Anybody run? “Who runs for exercise? Do you think it's fun? How far and how often? Do you run in the woods?” 11:37:35 AM 1/18/02 “i run in the woods when it's light out after work. otherwise, it's hard for me to get up the motivation...so i've been slacking lately, and after running 3 times this week, my ankles are killing me!! i don't know if it's my shoes (not specifically running shoes) or what, but ouch!” 11:51:54 AM 1/18/02 “beer run?” 11:56:38 AM 1/18/02 “Only when I can't hide.” 11:58:40 AM 1/18/02 “i am starting to run before basic training” 12:01:00 PM 1/18/02 “oh, lighten up, you guys! no need to take everything so seriously, sheesh...” 12:01:04 PM 1/18/02 “I'm with rad-” 12:22:45 PM 1/18/02 “I run about two miles every other day” 12:27:45 PM 1/18/02 “I run on a treadmill at lunch, not quite the same as running in the woods.” 12:37:25 PM 1/18/02 “i run. i usually do road races (from 5k's to marathons). however, last february i did a 8 mile trail run that about killed me. killed me dead. no more woods running.” 2:30:31 PM 1/18/02 “I run because there was a time I couldn't. I do think it's fun when the endorphins kick in. I figure if I can't run in Texas, I won't be much good hiking with a pack in the Rockies! I do 3-5 miles a couple times a week. But this is hard to believe!” 3:10:40 PM 1/18/02 Wounda Coulda Shoulda “I'f I would've ran...I prolly wouldn't be in the predicament I'm in today.” 3:15:02 PM 1/18/02 “I would run in the woods..... iffin i saw a skeery woof bare! and Buddur? Are you injured? I guess I missed a thread somewhere.” 3:27:00 PM 1/18/02 “Speaking of running, I pretty much got everything I wanted for Christmas this year. Although, as I get older, there's less I want. A few pairs of socks and maybe a warm shirt. Sure enough, that's what I got, plus a few extras I hadn't even wished for, like the Chariots of Fire DVD box set. I still haven't gotten around to watching it, because I don't care for shoot-'em-up pictures.” 3:40:37 PM 1/18/02 “I haven't been since the holidays but I try to run about 5 miles a week. Over the long-term I think a hiking/walking regimen is better for my bones.” 3:55:20 PM 1/18/02 “I think sex is better for my bone.” 3:58:42 PM 1/18/02 “I don't run, they give me a varsity letter in track because I walk slow.” 11:16:35 PM 1/18/02 “Copied from backpacking.net: "...I usually start my workouts by stretching the truth. I follow up with some aerobics by walking all over people, chasing rumors, and running down my coworkers. I exercise my muscles by pushing my luck and hoisting my work onto others. I work on agility by dodging responsibility and jumping to conclusions. I finish off by pumping aluminum and 12 ounce curls. I am pretty tired by then, so I nap..." Sounds like my kind of workout.” 11:40:23 PM 1/18/02 “I used to fit my life around running. Now I fit running around my life and that means between one and three times a week. I enjoy doing 4 miles plus on each run. I love the meditative aspect of long distance running. Something about the brain cells being super-oxygenated brings on some profound thoughts and some good poems. Then I come home and forget them.” 2:07:18 AM 1/19/02 “I used to run more, but now I mainly bike. I do, however, try and run at least on once a week for 5k.” 3:34:33 AM 1/19/02 “We have a nice park with a few trails through its woods. I run 4 miles 4x per wk, right now its on a treadmill cause its cold and icy outside...in the warm months I go outside.” 5:06:39 AM 1/19/02 “My 48 year old knees let me know when I run too much, so biking is my outdoor workout of choice now. I'll save my knees for hiking. Indoors I stairmaster, bike, Nordic Track, and elliptic trainer, alternating every couple of weeks. I usually go for 45-60 minutes. Some weightlifting sets before and after the aerobic workout. I try to vary the weight routine every 4-6 weeks. I still have some middle-age spread that I just can't get rid of.” 12:26:30 AM 1/20/02 “I've run for over 30 years; track, cross country, high school, college. Then road racing hit in the 70's and I was running marathons, 10K's, 5K's. I even ran a 2:25 marathon and missed the Olympic trials qualifier by 3 minutes. That really got me going. 