Good gear, all! Sass, I bet birch will dig the Optimus. It's bombproof. I used mine for three consecutive weeks in the High Sierra last summer with no problems at all. Everyone among the older set who saw it made a point of telling me, "I used to use one of those a long time ago."

Kickin' stove! Mine's about 40 years old and going strong!

Gear Guide 10x32 Snowshoes (thanks for the tip Roseymonster)

Silk Black Balaclava

22oz MSR Fuel Bottle

The last two were pick-ups to get the $10 off for buying $100 worth of stuff.

Oh, and............. Kamik Courage Boots - waterproof, and insulated - new winter hiking boots.

I discovered a gear store in my area that I'd never heard of before..... it kicks major a$$. When I tried the courages on, they felt heavenly, and only $85.

Back from the U.P. ...
... but while I was there for a bit over a week, I managed to make the rounds of gear shops. The great deal I found was on giant duffle bags at Gander Mountain -- 40"X 18" in black or camo, under the "North Peak" logo, with shoulder strap, carry handles that velcro together, haul handles at each end, compression straps over a two-way top zipper, a side slash zipper pocket, made of Cordura-like heavy nylon. Had been marked down to $19.99, which wasn't bad...but when I dropped in on Tuesday they were marked down to $9.99 each. Absolutely dirt cheap for a pretty rugged duffle.

May not be Mountain Hardware quality, but they will be great cargo bags for the back of my truck, or for storing/hauling bulky items. I'm wishing I had grabbed more than 2 from the bin.

I scored for Reino, too, when we stopped to see an old friend who has a dancewear shop, and I spotted some Danskin aerobics tanks made of Supplex and Lycra for 75% off -- $8.25 each. Hot, hot, hot!

had a visit from the big brown truck today - got a rino 120 GPS/FRS. oh boy oh boy new toy for the weekend - too bad I'm not actually going anywhere - sigh - but I'll be all set for the upcoming Sipsey hike (BSEG) - moral is that if you are feeling down buy something and you won't feel so down when it comes in.

HOI
That's not a bad price.
The rino is one of those things I want but can't justify the price seeing as I alreally own a lite GPS and lite FS radio. The combo would save me a few oz but cost a lot.
Is there a Sipsey trip planned or is this a private trip?
I'm full up till Feb 15-17.
That would be a good 3 day weekend for me (off monday).

actually I was mostly joking about the Sipsey trip - I want one sometime early spring or late winter just to do some trail maintenance - mainly blowdown removal especially between Bee Branch and 204 on 209 and up at the top of 204 is what I was thinking of - possibly come in on 202 if the river is not too high.

HOI - I'm NOT joking about a Sipsey trip.
A trail maintain trip sounds great.
I understand you are DA MAN!!! on a crosscut saw. Those things are killers. The Sipsey's about 6 hours away from me so it's fairly close (Easy drive).

Maple - Hope that mini stove works for you. It's real good for boiling a couple cups of water. Works great for "pour hot water in bag" meals.

cold wet feet. help!
Last February when I went snowcamping I bought a pair of Stormsocks by Seirus from REI. They have a licra outer layer and I wore my wool socks over those with cheap snow boots.

Although the package says they are breathable and keep your feet warm and dry, they didn't work for me. Any suggestions on other brands that worked for you?

Crocodiles® & Big Crocs

On television, in magazines, and in the mountains all over the world, Crocodiles have become the most visible of all gaiters. Is it their bombproof construction? Their trim fit? Their easy adjustability? Well, it's probably all of the above. In any case we're glad that this ground-breaking design has been so successful. Crocodiles were the first fitted gaiters whose size could be adjusted to fit tightly on boots of different sizes. Changing the amount of overlap of the wide Velcro front strips changes the Croc's circumference, allowing a single pair to fit several different boot styles. The foot section is armored with 1000 denier Cordura and lined with the packcloth. The waterproof coatings on the two layers face one another so they'll never be worn away. Taslan Gore-Tex fabric covers the leg section and combined with a 3/4 in. wide webbing and cam buckle top closure, keeps out the elements.

Got them for $55 thats with shipping!

I've been using the Crocs in the winter for years. They are nice. The velcro strip makes a nice seal around the boot and well made. No blow outs in many years of use. Enjoy them.

I've been checking STP every day for my boots to go on sale.

I paid $225/pr the first time I got them (years ago). The price stayed at $119 for a long time, then after xmas down to $95. I held out, and on Monday the price dropped to $65.I just ordered 2 pair of Raichle Mtn Trekkers. My confirmation said I saved $320! A big WHOO HOOOO!

did that take care of it?

Anyway, I got my new Osprey Solo today! It's a light 500ci pocket that clips to any Osprey pack for some extra space if you need it. Plus, it comes with its own shoulder straps so it can be used as a daypack as well. The best part? The price! Only $20 from Moosejaw. I also got a Thermarest pillow for $14. It's a lot more comfortable than my Slumberjack pillow, which I have to double over to make work. All in all, a great delivery today from the Big Brown Truck!
