Walkindude, you can send Tarabull a check, or you can send the check directly to Avon. She'll give you the specifics.

I don't know how the others are doing, but I stand at $1600 right now. I'm about 1/2 way through my address book (most of my donations so far have come from co-workers) and havn't hit up my family yet. I've set a goal for myself at $4K. I've still got a long way to go!

Tekapo, I've read some journals of women who have done the walk before. They are incredibly inspiring.

Thanks again, everyone!

WOW Smiley, you're doing great! I am at a measly $400. Have yet to hit up the co workers and am terribly dissapointed in my family. There's still lots of time though. Also have several pledges from Dr's coming in the next few weeks hopefully. Should be bigguns.

Walkindude - I'll send you an email with the info.

We rec'v weekly updates on what has been sent in on our behalf. As of last Friday, I was at $490 (6 donations).

I should be further ahead, but I ran into an obstacle getting my "friend and family" letter out... procrastination. It went out last Friday though. So, in the next couple of weeks, I'll have a better idea of where I'm at.

I'm confident we can all raise the minimum amount. Especially with the support we've been rec'ving from our Trail Talk friends. THANKS

Don't forget
there are some friendly people on other sites, too. You'll recognize a couple of names here. One person did the walk in Denver last year and got some help from the online friends.

People usually pay to see this kind of protest
By John Kelso

American-Statesman Staff

Tuesday, February 5, 2002

Now this is something that qualifies as an uplifting experience.

Caroline Estes is organizing a mass protest of a new Austin police policy to ticket women who flash their breasts at the upcoming Mardi Gras celebration on Sixth Street.

"We're going to have an act of (breast) civil disobedience," said Caroline, an Austin businesswoman who used to go topless at Barton Springs Pool in the '70s. "Basically, it's going to be a peaceful act of civil disobedience where hundreds of women take off their shirts at once. Let them arrest all of us."

Now that's what I call a Kodak moment. A colleague asked if we were behind this, and I said, "Not me. I'm standing in front."

Caroline said she handed out 150 fliers Saturday night at Carnaval in the Austin City Coliseum "to all the topless women and drag queens. I got 40 drag queens that said they would all come, (breasts) and all. I'm going to give fliers to all the (topless) bars. That's a shoo-in." Yeah, but will they work for free?

The protest -- named something clever that rhymes with "sit-in" -- is scheduled for 11 p.m. Saturday at Sixth and Trinity streets. Both men (yech!) and women are welcome to take off their shirts for the movement. "Love fest no fighting!" the flier says. See, the reason the police are banning the exposing of female breasts at Mardi Gras on Sixth this year is, they say, that it starts fights among the guys.

"Oh, Lord, all we're trying to do is prevent the fights and disturbances," said Assistant Police Chief Jim Fealy (pronounced Faily, so stop laughing). "I'm not opposed to looking at a breast every now and then, but gollleee."

Caroline doesn't buy into the notion that flashing leads to fisticuffs. "I'm 43, and I'm not going to incite no riot with my (breasts)," she said. "I might start a stampede the other way." Hey, lady, trampled is trampled, OK?

Caroline is upset about the police decision in light of the fact that it's not illegal for women to expose their breasts in Austin. For Mardi Gras, the police are using a state law that says it's illegal to take part in a public display that causes a breach of the peace. But the old ways die hard.

"When they said no (breasts) on Sixth Street, they threw down the (breast) gauntlet," Caroline said. "The law in Austin says the women are allowed to be topless, and they can't change it for one or two nights to suit their fancy."

Fealy says the ruling is necessary because, for some reason, guys go nuts at Mardi Gras on Sixth when they are flashed. "I guess there's guys down there who haven't seen a breast before," he said.

One good thing about this protest is that often it's hard to get folks to work at events that are basically holidays for everybody else. Now that this demonstration has been announced, one wonders how many extra guy police officers will happily volunteer to report for duty Saturday night at Sixth and Trinity.

Incidentally, the new police ruling -- first-time offenders will be ticketed, and a repeat performance will lead to a custody arrest -- applies only to Mardi Gras on Sixth Street. So it's still OK, one supposes, for women to flash at the front desk at, say, the LBJ Library. Not that there's a lot of flashing that goes on at the LBJ Library.

How far would you walk to see someone you lost? I'd walk around the world to meet my grandmother, who died of breast cancer before I was born. 60 miles is just a start. I am ashamed to admit my ignorance of family history, but I just found out she died of breast cancer. I had no idea. That's three women in my family alone who have struggled with this disease. Who do you know who has struggled with breast cancer?

If the thought of making a large one-time contribution makes you hide your checkbook, consider a monthly pledge. It can be as little as $10 a month. Its easy, I promise. E-mail Tarabull at tgluski@umd.umich.edu to get the ball rolling.

