performance enhancement? ;oP
ok, so who's got "performance" snowshoes? ...and what's the big diff?

I see the V-shape and it says that this allows for more maneuverability, but how does that affect balance? Are these shoes versatile enough for carrying a pack or best just for speedy trail racers?

I have Tubbs Adventure series and they work very well for me. I am looking for a pair for my s.o.
Wondering if I should just stay with Tubbs or go with Redfeather performance - they are on a good sale and they look good to me.
(ratchet bindings are EVILLLL, so web binding was a must in my selection criteria)

Any thoughts?

Thanks! :o)

You Saw 'Em Woman
Atlas 10 Series (1022s, 1o33s, 1044s), are snowshoes and crampons together. Of course, I'm biased because I have a pair.

I really liked yours, Buddur, but they are pricier. Yours aren't performance, are they?

I have some Redfeathers with pointy backs and I don't think there's balance difference. Tubbs & Atlas are both more tapered in the middle where your foot is and I don't there's significant difference in not tripping over your own feet either.

I got the Redfeathers cause I fell in love with the bindings on some I rented. They had soft lace-ups that were like putting on a tennis shoe, very secure & comfortable. When I got mine they had "upgraded" to very stiff plastic that you attempt to lace over your boot. But I've never walked out of them, they're secure enough. I've wished I had ratchet bindings when my laces are all iced up after a walk.

I think I am the only Texas resident who owns his own snowshoes, so take this for what it's worth. I'd say spend your money on some other new gear.

Sheesh, aimee. Always complaining about "performance" just because of that ONE time. I was...um...TIRED! :Ž

Here's an article from everybody's favorite (hated) magazine comparing several models of snowshoes.

bite your tongue, Chief! =:0
thanks, TJ. I had a problem with ratchet bindings last year - I had rented some shoes and the binding kept icing up and slipping, making them virtually unusable.

I liked the Redfeather bindings, but I only have firsthand experience with Tubbs (and those crappy rentals).

ANYway. back to the subject at hand!

Amy G --

I think the real question is why does BOB need his own snowshoes? And how are you going to attach him to them . . .strap him on??

Inquirying minds want to know.

and on a serious note
PS: I think that the performance oriented snowshoes are for the spandex and lycra set who want to go racing around the local park or forest trail on largely packed trails, while carrying color co-ordinated fanny hydration packs and travel at a jogging pace (the same ones who would have been skate skiing on their cross country skis after the last winter Olymmpics).

TO carry pack weight, its all about floatation, and floatation is all about surface area.

Weight of BOB plus weight of BOB's batteries and pack plus depth of anticipated snow = size of shoe.

Its an "intended use" thing.

I think BOB would be frustrated in 3 feet of snow with a pack on in "performance" shoes.

I have Atlas, I forget which model. Big ones for deep interior alaska powder, 210# person+pack.

I wouldn't get performance shoes unless I was going to run/race on snow.

PS-does everybody with Atlas know about the upgrade program? I hear the binding have been vastly improved since I got mine. I think it was Snownymph who had her's upgraded with great service.

The Redfeather Performance line is NOT for backpacking, they are for walking or running. I think lee pretty much has it right.

Their backpacking models used to have that shape. I had a pair. They worked OK for packed trails but I was lost in powder. I called them up and complained that they didn't perform as advertised and they sold me a pair of their backcountry series which has a rounded tail at wholesale - they work great! They have ratchet bindings which perform perfectly for me with gators on. I wouldn't want to wear them with a boot that didn't have a stiff upper because the strap across the toe would be uncomfortable and could pinch your circulation causing cold toes.

(embrassed) I guess I don't know what a BOB is, so I don't get it. Do I really want to, or would I rather be blissfully ignorant.

Thanks for all of the feedback, everyone.

Bob doesn't care much for snowshoeing, so he'll be staying home. Hence, the decision to get snowshoes for the non-battery operated version. ;o)
