Yahoooo!!! A three day weekend coming up. I just don't know what to do. Long dayhikes, or maybe a real overniter on Ophir Creek trail. Deciding is the hard part.
What are you all going to do?

You asked !
What are you all going to do? Well, what's a weekend? Wait a minute, I know. That's when most people buy their groceries. So I'll be bagging, bagging, bagging, ... And two consecutive days off, I'll never see it. Well, hold it, I can put in a request two weeks in advance for time off, unpaid of course. But then my schedule goes all to h.ll and my hours drop way down for weeks.

So I continue, putting up with all types of people and their diversified attitudes. and some indifferent and inefficient managers and management aspirants. And I plug away with fellow associates, many of whom do as little as possible, and a lot of know-it-alls who do their jobs wrong. But what else can I expect when I'm at the bottom of the wage scale.

So what do I do? I do my best! I pick up the scraps, handle the trash, the recycles, the spills, retrieve those carts, and I greet each customer cheerfully, as though they are the first customer of the day and this is my store, like I am the owner. I want their experience to be enjoyable and I want them to return. I do this because I have pride in doing my best. And, if it were not for the customers, I would not have this job. So I swallow my ego and go on and on, treating each customer as though I've been anxiously waiting for their arrival.

OK, you asked what I was going to do this three day weekend. I'll be doing the same as every weekend, working my fanny off, but doing my best as I look forward to better days.

Have a great weekend, and please drive safely, I would like to see you again.

nowslimmer, dude do you work for Safeway? I worked there for 10 years until I finally got pissed at my manager and found this cool job. It sounds to me like you work for the same kind of @sshole I used to work for. If this is the case, I know your pain. Take it easy this weekend man.

I can't take it easy. I need to work hard. I still want to be a success in this life.

No, I work at Publix.

I would retire, but then I would have to give up the illusion of being wanted and needed.

Sorry for venting, but the question was asked.

Got 'cha. I prefer cart duty, because then I can do just that. Or, sometimes I work as custodian.

But, otherwise, I sometimes make up my own games. At one store I used to take out the groceries for a greater percentage of the customers in the express lines than the others did with the full cart orders. (The book says that every customer deserves service. It does not specify the size of the order.) I experimented with many different approaches, but the book way still works best. Don't ask, just start out with the groceries. If I have to, I just explain that they deserve "service," which is what the store claims to be built on.

BTW, some of the managers are good. I did use the word "some" in the first post.

(Today was my weekend.) And now I have to go to practice.

It's not a long weekend uo here in Kyanada, but we just got a lot of snow and I just might drive to
Ottawa and buy a pair of Fritschi Diamir Titanal 2 bindings, put them on my skis and try them out on a colleague/buddy's place on Sunday. Then it's back to the 'Dacks every chance I get.

My next 3 day weekend is MEMORIAL DAY! Must be nice ya bunch of slackers (excluding nowslimmer)!

Of course my fiance has MLK day off, President's Day off, not to mention a 3 week track break in Feb. (year round school, 5 tracks, 1 one on vaca, 4 in school).

Reptiles - Not that nice... This is the first year we have MLK Day off. It sucks, cause now we don't get the day after Thanksgiving off.

But, we're supposed to follow the NYSE schedule, so I guess it makes sense.

tarabull - You're right, it sucks! The same thing happened to me years ago, while working on defense stuff. But, for our birthday we had a floating holiday. So we could use it for the day after Thanksgiving. This then meant that we all were celebrating our birthday on MLK Day. Big deal.

They say, "No pain, no gain!" Well, this was a pain with no gain!"

It sure would be nice if we got a day off for the president's birthday, like they do for the Queen of England. Of course, then we would have a lot of people voting for a candidate born on July 3 or December 26, just for the long weekends.
