Those Ba$tards
A loan was to mature this month and the payments have been automatically withdrawled from my checking account on the 4th of each month.

Well, during the last week of December, I got a maturation statement saying to bring this blue envelope and the included info to the bank to make the last payment. So I did. One of their associates, NOT a teller, tells me that if she deposits the cash, by the time holidays are over and the deposit posts, the automatic withdrawl would've occurrred and there'll be a problem. So she tells me to wait for the automatic withdrawl.

So today I get practically the same blue envelope and statement that I got last month, but this one says I was delinquent in payment AND there's a late fee attached.

I got the mail 20 minutes before the banks closed today, so I went to the bank and it was closed. I raced to another branch and talked to a lady who, next Tues, I need to meet with so we can talk with the a loan person about this predicament.

I have a few other beefs with First Merit Bank as they cater to new customers much more than their old regulars. I can't wait to change banks!!!

Why!!!
Why they just couldn't and didn't automatically withdrawl the last payment I'll prolly never know?

get out of debt and stay out of debt - always pay credit card bills in full - if you don't have the money in the bank to cover the purchase then don't buy it - exceptions only made for medical emergencies (smile)

I wish I could get someone to suck the turds out of my butt - it is such a drag taking care of it the usual way. And if something would take of my dogs' turds - that would be a godsend!!

In all seriousness - BANKS SUCK!!! HOI has a point but it isn't practical for most of us to live completely debt free. Good luck fighting the system!

After working for bank and being in several high level meetings where stratagies are discussed, I can honestly say that banking (particularly credit cards) is an evil business were predatory practices are the status quo.

I can't wait till my contract is up.

Follow the food chain to the top and chew on all you stand in your way until satisfaction in offered.

Make it very clear the the clerk in a sense refused the money!
Some bloodsucker above her/him will
not like that.
Pull your credit reports-
Write a letter to all of the credit reporting agencies and challenge the report if the issue shows up there-they have 30 days to remove it if it is not vaild.
They might wait in a warm corner of Hell for a while for that late fee.

I'm A Loner...Won't You Please Leave Me A Loan
The loan I had was to put a new engine in my van. Coming home from New Years Eve 1999>2000 in Big Cypruss, FL from a Phish concert, my engine died in the black hole of the east coast, Statesville, NC, on a Sunday none the less. Got a hotel, and the next day rented a U-Haul and towed the van home. Replacing engines is expensive...I needed the loan!

I did have a blast that trip. It was worth it...I think!?!?

Just recycling an old thread...
...on the subject of banks.

This one concerns Chase Manhattan, a bank that has gotten too big and as is par for that fact, the hand hand doesn't know what the left is doing there...

I called their automated system yesterday to check on 15 bucks that i have had sitting in an inactive checking account (been inactive for about 2 years) The reason the money is still there is that I had to pay off a debt to them, which I was faithful on and finished about 2 years ago. I got the proper paperwork to prove my debt was paid and boy, am I glad i still have the whole file. So, when I went through the automated menu, it said, "you gross balance is 15 dollars." The next message blew me away. It said, "your available credit is $999,999.99.

at first I thought that either Maple bought a very expensive kayak or had donated $100,000 to the wildlife fund. I quickly disspelled these notions and realized that they made an error. I called and they apparently still have me as outstanding. So, this will have to be dealt with. Glad I saved that file...

So you wrote some bad checks. It happens to a lot of people... Not to me, but a lot of people.

I didn't write any bad checks, Phaed. It didn't happen like that. Several things happened at once. Someone got hold of our numbers and bought porn with 1200 dollars of our money. While we were sorting it out, I still had some automatic monthly withdrawals coming out of the account. Chase only covered half of our loss by the theft. Then, I lost my job and had trouble paying back the overdrafts.

And have you learned a valuable lesson about buying things online with a card that is not fraud-protected?

If so... NOT SO FAST! A friend that was travelling in Germany with us two years ago had her account raided while she was there. It turns out that she had paid a restaurant bill with her debit card, and the waiter had stolen her card with a neat little device the size of a pager. He was caught, but much later.

IMO, only pay for transactions that you are not personally winessing with a credit card, rather than a debit card.

I never go with the debit card anymore, Phaed. I don't think you can fully protect yourself from anything anymore, but at least you can do what you can and hope for the best...

I worked for Chase Manhattan Bank until the late 1980's. They were an $80+ Billion dollar bank then. I can't imagine how big they've gotten with J.P. Morgan.

It's huge. And their customer relations have gotten much worse.

Let's not even mention the exorbitant fees. I'm with a smaller bank now. No fees. They are fine with me. Just want to finish this biz with Chase and close out...

Bring Chase Manhattan Back Into The Spotlight
Has anyone wvwe had someone write you a check and you decided to go to their bank and cash it. Well, I've done this on numerous occasions.

My mom wrote me a check for 200 bucks from her account with Chase. I want to be able to cover a check that i wrote and I figured that if I took the cash and then put it into my account, that I don't have to run into any waiting pereiods for it to clear, should the check go in over the next few days. Well, Chase tells me that unleass I have an account at that bank, they will not cash a check under any circumstances. I haven't really dine this for a few years. Is this a common policy at other banks or another "customer relations" brainchild coming from the mind of Chase Manhattan?

With Credit Unions being around everywhere, I have no idea why anyone would even bother with banks. Too much hassel.

Good luck

I think most banks will at least charge a fee for cashing a check for non-account holders. I don't think I ever heard of a bank refusing to cash a check drawn from one of their accounts at all.

You would think it would be to the bank's advantage to cash a check drawn on their bank. They can easily check to make certain there are funds available in the account to cover the check.

I've always been able to do this by providing picture ID with a signature like a drivers license.

Perhaps they have to deal with a large number of stolen checks in the Manhattan area...

So have I. My jaw dropped when they told me that. The money is there. I have about 4 ID's I could have presented. I never heard of anything like that...