100-120 mile weeks, the works. I had very few injuries along the way--until now. I injured my post-tibial tendon and my arch was falling. The orthopedic surgeon recommended surgery to repair the tendon and rebuild my arch. If not, it could jeopardize my ability to even hike! I had trouble with it on a backpacking trip last summer. I finally had the surgery in December and am in the recovery mode now. I just got out of the cast (5 weeks) and am in a boot for 3 weeks (at least now I can shower without a garbage bag around my leg.) I should be able to run this spring and the prognosis is that I'll be nearly as strong as before. But, the writing's on the wall; less running- more biking, skiing and hiking, or I'll crater again!” 9:40:04 AM 1/20/02 “I too have been a runner all my life.In the beginning it was therapy for me.(Not physical but mental)Later it was an addiction to the point that I was running 5 miles every day for work and then 5 miles on my own after work. Now I just run because I have to.I have to pass a physical phitness test every six months.Oh by the way did I mention that I've been a soldier for the last 19 years and I ran cross country in High School.LOL!I have one more year and I am going to quit running!!!!!!!” 4:30:18 PM 1/20/02 “Every occupation seems to have its associated ailment. Musicians have hearing problems late in life, baseball players have bad shoulders, firefighters bad lungs, truck drivers back problems, etc. The common ailment among older and retired forest and park rangers is bad knees and hips -- the result of spending a lifetime hiking and working in the woods.” 7:38:12 PM 1/20/02 “I jog she's a little RUNNUHUHUHUHNN AWAY I know the difference cause I was married to someone like Aero.” 8:06:27 PM 1/20/02 “I don't run unless someone's chasing me BUT I've been walking my arse off lately. Just finished nine miles and did nine yesterday. Total for this week was 26.5. That breast cancer walk has a training schedule much like a marathon. I've been trying to stick to it. It's soooo easy to make excuses not to do it especially when it's mainly on a treadmill. Ever done nine miles on a treadmill? I go 4 mph; that's two + hours. Can get a bit tedious if there's not a good book or movie involved. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can hit the streets!” 8:37:46 PM 1/20/02 “Before anyone else notices and rags me about my spelling of (fitness)/phitness LOL I think I'll correct myself! LOL!” 10:41:58 PM 1/20/02 “I keep making excuses, its been about 2 years since I ran.” 1:49:27 AM 1/21/02 “I was running 5K/10Ks every weekend! Sometimes I'd run a race on Sat AND Sun. I was running trail races, running through vineyards, to the top of Mt. Baldy and Mt Wilson. I got obsessed about beating my race times. I injured my hip on my last marathon and pretty much gave up racing. I ran the LA marathon, then a month later started training for the PV Marathon. There was so much pain it hurt to walk. For a few years I ran 3 days/week, then 3 times/month, then made lots of excuses. I keep saying I'll jog again someday.” 2:12:18 AM 1/21/02 “I'm gearing up for a June Marathon(my first) Just ran 6 miles today...It felt great, except for my legs are always tight the first 2 miles or so. Once, the endorphins kick in, I'm loving it. Also, I listen to my minidsic player while running...the right music is extremely motivational..” 2:16:14 AM 1/21/02 “WAS running 3x/week. Damaged acchilles tendon. Have scar tissue in it. RUnning hurts. Trying to work on stretching. Wear orthodectics etc. Now run 1-2x/week. Stationary bike, elliptical orbiter 1-2x/week. Orthopedic surgeon told me last Thursday that the condition will NEVER go away . . .unless he cuts out the scar tissue. Which he DID not reccommend (unless the pain debilitates me). happy happy joy joy. AT age 36 I have two nagging chronic pains, shoulder and achilles!!” 10:33:05 AM 1/21/02 “Run one day. Lift weights the next. Average run 3 miles. I have run 5 miles every year on my birthday ever since I turned 30. Last year was 18 in a row. I was out of commission for about 4 months this year (after my birthday run) due to back surgery. But now back at it and getting stronger every day.” 11:07:27 AM 1/21/02 “I run every other day when it's not so cold and the roads aren't icy. When it is cold, I swim, but I'm only going once a week 'cause I'm in crappy shape right now.” 11:14:03 AM 1/21/02 “Sass, I tried to do 4mph on the treadmill on Saturday, and I couldn't keep up when the treadmill gave me "hills". I didn't quite get my 9 miles in, I got kicked out of the gym because they