Thanks so much to everyone who has already donated. We are very grateful to you!

Send In your Donations!!!!
As the husband of a breast cancer survivor I have a little understanding of what a woman with this disease goes through, it ain't pretty.

Early detection is the key, my wife was fortunate, it had not spread to her lymph nodes so all she lost was her breasts, not her life.

Sassafras and I went to a seminar on Sunday about the walk. They told us they would only sign up 3000 people (can you even imagine walking with 3000 people? talk about getting in your way!) for the event. They told us at the seminar that 3500 are signed up for the Michigan walk, and they will not close it. They have 6500 signed up for the Chicago walk, and will not close that one either. While I'm not looking forward to crossing a street with that many people, its going to be an incredibly powerful thing to see all those people there for the same purpose.

One other thing I forgot to add yesterday. I'd like to collect names and/or pictures of those who have had breast cancer, so please send them along if you wish. I'm either going to put them on a t-shirts for the walk, or make pink ribbons with their names on it and attach them to our fanny packs. We can walk in honor of those who have had the disease, victims or survivors.

I wlked 20 miles on the treadmill yesterday. It was mind numbing and boring but I wanted to see how I'd feel after the first twenty mile day. I felt great! Not even sore when I got out of bed this morning. Tarabull and I just finished up another 7 miles this am. We're turning into walking fools! :o)

Glad to help out yall!!

On looooong hikes, Be sure to stay hydrated. It keeps down cramps & shin splints, especially if the whole walk is on pavement. 20 miles per day is easy to cover. Just set a schedual and check your progress once in a while to make sure your on track for the day. When I did my long hike a few weeks ago I would go about 9 miles at a time before taking a break. When I did stop, I would take care of any water filtering, bathroom (tree) visits, Lunch, ect all at one stop. Keeps from needing to stop for something every mile or two. Yall don't have to walk fast but just steady.
Yall have the advantage of being able to split gear so pack weight won't be much at all. It really helps the group when the stronger hikers can help the not-as-strong hikers.
Have fun!!

If you can get them to Tara by the end of March, that would be great. We've still got a long way to go in our fundraising!

Sass asked the Kroger folks to sponsor our team, but they "don't sponsor individuals". I asked a local restaurant chain, but the owner's wife (who I know) is also doing the walk, so he couldn't help us out. Tara is going to ask her dad's company shortly. We need some corporate sponsorship! Anyone out there who can help us?

On the Avon discussion boards, one lady asked if the tents had floors, and what if it rained, etc, and is obviously petrified of sleeping in a tent. Wonder how she feels about peeing in a port-a-potty?

Today is my two-year anniversary at work, but it is also the two-year anniversary of my aunt's breast cancer surgery. After my first day here, I went straight to the hospital to be with may other family members. After 13 hours of surgery to remove her sternum, breast tissue, and major reconstruction, I got to see her in recovery. Today she is doing quite well.

Say an extra prayer today for my aunt, and all those who have been touched by this disease.

"I'll make it easy for everyone, and post the beginning again:

Yep, you guessed it. Another boobs thread. However, this thread needs
serious attention. By now,we hope you have all heard about the Avon-Day, a 60 mile walk for breast cancer. A few of the Michigan Mountaineers will be participating in the Michigan Walk, from Ann Arbor to Detroit at the end of May.

1 in 8 women will have breast cancer in their lifetime, so its very likely you know, or will know, someone who has had the disease. 1 million women in the U.S. have breast cancer right now and don't even know it. And men are at risk too, man-boob breast cancer cases number 1500 every year, and 400 men die from it every year. This walk is about saving those 1 million men and women, and preventing the next million from ever getting the disease.

Through the Avon Products Foundation (think Avon Lady at your door) the money raised in these walks not only goes toward research of the disease, but also to help medically underserved women through education, diagnosis and treatment. The survival rate is 97%, but only if detected early.

I am very lucky that my aunt, a two-time breast cancer survivor is walking with us. Reformed Lurker's mother had breast cancer in 1996, but he lost her to another form of cancer just over a year ago. Needless to say, we are all pretty passionate about this cause. And we need your help.

Each of us needs to raise $1900 for the event. Please help us by making a tax-deductable donation. We ask that you consider a $50 donation, but you know what amount
is right for you. E-mail Tarabull (who is coordinating our income from TT) at tgluski@umd.umich.edu. Please let her know if you'd like to donate on-line or send a check, and she'll give you directions from there. We are using this method to split the donations evenly between the 4 of us.

Thanks for your support.

Well, my birthday plans were an absolute pisser. My own mother didn’t even remember it. One person, knowing fully well what I was planning to do with my birthday money, purposely bought me a CD so I COULDN’T give to the boobs fund. What a selfish beeatch!
