Hmmm...notice we are all from PA?

And you girlys better be carful when you pee and dont get yer cooter in the snew - It is CODE! But it feels perty good tho I gess.

Tanks fer the advise, Belle!
oh yeah...cooter in the snow is bad. I hate it when that happens!

Pennsy is coming?!! GREAT!!

Adventurist - I always bring a tent as back-up. I would hate to take chances and end up with you boys laboring to build me a snow castle. ;o)

That lean-to shall be ours! mooohahahaaa

We have a meeting point (basecamp) - we could all just plan to meet there. That worked well last year.

Unless by some small miracle, we can all coordinate an arrival time? I am flexible.

If you do like a boy

We're taking Dare's truck, since my car will not hold both of our packs plus the gear sled, snowshoes, etc.

Also, I would hate to get stuck, if it snows. Plus, I just love to drive that thing!

Thanks for the tips Belle - I don't know what we would do without you. ;-)

I'll be driving a Dakota 4x4. Plenty of room for gear and another person if another solo wants to make the trip?

I'll need some directions to the basecamp. I'm heading to EMS in a few mintues and will try to pick up a map of that region. All I have is the high peaks maps.

The lean-to sounds great but I'd like to setup my tent if possible. I paid a fortune for that dang Bibler and I want to get my money's worth. ;-)

The time is up to you guys. I'm very flexible. I'm off work Friday at 3:30 and don't report back til Tues 7am.

Should get up there in 5-6 hours.

Look at Bakers Mills on a NY map.
Bakers Mills is just south of North Creek on route 8.

You will take Route 8 to get to the trailhead.

Pennsy, Let me know if you find a map at EMS.

Lets see...take Rt. 28 to Wevertown and turn West on Rt. 8.

Go about 10 miles on Rt. 8, there should be a sign for Shanty Brook and Siamese Ponds.

wow, Pennsy has a Bibler!!! ooooh ahhhhh

I have the ADK guidebook with map, btw. I think it runs about 18 bucks at your local outfitter. :o)

Trailhead is off RT 8, as Adventurist said. The trail is the East branch Sacandaga.

Feen, your tent is pretty nice also - what kind was it? SD?

I have a crappy Eureka - not that it is really bad for 3-season, but we are gonna freeze if there is a slight blow of wind. Here's hoping for snagging the leanto space.
(I've got a tarp to cover the front too)

Great for winter...but its pretty heavy for 3 season use.

I'll be using a new sleeping bag that I got this past summer. Marmot Never Summer 0 degree down bag.

hey Pennsy - which EMS do you visit? Dare and I were just at the one at Lehigh Valley mall...it is so conveniently close to Nestors and Army Navy! :o)

Feen, make sure you bring lotsa warm footwear. Got down booties? I highly recommend 'em (just got Dare a pair!)

Last year I had my Koflach Doubles with me. I have modular muk's from OR and I take my liners and wear them around camp. This year I might bring my La Sportiva leathers because they are a little lighter and easier on the ankle. I used them Saturday for a hike up to Sunfish Pond and I was fine.

You wouldn't be drooling if you saw my credit card bills lately. Geez, I went bonkers this year!

Amy - I go to the EMS in Allentown and also the one in Somerville, NJ. I work in NJ and hit that store when I am in that area.

Allentown only had the 'Guide to Adirondack Trails 7 - Southern Region' but I think the trail is in the Central Region book. I'm sure I can find the trailhead from your directions but if I get to Somerville this week, I'll see if they have that book.

Adventurist - where the heck do you work in Alpha that is open til 11:30pm?? Alpha closes at 7.

OK..I called and reserved a set of snowshoes for my wife from Beaver Brook Outfitters. They are located in an old church in Wevertown at the intersection of Rt. 8 and Rt. 28. Very Convenient! The phone # there is (888)-454-8433. Thanks a bunch Sparky!

yeeeeeehaw!
I just got off the phone with the ranger in that area...
says they have a good foot of base and two more inches of fluffy white just fell! Whoohoo!!

He also said that the leanto is in excellent condition. The area is not very well travelled in Winter, so having the place to ourselves should be considered likely. Of course, being a holiday (MLK b-day)weekend, we may have some company. Who knows...

Its looking like a great trip, guys! :o)

No Shoes Is Snow Shoes

I was planning to go naked up to Monongehela NF Jan 18-21.

Maybe snow shoe trippin' in the Adirondacks with a gang would be a viable alternative.

Pennsy-
You still have a place in your truck?

I have a connection in Scotch Plains, NJ.
Maybe I could meet one of you jokers somewhere on Friday or on Saturday morning.

Amy - I've only been doing this since this past September but I wouldn't doubt you bumped into me. I was the one totally confoosed.

That's great news about the conditions. Do you know around what time you'll be headin up? I might leave Saturday as early as 4-5am. I've never been to that area so I might just drive around and explore a bit if I get there long before you guys.

Tom - I still have room if you want to work something out.

Pennsy has a date!!! >;D

Tom - would be great to have you join us. The weather is looking good, temperature wise (so far, anyway.)

Pennsy - Dare and I may head up Friday, if he has off work. We won't know until Thursday whether he is free or not (that Uncle Sam is fickle!) If so, we plan on wandering a bit in the catskills Friday and then shacking up there. We'll hit the road first thing Saturday, planning to be on the trail by late morning/early afternoon - latest.

We can all meet up at basecamp whenever. Last year, most of us hiked in after dark...
I almost didn't find Buddur! =:0

(don't worry, the ranger said it is impossible to miss the leanto on this trail.)

What do you think of this?

Hey! I was looking at the map I have of the area and it looks like a cool hike for Sunday would be to head over to Siamese Ponds.....head up between Humphrey and Puffer Mtns.....grab the trail on the other side and hit Round Pond, Kings Flow and Puffer Pond and then swing back to camp?

It definitely depends on density of the forest and how frozen bodies of water are.

What were you thinking Amy?

I know I would love to check out Siamese Ponds and Puffer Pond.

The one side of Puffer Mtn is supposed to have a steep face on it...saw it mentioned on a climbing site.

Sounds great Amy.... except for the date part...grrrrrr! haha.

If Tom can make it, I'll try to work out a time and place to pick him up early Saturday. Somewhere off 287 perhaps. Otherwise, I'll just wing it and get up there as early as possible. I got the right map today so I should be fine. (famous last words!)

BTW, thanks for reminding me about the Army & Navy. I forgot all about it and stopped there tonight. They got lots and lots of boots so I went a shoppin.

I'm game for anything...let's explore it all!!
One thing though: Ranger cautioned me that freezing conditions aren't up to par with the norm up there. He said to be extra careful on the ponds. We'll see how it looks.

I wouldn't mind climbing a bit, getting in some good views, etc. Let's see how we all feel.

Let's track some moose!! >:D

The weather...so far, so good.

Saturday
Partly cloudy. A chance of snow showers. Highs in the upper 20s.

Sunday
Partly cloudy with a chance of snow showers. Lows near 10 above and highs 25 to 30.

Monday
Partly cloudy. Lows in the mid teens and highs 30 to 35.

Monday is lookin' like a beaut, anyway. Sure beats the subzero temps we got last time I organized a Winter hike.
