I walked 12 miles yesterday, and am just slightly sore, plus my blister returned. But reading those other threads 'bout hiking 67 miles in three days, jeeze, I feel like a wuss now!!”

Yep, you guessed it. Another boobs thread. However, this thread needs
serious attention. By now,we hope you have all heard about the Avon-Day, a 60 mile walk for breast cancer. A few of the Michigan Mountaineers will be participating in the Michigan Walk, from Ann Arbor to Detroit at the end of May.

1 in 8 women will have breast cancer in their lifetime, so its very likely you know, or will know, someone who has had the disease. 1 million women in the U.S. have breast cancer right now and don't even know it. And men are at risk too, man-boob breast cancer cases number 1500 every year, and 400 men die from it every year. This walk is about saving those 1 million men and women, and preventing the next million from ever getting the disease.

Through the Avon Products Foundation (think Avon Lady at your door) the money raised in these walks not only goes toward research of the disease, but also to help medically underserved women through education, diagnosis and treatment. The survival rate is 97%, but only if detected early.

I am very lucky that my aunt, a two-time breast cancer survivor is walking with us. Reformed Lurker's mother had breast cancer in 1996, but he lost her to another form of cancer just over a year ago. Needless to say, we are all pretty passionate about this cause. And we need your help.

Each of us needs to raise $1900 for the event. Please help us by making a tax-deductable donation. We ask that you consider a $50 donation, but you know what amount
is right for you. E-mail Tarabull (who is coordinating our income from TT) at tgluski@umd.umich.edu. Please let her know if you'd like to donate on-line or send a check, and she'll give you directions from there. We are using this method to split the donations evenly between the 4 of us.

“The question of how the donations are split has come up a couple times on emails...so to make it easy, I'll just explain it here instead.

When you request info on making an On-Line Donation, I will be instructing you make it on behalf of ONE walker. We (Smiley Girl, Sass and RL) agree this would be easiest on you.

Here's how it works: We alternate the walker getting sponsored. For instance... the first email I got from a TTer was instructed to
donate on behalf of Reformed Lurker, the next was instructed to donate on behalf of Sassafrass, and so on.

The only other option was to ask each TTer to make FOUR separate On-Line Donations. We thought our "alternating" method would be the easiest on all of you. Hope that makes sense.

The other reason this method is so great for us is because now we can help to make sure we all get enough money to participate. So, if it turns out that one
of us isn't close to our goal, then that person will start to get more of the donations than the other three... We are really trying to make sure that we all
get to participate.

What a team, eh?

Oh, last thing, please be sure to include your "real" name in the email. We are notified when donations are made on our behalf. If we know your name, we'll know if your donations are or are not rec'vd.

How much have you gotten towards your goal so far?”

“I followed tarabull's instructions and made a donation on-line with my credit card without too much trouble. Minimum donation by credit card is $25.

We do a lot of on-line shopping. My wife gets great deals on eBay all the time forused top name purses, belts, clothes, craft supplies, etc.”

“A few months ago I actually got the opportunity to sponsor a woman at work who has this disease. She shared her walk with us. Pretty inspiring, actually. First time she slept outside in a tent.

She's a fighter. She'll make it.”
