Whisperlite stove
I am in the market for a backpack stove. From the reviews the whisperlite International seems like a very good stove. Do any of you fellow backpackers know where I can find one of these stoves. ie mail order catalogs, sporting good stores in the lexington Ky area ect. Any feedback will be appricated

I don't care for MSR stoves but I am in the minority.
They should be available just about anywhere-
I would not pay for the multi-fuel feature unless you plan to go out of the country.
I am not wild about them beacause they tend to flare up and are very loud. The ones have had also left lots of black carbon on pots and the "collar".
Lots of folks love them.

Josh Man, I've had a Whisper Lite for years now and have never had a problem with my pots getting black. Flare ups are rare and usually caused by improperly lighting the stove. Loud, yes some models are, the Dragon Fly especially. However, my Whisper Lite is no louder than any other white gas stove out there. Louder than a canister gas stove yes, but you can't use a canister everywhere I go.

What kind of fuel are you running anyway?

I wouldn't get the whisper light international. I would just go with the whisper light. You can get white anywhere. If you use regular auto gas in them they will burn dirty. Why spend the money when the cheaper one works better I think.

Anywhere??? been there and they did not have white, black or any other type of gas. Kerosene they had, they use it in lamps. Propane they had to cook with. I would rather have some black on my pots and a full stomach than no black. The 3rd world can be just off your closest interstate!

Mr. Elam
They have them in stock at Phillip Galls. It's on the Southeast loop of New Circle, South of US 60, across from the Volvo and Saturn dealerships in the Woodhill Shopping Center. They also carry all of the accessories.

My Whisper Lite came with an extra jet that will allow you to burn Kerosene. I agree that it is tough to find white gas outside of the US however, unleaded gas is available just about everywhere these days. But Kerosene is still the universal fuel of world travellers.

Have a look at a Primus Himalaya, The one that burns the canisters. If it's still in your budget buy that. The MSR has two settings, Full blast or off, they are buggers to try to simmer with.

If you want to simmer, get the Dragonfly.

I have the MSR XGK Expedition...and I love it.

I did have to use unleaded gas in it and it worked fine, just smelled a lot worse than white gas.

This was in Colorado too...I figured I would find white gas closer to the trailhead and I didn't.

20 years of MSR stoves
First one worked fine for extended use for 10 years, but I decided to upgrade to the shaker-jet model. A jewel -- yes, it works with ALMOST EVERY fuel, I've also had a few other stoves for specific purposes (e.g. high altitude mountaineering, big wall climbing etc.) Only problem with Whisper International is finding decent fuel in western china -- filtering doesn't help --- its some chemical additive that burns like crap and requires constant cleaning.

It's probably still leaded gas over there.

How about low temps and Altitude? Last time I was in 30 degree temps, my stupid Camping GAZ stove wouldn't boil already boiled water sitting on top of a fire!

What gas do you think works in zero temps?

I think white gas works best for the low temperatures compared to the canisters.

Not sure how white gas burns in cold compared against kerosene.

I'm leaning towards a white gas stove for winter packing. I love my Superfly canister but it struggles in the cold. I would want to simmer which leads me to the Dragonfly, but what about the Optimus Nova? It looks like a great stove. Anybody use that one?

Hmmmmmm....
Remember when I came into camp with all the extra white gas?

I thought I was falling behind on my gear when everyone said they had canister stoves.

Besides the fact I kept misplacing matches I think my stove boiled water pretty quick. Would you agree?

I still think I might get a canister stove for the warmer weekend trips though. Especially since I saw how quick they light and the fact that they simmer!

Feen - your stove worked great, which is a big reason why I'm considering white gas (just for winter). Also, I think yours was the only stove that "Bull" didn't knock over!

On altitude and cold
Burned the international to 25,000 ft above sea levelwit temps as low as minus 40 -- chinese fuel sucks hard -- yes, even the unleaded has wacky chemicals in it. And good luck finding white gas or kersene in western china. You can find Gaz canisters in Urumqi --- but best bet would be to take a multi-connector Primus, fly to Pakistam (where you can buy cheap refilled gaz canisters), then make tour way up the Karakorum into China. If you go with a gaz canister stove, make sure you get one that accepts both screw and pop-on canisters -- sucks to find out the country you are in doesn't ha va thecorrect type.
