New snowshoes! woohooo!

“Not to be confused with the recent Whohoo thread, which I thought was about screech owls.

My after Christmas present arrived today, Atlas 1033 snowshoes. These babies are cool and very easy to get in and out of. We just got 6" of snow and I took a test drive on them on a flat trail behind my house. I felt comfortable with them right away and can't wait to go packin with them.

I used to dread winter but it's more than welcome now.”

Hey, congrats! I got my first pair last winter. Unfortunately, PA doesn't often have very good snowshoeing conditions, except for after heavier accumulations in the higher elevations, or if you head out to the northcentral part of the state.

However, I'm hoping to get up to the Catskills for at least one weekend basecamp/dayhiking trip sometime this winter, where the snowpack is usually deeper and less fickle than here in PA. Interested? - lemme know. Rich B may also come -- right Rich?”

“Pennsy, it's a blast to hike in winter snow, even off trail. More thigh conditioning than with anything Suzanne Sommers sells! I gave my daughter some Atlas shoes for X-mas, and gave my wife some Iverson woodframe/neoprene-webbing shoes that merge modern materials with classic design. Now I just have to get them out on the trails with me. Not enough snow in the Wisconsin northwoods, but the Superior shore has gotten lake effect off and on, so each location along the north side of the U.P. varies.”

“Last year was my second year of having snowshoes and I had a blast with them. A few more inches around here and I may be able to bust them out. COME ON SNOW!!!

I got 1022's for tooling around on during dayhikes. Only backpacked with them once. However, if I thought I'd be doing lots of backpacking with them, I'd've gotten 1033s instead.”

BTW if there is any interest it looks like by bi-annual hiking buds are getting together for a 40-45 mile AT trip in Jersey. It looks like it going to be around the weekend of 3/8 Friday through Monday or Something like that. I will post more later when things come together a little better.”

Count me in for a Catskills weekend MS. I've never been there but looking forward to getting up there.

Buddur, thanks for that trip report. I wasn't around here back then so I never saw it. Shoot, as early as this past August, I had never slept in a sleeping bag and hated winter. Now I'm talking about packin in the mountains with snowshoes. What have you people done to me!?!”

“I know I'm old fashioned, but are these tiny shoes any good? they always look too small for me, I weigh 210, and mostly x-ski, but use homemade wood/polypropeline shoes for rough terrain and steep slopes. My shoes are about twice the area of these newer aluminum and synthetic shoes I see, and I'm afraid I'd end up postholing if I tried them. I'm really not interested in trading mine in, but I am curious.”

The best way is to check the manufacturers charts to see which ones fit your needs...then rent some to try them out.

I wanted a pair of 1033's 2 years ago..but it was the end of the season (ie. on special) and the store didn't have all the sizes. I ended up with a pair of Tubbs...no complaints.”

“but my daddy got some the nother days and they was perty good I gess. They are good for what we call "makin trale" but that is about all cuz they are SLOW!

After we walk on the new trale and go back the nother way I can walk in front and have fun.”

Just heard from Mike since I tipped him off about your buy. We were supposed to head to Yosemite this weekend, but the weather man faked us out. He road tripped it.

Wanna go in January? We're thinking three days. Glacier Point to Taft Point and then cross country out. We're waiting for substantial snow build up.

Just remember to make sure the snow baskets are securely attached to your poles, or you'll spend a lot of time digging for them!

“Because Santa doesn't come by my house, I decided I order my xmas present and have the UPS man deliver it. The Atlas Electra 1025 Snowshoes are on the way. The snowshoes I've been useing are okay, but heavier, bigger 8x28, and they're recreational models.

Now I'm working on planning a trip to the Sierras to use them in January. I think I'm going to go to the Rock Creek Area north of Bishop for a couple days to take the shoes for a spin.”

“I love my Atlas snowshoes and can't wait to get out on them. Could have used them on the Valentine Lake dayhike thanksgiving weekend. We're taking them to Mammoth during the holidays and will probably do some snowshoeing. I don't know if I can snowboard 12 days in a row.”

“All the sporting goods stores toe and hand warmers - especially this time of year. I think there $1.59 at my local Big 5 and about the same at Sportmart.

Yeah - when it comes to new gear I have no willpower. I now have at least two of almost everything, so if anyone wants to go backpacking and needs to borrow gear I probably have it to lend out.”
