd just as soon only use their website as well, but I can't see my monitor from the john.

I do enjoy the mag. I don't enjoy the gear and trip envy it fuels within me though.

BP mag is BS ! March is the only issue worth getting..... GEAR. I mean this is a mag that promotes Light-On-The Land shows pics of camps in wild flowered meadows, prints viewers responses to " the best places to....." and sends everyone there. I find that they show very little responsibly to what they say their mission is.

It's The Best... But I Wonder Sometimes
Got the April 2002 issue yesterday with Editor's Choices. Lots of good info this mag has.

My quandry is the 3-Season Glove comparison... Of all the 3-Season gloves I've seen on the market, the 3 I would have a hard time choosing between AREN'T EVEN MENTIONED. MH's "Tempest SL", and Marmot's "Driclime" or "Spring" gloves are the chit (imo) but weren't even reviewed. However, reading the article, it appears these gloves were reviewed a year ago. Makes ya wonder!?!?

I have all the gloves I need, but that tipi looks great for winter non-solo trips. Just can't justify it based on how often I get out. :(

To me?.. just IMHO.. reviews in Backpacker Magazine are BOUGHT.

Remember some of those reviews in the computer magazines also?.. like PC World?

So one-sided!

it's not worth having a subscription. i feel they fail to represent all areas of the country fairly when it comes to their destinations or feature articles.
i know the west is awesome, but it does me no good when i'm 3,000 miles away and looking for a cool new trail in the east.

They serve my (Eastern) regional needs
I have hiked in several Southeastern areas after being introduced to them by BP mag (Pinhoti Trail, Conecuh NF).

Destinations are finite, esp in these parts. Mentioning too many at once would use up the alotment...

I've been to places out west, too, thanks to BP mag. Also, they've featured destinations after I had been there (Tetons, White Cloud Peaks), and it was cool to read about where I had already been.

I bought my Eureka! Aurora based on their field trials report. Good tent.

I'm a long time subscriber of backpacker and I think it's pretty good magazine. I read the gear reviews, but I don't trust them that much. I like to try a product myself and if it works for me it's great, if it doesn't then it's useless. They over blow some gear claiming that it's so great, but in reality it's not.

How, Kemosaavee???
I've been throwing the idea around in my head with the idea of making my own lightweight shelter, but the more I think about that huge teepee I think that someday I'm going to try to make one of those.
Buddur

There might be plans somwhere on the net. I saw some plans for a tarp tent that's really lightweight.

i disagree, there are more backpacking trails east of the mississippi then west and the magazine fails to give them a fair shake. i know they do mention places east in their destinations, but it's rarely a feature. if the magazine does feature the east, it's probably in the white mtns or somewhere in the smokies. how many times is this mag going to cover the wonderland trail?? the east isn't covered enough considering how many backpackers live here and how many destinations there are.

I just read the December 2002 issue and I really enjoyed it.

I especially liked the article entitled

"Ultralight Wanker?"

And just where did they get that from?

I was showing the pictures of Mt. Whitney, Cathedral Rock, Agua Fria and the Texas path to my husband trying to gather interest for a trip. I liked the mention of possible dayhikes as well, since that is more doable as a family at this point.

Lynge -
Mebbe the "Ultralite Wanker" article is a follow-up to last month's "Ten Coldest Backcountry Swimming Holes" article.

Yeah, but I think some of their lightweight tips were wrong and, in fact, dangerous. Like lighten up by leaving your compass at home? Gimme a break. There were a couple of others that got to me as well. I'll have to look at the list again.

Not to get all conceited, but I think they've been reading this board for ideas.

They've censored the life-blood out of their own board so now they have to come here for fresh ideas!

Hey we should start a letter writing campaign to protest their use of the work "wanker."

(It is funny... you can't post "Mt. Hancock" or "Skyscraper" on their site, but the put "ultralightwanker" in their magazine.)

I agree with rosiemonster, their tips for going ultralight were way off. Not that I'm an expert on the subject of going ultralight, but leaving a compass at home was ill-advised. For the record, I'm currently a subscriber, but I have no plans on renewing.

Here's a good tip - use that magazine's pages for TP on your next trip.

The last several issues of BP Mag seem to have been an improvement over some of the previous. As mentioned here before, although BP Mag stays current with articles on the latest gadget, they usually run about a year behind the latest trends and techniques. The more I backpack the more I realize this magazine is more geared toward novice bpers.
