Which do you prefer, gloves or mittens.. and why?

Also, what kind of hat/headgear do you usually use to keep the noggin warm during the winter?

Myself: gloves, though I'm wondering if mittens might be warmer. I prefer a beanie, head-sock deal. Snug and traps the heat well, plus it can pulled down over the ears to keep them warm.

I'm a glove guy. Mittens are warmer but I prefer the manual dexterity. For working I use a pair of military flight gloves under my flannel lined leather gloves.

For real cold weather I use a shroud designed for hard hats. Covers the side of the face all the way to my chin. Then I wear a knit cap or fleece beanie over that.

new stuff
I just bought a Hind polypro beanie and a balaclava for those real cold days/nights. Historicly I always wore a baseball cap or my felt hat. but with the new "ski" style, now I have something that I can sleep in too. I have gloves with the fingers cut off half way and a mitten head that folds over the fingers. they are knit wool and thinsulate lined, I like them very much, but not in the rain, fo rain I have a gortex knockoff with thinsulate lining, very warm, and water proof and half the price of the "gortex" brand. got them at a flea market. $8.00

Mittens while snowboarding (fingers stay MUCH warmer), but I wear gloves for just about everything else.

Gloves.
I like using poly Pro liners w/Rag Wool gloves.
Gotta admit, I've never tried mittens though.

it varies a lot with the temp as to what I will use - in descending order of temp, slightly cool - cheap cotton work gloves, cooler - polypro mittens, cold - polypro mittens with polester glove liners, colder - add nylon "lobster claw" over mittens, coldest - stay inside (grin)

I use Polypro liners by themselves and when it gets cold I take them off and use a thinsulate lined wool glove. I found that having the liner glove on under the wool glove is too restrictive and actually makes my hands colder because the blood cant flow to the extremities.
I do have some of those OR Mazama mittens with a dryloft shell that I bought at a sale for $20(AUD)

On my bonce I use a polartec beanie that has ear flaps. If its really cold I'll put a polypro balaclava.

Mountain Hardware windproof fleeze gloves, with some nylon overmitts in the pack. Outdoor Research windproof fleece hat and balaclave of same material if its really cold.

You hit a hole in my cold weather gear. I have really great wool gloves, but they can get a little damp. I've been eyeing some waterproofs at a local store, but they are like 30 bucks.

I use one of those cylindrically-shaped ear warmers, but I keep a ski mask in reserve. When it gets near/below zero with heavy winds, every little patch of skin needs some help.

But, really, if I'm moving, I don't need a hat unless it's in the teens or lower.

Here in the Northwoods I've learned over the years to have a full range of choices.

For cool to mild cold, I wear wool berets. For general winter weather, I have an A16 brand fleece and Goretex lined "trooper" style hat that is waterproof, very light weight, and quite warm -- highly recommended, I've worn it a lot over quite a few years, shows little wear. Also have an "Inca" style fleece hat that is very warm, and keep a polypro balaclava in my pack all year for surprises or head warmth in the sleeping bag.

Mild cold and around town, fleece gloves w/leather palm patches; colder, midweight waterproof hunting or ski gloves; truly cold weather combined with something like snowshoeing will have me switching to polypro or Capline liner gloves and insulated overmitts. Sometimes I'll mix in some wool or poly fingerless gloves.

I wear glove liners with a pair of polartech mittens in reserve (in the pack) to go over them if needed. I also am a huge fan of the turtlefur balaclava. And have an awesome hat that's a wool blend with a polartech band that dips over the ears. Not really flaps but could be folded up if necessary. I NEVER used to wear a hat, just an ear band but recently cut my hair short and my head gets COLD w/o the long curly locks!
