Good entry level pack 4:18:45 PM 1/16/02 “my sis got the kelty Yukon pack at REI for $75” 4:20:38 PM 1/16/02 “JESUS CHRIST!!!! 7 pounds 9 ozs for a 4900 ci pack! I don't think so.” 8:16:35 PM 1/16/02 “That's about 1/3 of my loaded pack weight!” 8:36:53 PM 1/16/02 “So Dude...you like this pack? ;-) I got my son a pack for Christmas, $99 from Campmor, I think it was 6lbs, 5500 ci.” 10:35:59 PM 1/16/02 10:55:01 PM 1/16/02 Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... “I never knew Jesus used a backpack.” 11:00:14 PM 1/16/02 “Keep in mind that the lightest pack is not always the best pack, it's just the lightest pack. Some packs have better mechanical advantage than others and sometimes more durable components will weight more. Heavier, but stronger zippers for example. Certainly don't buy a pack loaded with excess features that you won't use and will add unnecessary weight. Just about any pack will carry 20 or 25 pounds pretty good since that's really not much weight, but if you need to carry heavier winter loads or much water buy the pack that can handle that with the most comfort. It's performance foolish to try and save a pound or two and with a pack that can't provide all day comfort under the load you intend to carry and if your loads must be on the heavier side for whatever reason don't judge a pack on weight alone.” 7:35:29 AM 1/17/02 “Unless I'm going to be out for 10 - 15 days, I can't think of 7000ci worth of stuff to carry. My biggest pack is a Peak 1 Rush (5200ci). I had 6 days worth of stuff in it before (coulda held more). That pack itself only weighs 3 1/2 pounds.” 5:18:48 PM 1/18/02 “Dude, some people need a lot of cu in to backpack in the winter. A stronger tent, warmer sleeping bag, fleece liner bag, extra warm clothes for around camp, extra fuel for melting snow. From what I have read, you are not as bothered by the cold as some people. But the cold weather is why some people need a backpack that can carry a lot of weight and cu in. It seems that hot weather people mostly are carrying a ton of water unless it is plentiful.” 5:33:42 PM 1/18/02 “I actually carry more weight for the warmer days than the real cold days. Water & Tent.” 7:28:44 PM 1/18/02 “Well said, Splash. I hate trying to load a too small backpack in the dead of winter with the wind chills below zero with gloves on and my gear frozen. Sure it's easy to do in the living room at home, but outside in rotten weather it's always harder to deal with and just a pain. I like and need my warm puffy clothes, hot drinks in sulated bottles during the day and at night, 2 sleeping pads, -15 degree bag, etc. I'd have a miserable trip if I'm cold so I bring what I need to stay comfortable no matter what.” 8:28:02 PM 1/18/02 “Fritz, I could sit inside that 7000 ci pack! hehehe” 8:42:35 PM 1/18/02 “It is actually 5500 plus the removable top flap which doubles a s a day pack and can hold an additional 1500ci. But I'll call you on it, Snow Nymph, when we meet for a trip, I wanna see you get in!” 9:33:19 PM 1/19/02 “In the summer, when all I really need is a tarp and a bug net, I've been using a 2100 ci NF Exocet frameless with two 500 ci side paniers. Empty pack weighs about two pounds and works great for up to four days.” 10:57:43 AM 1/21/02
