Okay, it's winter. And there are very definite benefits to having moist lips :)

So, I was talking to my sister and she says that frequent use of chapstick causes your lips to stop producing natural lubricants.

Okay, so before I become a crack whore of sorts to the cosmetics industry, is this true and what alternatives do I have?

I just let them dry up! Even with chap stick it still causes them to dry at night when sleeping sometimes.

I know that if you try not to lick them or get them wet they wont dry up.

Wipe w/ your sleeve after drinking water IT works!

All I know is that it stopped a crack starting in my chapped bottom lip earlier this winter, and it was a big help in the extremely dry conditions in the N.D. Badlands last May. I use both Carmex and Blistex herbal/aloe sticks when the conditions call for it, but not daily certainly.

Works for me.

If there are already cracks, I use the lip balm. If I'm going to be out in the extreme sun/cold/wind, I use the lip balm with sunscreen. It protects against extreme conditions. Indoors and in mild conditions if my lips get dry, I drink more water.

i read/heard somewhere that once you start using chapsticks that your basically doomed to be addicted to them. I know this is the case with me. I never used it as a kid, and even through most of high school...but since then..it's everyday as much as possible *starts licking lips and looking for a tube*...heh..i think i'm out..i may have to break into my backpacking first aid kit and get that tube!!

What works for me
Banana Boat lip balm with Aloe is good stuff. Trader Joes also has some good stuff (3 pk/yellow & red container).

I used Clinique lipstick (light color) with spf for 30 days on the JMT and my lips never chapped.

My grandfather would always say.."You know what the best thing for chapped lips is?" And his answer would be.......... "chicken sh!t"..after our looks of bewilderment..he'd say.."Well..i betcha wouldn't lick your lips anymore"

I like Carmex in the little tub. I also put it around my nostrils and even on my cheecks if they start chapping in winter on hikes. I don't know if I'm doomed but I do know I'm absolutely miserable without something.

Not sure I'd put it on my bag like baume 66 does though. Might be TOO tingly. LOL!

i loooove lip balm! in fact, right now i have on 3 different kinds at once, to reap the benefits of each! Burt's Bees for sun and wind, because it stays on for a long time; but that's a little too hard-core, so over that i use this kind that Tarpie's mom gave me that tastes like coconut; and then over that i use some pink sparkly Lipsmackers, for color! wooohoo! of course, if i had just the regular Burt's Bees, i'd only use that, but that would be too easy, now wouldn't it. i'm an addict, and proud of it!

I use Bert's Lyra. Regular (I wish they'd put some SPF in the sun/wind formula). Itz da bomb! I've also used the Rite Aid brand SPF 30 stuff and it's pretty good too.

Stuff like Carmex and Blistex has camphor (sp?), that menthol taste/feel, in it and your lips get addicted to it.

I'm all natural, baby!

Man Saved by Lip Balm
Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Call it the case of the lucky ChapStick.

Steven Jacobs, a physician's assistant in Brooklyn, N.Y., dropped his tube of lip balm at work last Wednesday — and bent over to pick it up just as a bullet flew through his office window, reports the New York Post.

Police and witnesses said Jacobs, 35, was working at the Ditmas Park Rehab/Care Center just before 3 p.m. when two men started arguing on the street outside.

One guy pulled out a BB gun — which prompted the other to yank out a real handgun and get off several shots.

One bullet hit the first man in the jaw. Another ricocheted and went right into Jacobs' office window just as he reached for the ChapStick.

"I thought there was car backfiring in the parking lot," said Jacobs, a former Israeli policeman. "The second shot told me I needed to stay down."

Jacobs was hit above the eye by flying glass, but the cut was not serious, and he said his injuries could have been much worse.

"There's a hole in the window over there, and seconds before, I was standing up there," he said. "I was very fortunate. God was with me, no question. If God wanted me dead, I would be dead."

The man shot outside went to the hospital, while the shooter got away.

After Jacobs' close call made the newspapers, he got a call from Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, makers of ChapStick.

"Wyeth wants to make sure that he has ChapStick available forever," spokeswoman Heather Scherman told the Post.

Jacobs was soon to receive a case of 100 ChapSticks, the beginning of a free lifetime supply.

"I'm very happy," said Jacobs. "I use it all the time."

I bet I know what he's going to use as a "stocking stuffer" from now on. I say "stocking stuffer" figuratively since he's probably Jewish, based on his previous residence. I can hear it now:

"Aww, man, another tube of Chap Stick from Uncle Jacobs."

"Now Johnny, its very useful, you should thank your Uncle Jacobs."

"But Mom, I already have 10 tubes of this stuff left over from last year."
