Hey mans and womans, let's doo a poll.

Womans: Do you prefer hot weather or cool/cold?

Men: Same question.

It's my observation and experience that womans can't stand cold weather, and would much prefer to be sweating in 94 degree heat with 70% humidity than 46 degrees and a pleasant wind (pleasant to men) in the mountains.

Huh? Tru or fals?

Now, now, that all depends on how hot and how cold...

I'm not all that fond of winter. BUT... in the instance you cited -- which is a bit different -- I would go with the mountains every time. In fact, each summer I try to get out of this humid hellhole and get to the mountains. If it gets down near freezing overnight, so much the better. :-)

With the semi-nice weather we had been having here in Ioway -- up until winter actually seemed to arrive in early January -- heck, I'd wear shorts to the health club and the later trip uptown. When I headed home I saw it was around 30 out. No biggie. Lots of people are like that here. If it's above 30, they're game for shorts. LOL!

No higher than the mid 80's for me & I can't take humidity at all. No lower than the 20's and no wind. Those are my prefs. Of course this in Montana and those prefs. rarely happen (except the humidity part, it is normally very low).

I like hot weather if I am not backpacking or hiking.

Cold weather is much nicer for hiking and backpacking, although the nighttime cold is a question mark. I haven't been backpacking yet where nighttime temps got below freezing.

In December, 1955, in northern Sweden, I bought two pairs of heavy, wool socks. I still use one pair for backpacking and to deep my feet warm in the sleeping bag whenever it is cold. let's see, that's 46 years for those socks.

I don't worry about hot or cold weather. I just try to enjoy myself wherever I may be. Every locality, where I've been, has some nice features.

For climate extremes, I have lived in Minnesota and in the Republic of Panama.

I recommend living today to generate pleasant memories for tomorrow!

If I had to choose between extremely heat or extreme cold, I'd go for extreme cold (assuming I have adequate clothing, of course).

My wife, on the other hand, can't stand the cold. She'd much prefer extreme heat.

Last year we moved from California to Massachusetts (we both come from Massachusetts, so we're used to the cold). She can't stand the cold, especially after being in California. I'm actually loving the winter here. I've really adapted to the cold quite nicely. :)

Since meeting the Mich. hikers I've got a new way of looking at winter. I used to dread winter because summer is so much fun, now I enjoy it also. Thanks guys.
Still can't find any partners to hike and BP with in the winter though.

Well, I would have to say I prefer the heat.
We moved from WA state in Sept to Jax, FL and I love it!
I went back to WA state last week and got the chance to do some dayhikes and I did not like the cold and wet at all anymore(my bones ached and creaked from old army injuries) I will take the heat anyday!!!

Sweden
"Hey slim-
...
How was Sweden?"
JOSH MAN

Sweden was great. That's the answer, so it is your choice if you want to continue reading my ranblings

In Dec., 1955, I rode trains from Stuttgart, Germany, to Sundsvall, Sweden, 3rd. class, a 51 hour trip, with two ferry boat crossings. On the first crossing it was dark, cold, rainy and gloomy around midnight and I felt about the same after 30 hours of travel. I was alone on a glassed-in deck of the ferry. Suddenly, from out of nowhere appeared some beautiful "angels" all dressed in white. The primary one wore a crown with small, burning candles. She carried a tray of cookies and such and offered some to me. The others provided coffee and laughter. It was midnight and St. Lucia Day had just started, the start of the Christmas Season. That was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

In Stockholm I had a few minutes between trains. Almost stepped in front of a car. They drive on the wrong side. In Sundsvall I attended the wedding of a good friend of mine. I spent several days playing in the snow, standing on the long runners of a sled. It had one seat in the front and was steered by twisting the bar mounted on the top back of the seat. I did good because I once had such a sled in Chicago. But I did miss a few turns and flew over the top of the seat when I encountered some snow banks. Daylight was about 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.

The next summer three of us drove through Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a fantastic experience. In Gotenburg we were dined royally by some relatives of my Grandfather. In Sweden we visited relatives and saw a beautiful house in the forest where my Grandmother was born. After three days we left to sober-up. The host keep saying lets go in and have some coffee. But with each cup of coffee we had to consume about three shots of aquavit. Somewhere, along the highway we were stopped by the police,<>/b who overtook us from behind. One of the guys had left his camera in a restaurant about 20 miles back and and about 10 miles down on a side road. The police returned the camera to him. We split after Stockholm and I took a boat to Visby, the only walled city left in Northern Europe. It is on the island of Gutland in the Baltic Sea. I did get a guided tour of most of the island by my step-father's father. We saw a military unit moving swiftly along on bicycles. Rejoining my friends in Copenhagen, we completed a great trip.

So to answer your question again, Sweden was great.

I love the cold, especially the very dry high altitude cold. I generally hate anything over 70 unless I'm swimming or someting like that. Dry heat is okay much better then moist heat, but it's still not my favorite.

I prefer warm over cold, but hate humidity. I have no real "cold weather" backpacking gear or clothing. I think I would like winter camping/backpacking if I had the proper equipment and could stay warm and dry. I love to ski, but have only done it falling snow/cold conditions once or twice.

Today I could have been either in the mountains skiing, or at the beach sunning in less than 1 hour drive. (Instead I am home working--what's wrong with this picture?).

I love camping in the winter. This weekend I spent my first night of the year below zero under the stars. I can't even begin to describe how awesome it is.

As luck would have it, I've met some great hikers here who also like winter camping. Fantastic!

I don't hike much between Memorial Day and Labor Day. We do more car camping with the wife and kids.
