AmyG, et al,

Trip sounds excellent. I'd love to join you all, but I'm going to have to pass on this one. Bad timing for me. I'm hoping to get up to the Daks another time this winter. Also expecting to do something in the Cats again soon.

Be careful about crossing ponds. My brother fell through once up there - and fortunately lived to tell about it.

Enjoy.

Heya M! Sorry ya can't make it this time. Wow, skeery about your brother. Glad he's around to tell the story!

OK, so I have everyone's phone number (and vice versa) except for TommyT. Hopefully, you can make the trip and coordinate with Pennsy.

:o)

How much snow is "good"?

I've got Pennsy Dude's # and he will be passing right by my sister's in NJ.......I'll just stick out my thimb~@%^P

Are ski poles a good idea?

No, not Polskies.....Granny, you CAN'T go!!!

Oh Yeah!
Just looked at your weather report.

That is just perfect weather!

Cold enough to keep things dry!

Many are cold
But few are frozen

There's about a foot and a half of base snow and they expect the final count from this last dusting to be about 3 inches.

Yes, bring poles, if ya got 'em. They are a must for snowshoeing with a pack on, IMO.

There was a good foot or so
when I was up there at New Years. I've seen cloudiness in that area on many a satellite foto since.

Wish I were joining you'ns!

Woo Hoo Amy, it's looking good!!
Anybody bringing crampons?

I picked out a good meet place for TomT. I hope he can make it. If he brings Granny Polsky, she'll have to ride in the back with the gear. ;-)

Gojo - I wish you could make it too. It'd be a blast.

I have crampons but I'm not bringing them.

Probably not bring my ice ax either.

Dutch Oven? Food?
I was wondering what everybody would like to do about food? I was thinking, (this is where my wife says "oh great" or something like that), does anyone have a Dutch Oven? If we have a fire this would be a great way to cook a large meal for everybody. We could cook something hearty too! Is anyone a vegetarian?

Food? Amy said YOU were in charge of that. ;-)
I'm bringing some chili and ziti that I made and dehydrated, energy bars, gorp, ramon noodles with dried chicken chunks to liven it up, pop tarts, hot chocolate, coffee packets, and anything else I can think of between now and Sat morning.

OR.... we could strap a patio grill and a few cases of beer to Amy's sled, eat steaks and party all weekend in the camp?

I don't know about you fools, but Dare and I are bringing champagne and cavier. ;p

Actually, it is fun in Winter, because you can bring fresh food (steak, etc.)
I think I have pre-grilled chicken and pasta with fresh veggies on the menu for Sat night. Yumbilicious!

BTW Feen...you bringing a tarp? Mine may not be big enough to cover the entire front of the lean-to. We probably need two. Of course, we may end up in tents, who knows...

I have a small tarp that usually goes underneath my tent...
I found these cool quick release tarp clips at Home Depot that would be great for backpacking...maybe I'll stop and grab some.

I was thinking about bringing fresh ingredients for a soup or stew. All depends on if a can stir up a pot.

You know what is good for cooking in the winter?

Frozen foods...you can get those frozen instant meals and fresh meat and cook it up when you get to camp.

Fools you say, eh? I know some fools who will HELP you consume the champagne and caviar. ;-)

Hey, good news! Tom T is a go and he's going to meet me here Sat around 6am.

Adventurist, because the leantos get so much use, you might not find any firewood for at least a quarter mile up or down the trail.

Amy, I expect a nice report once youans get back.

Have fun kids.

Thanks for the word M. Since it looks like I will have the gear sled together...I might pull in a couples pieces of wood.

yeah, we are planning on bringing our own wood in too. Ranger says there's a great fireplace at the shelter, but as M reminded us, wood is scarce.

A nice report? Sorry M, you'll have to settle for my usual long-winded missive.

Dare and I are leaving first thing tomorrow AM on a Campmor excursion. The conditions are expected to be dangerous, so wish us luck in escaping unscathed.

After that, we are heading to the Cats for a short dayhike (test run of Dare's new shoes) and B&Bing there (rough, eh?)

We expect to see the trailhead at Siamese Sat AM...11ish.