were closing. Didn't make it on Sunday either, so I'm behind in my training. Gonna try to get 4+ miles in tonight if I can get on a treadmill that long. No running for me though. I ran hurdles in jr. hi, but I wasn't very good (maybe it was my short legs). Run once in a while on the treadmill, but I can only take it for a 1/2 mile or so.” 11:30:51 AM 1/21/02 “lee sounds like your surgeon is trying to sell you a surgery! I had damaged achilles tendons and my MD said I was old (32) and i'd have to slow down. After finding a podiatrist my age who ran, he got me started doing what you are doing and taking lots of anti-inflamatories. The condition DID clear up after a few years of keeping the juices flowing on a regular basis. So don't give up! You've got lots of years of running before your knee joints give out. You guys have reminded me why I like Texas better every winter. If it's too cold to run, I just put it off until tomorrow!” 6:08:18 PM 1/24/02 “Aero and a lot of others on this thread have fought the good fight. That is what you are committed to when you love to run.” 6:20:21 PM 1/24/02 “So, what is a runner's high?” 9:41:53 PM 1/24/02 “Toejam - Where are you in Texas? Thought I was the only one here that backpacked..everyone else, ropes, rides or chews tobaccy..lol I'm in Central Texas south of Dallas. Tex” 10:07:50 PM 1/24/02 “heh. That's funny Tex. When you said 'ropes' or 'rides' I immediately thought rock climbing and bike riding. ..until you said "chew tobaccy"” 10:11:11 PM 1/24/02 “Whoa Nelly! Central Texas is alot more than a stone's throw from Dallas! About like saying Corpus Christi is in the Valley. I'm in central Texas, just north of the "live music capital of the world" to be exact. I run 30+ miles a week. Trail run once a week on my "long" run at Lake Georgetown. Haven't had any old injuries(illiotibial band) creep back in over 5 years. Lucky, I guess. It's never too cold to run in Tejas, unless you live in Dalhart...” 10:47:01 PM 1/24/02 “"Ropes and rides"...sounds more like some kinda S+M thing.” 2:21:14 AM 1/25/02 “i am just getting back into running after a six month layoff....i'm hitting the treadmill pretty hard right now and have joined a running club here at work....i hope to be ready to compete in a half marathon at athens, ohio in april and then try the traverse city, michigan marathon memorial day weekend.... wish me luck....i'm a gonna need it!!” 3:00:02 AM 1/25/02 “Bix - concerning runner's high - not sure about others - but for me - after about 30 to 40 minutes of running I get a calm feeling where I feel slightly detached from my body and it runs on autopilot and I feel I could run like that for hours. Technically - I think it is a release of endorphins.” 4:48:30 AM 1/25/02 “Biz, to be more correct, I get a JOGGER'S high. I hope your ex didn't ruin that for you, but it's where it hurts for the first 1-2 miles and then stops hurting and I don't care if it takes me 10 minutes/mile because I'm still running at 41 and will live better and longer than my fat-ass friends! And I come home feeling like I kicked the grim reaper's butt. I live just outside Ft. Worth, and dag-nabbit, I'm missing the stock show for the 15th straight year! I live here cause you can make a buck and live well here. I'm a bit concerned that my children will grow up thinking they are Texans, so I take them on vacations so they know this is not the center of the universe.” 7:53:21 AM 1/25/02 “Toejam -- Appreciate the input. Actually, (hard to tell from my post) . .my doctor was NOT advocating surgery. He said: "you do NOT want me to do that [cut out the scar tissue]". Not at least, until I can get out of the bed in the morning and go to work because of the pain. He, (my doc.) is an avid and compulsive runner. RE: Running in the winter. I love (love is an odd word)running is the winter ,. . .in crappy conditions. In sleet and snow. Its and adventure. An endurance against the elements thing. Sort of like backpacking is . . .but only for 45 minutes. I would much much prefer to run in weather 65 degrees to 10 degrees than in weather above.” 8:25:06 AM 1/25/02 “Dopamine, baby. The runners high! When the endorphins kick in after a few miles, the gods smile upon you. I hear that distance runners have a higher tolerance for physical pain, also.” 8:44:38 AM 1/25/02 “Running is energizing, its uplifting, its mind-clearing its defiant.” 7:30:07 PM 1/25/02
