How do you stay warm at night?
Question for couples: do you zip together or stay separate on those cold winter backpacking nights? Which do you think is warmer?

Also, since I learned the hard way from last year's blunder, I now have a z-rest AND my thermarest I'l be taking next weekend. What is best:
Z-rest on bottom and then thermarest?
or
thermarest on bottom and then z-rest?

Any other good insulating sleeping pads? Sleeping on snow, you don't really need the padding, per se, just insulation and lots of it.

...and those z-rests are friggin expensive, btw!!! grublegrumblegrumble. Buddur, you had better be right!

A $7 K-mart closed cell pad will work as well as a Z-rest (you hit on why already).
I lay my bivy on the closed cell full length pad. My 3/4 thermorest goes in the bivy, on top of the other. The clothes I will put on in the AM are under my legs for more insulation and to make it less of a shock to get dressed in the morning.

Sounds like you've made a new friend, eh?

Just got a pair of mating bags and yer dern tootin' I'll be snuggling! I can always count on Birch's body temp to be at least twenty degrees higher than mine. I'd be a fool not to take advantage of a warm toasty man. ;o)

Hot Fun
I’ve been experimenting with this. Separate is warmer but not as much fun. Its because when you zip together you have a larger volume of air to heat up and it is harder to keep air from leaking in at the opening. Together is more fun because … never mind, you already know.

I’d put the closed cell pad on top of the thermarest. I just use to closed cells in winter and leave the therma at home.

Ever try two people in one bag?

I wear longjohns and wool socks and a stocking cap when I sleep. My wife does not winter camp so I sleep alone:( I have thought about trying a muslin mummy bag liner, anyone know about those?

I would never sleep in anything but a Jewish mummy bag liner. Oy vey!

Sass, you said it! :o)

Thanks for the feedback. I saw the more economic foam pads too, but they are pretty bulky. I liked the compactedness of the z-rest.

So the thermarest should go on top?

Feathered friends make a double sleeping bag. Two can sleep in it or it zips together so that one person can use it. It is down which I don't like. And the price on the thing is about 400. But if you plan on just useing that one for both of you it is not that bad a deal.

Zip those puppies together! As long as you're about 10-15 deg. above what your bag is rated you should be fine. Anyway, the colder it gets the closer you sleep ;). Z-rest on the bottom, thermarest on top (just think box spring and mattress).

dude, with only one pad you lose a lot of heat to the ground...with subzero temps up there at night, I would rather be warm!

Last year I used only one pad and after three nights camping, you could see a depression under my tent, where my bodyheat had melted through the snow. No thank you!

I've slept in -10 with only foam pad underneath and double-bagged. Yes, left a depression in the snow an ice, but kept warm and dry--except for the frost on top of the bag.

I try not to be a spreader of gossip... but: I think this daring love story is about the kewlest thing to happen to a TT'er (Dare wasn't a TT'er when it happened). Imagine a rare gem of a girl falls in love with a guy who has been her best friend for half her life. If he is even half what he seems to be from listening to Amy, he actually deserves.

Anyway: Welcome Dare and congratulations! I hope to hike a while with you one day. Have a great time in the Daks with yer DreAmy girl.

I usually put down a space blanket then a ridge rest or a thermarest (not both). The space blanket weighs nothing and is great at reflecting heat back at you. Be sure to put it under the pad or you'll get some condensation from perspiration under your bag.

Hey Ped - that's a great story. Thanks for keeping us newish people updated, even if Amy denies all. At least I took a ptooey as a denial. ;-)

Pennsy: "Ptooey" weren't no denial. It wuzz her saying that Dare and I were gettin too sentimental.

Based on hiking with Amy and hearing about Dare over the past year or so, I'm sure you'll have a great time hiking with both of them.

You missed your calling in life Big Foot. haha Im not that good looking, she just thinks my truck is sexy. "Sigh" I can still remember when I gave her the ring. She looked at it, smiled, and then took my keys and said "is the gas tank full?" I took that as a yes. Just kidding honey.

AmyG: You hike the 'Dacks as I do and I'm surprised you've been cold this winter. I recently bought an 'Orbit' inflatable pad from MEC - the Canadian REI in Ottawa (www.mec.ca) it's thicker and wider than other Thermarests (although made by them) - for Canadians I guess. It's a bugger to pack, in fact it's huge, but probably not as bad as two mattresses. I roll mine and sling it under my pack, held by the flap straps that run from under my bag. Check it out.

Kewl, amyg......KEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWLLLLLL!! (I mean the situation, not that I hope you'll freeze in them thar zipped-together bags)

Lesseee. Yeah, zipped-together bags do make for a colder space. (Maybe zip...then unzip...hehehee). I tried the **one bag** deal with a big bag. Felt too confining. I roll around waaaaaaay too much...WHEN SLEEPING!! A third bag would be nice to throw over the top, but that's not gonna happen backpacking. (I was car camping)

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.....go warm up now, you two!! ;-)
