Is Anybody Coming to Arizona?

“This is really a trip report in disguise...
I had a wonderful weekend backpacking. The weather is perfect (AZ is great for winter backpacking). I found a really cool backpacking partner, went into the deep wilderness, got to use my new gear and was reminded that I really love about backpacking above a lot of things.

I just wanted to extend this invitation to everyone. If anyone is in AZ or planning to be in AZ I would be happy to show you some cool hiking spots.”

I have friends in Phoenix and sometimes family in Tucson who I visit occasionally. Where do you do your hiking? I've only hiked Squaw Peak and wandered around the desert when I was in high school.

Now is the coolest time in the Grand Canyon. It actually gets pretty cold in the canyon (of course what's the temp in Alaska now?). Spring and Fall are best (May or October). Also it's about a six hour drive from Luke AFB to the south rim.”

“Tucson May Treat Sewage for Potable Water

TUCSON, Ariz. - Using treated sewage for drinking water could help sustain the supply here, said the director of the city's water company.

The sewage now trickles into groundwater outside Tucson's water supply, but putting it below Tucson Water wells now may prevent problems later, Tucson Water Director David Modeer said.

Tucson also should raise the allowable mineral content in drinking water to avoid costly treatment of the Colorado River water the city receives, Modeer said.

"The era of relatively inexpensive water has passed in this community, and it has passed in many western communities as well," Modeer said.

Inaction is not an option, and the city must chart a course by 2006 to keep water flowing through 2050, he said.
