Books
Help, need to get out, getting humanity fever. Need trails fast or a good woman to take my mind off the great outdoors. A good book might do for a pinch. How about a list of good books.

I have had books up to my yin/yang this Christmas season. LeCarré's 'Constant Gardener' is so far the best he's done in years IMHO. I also bought 'Tournament of Shadows' after listening to a panel discuss it on CBC. I forget the name of the husband and wife team who wrote it, but will post it if someone asks. Its subtitle is 'The Race for Empire in Central Asia'; it's about Russian, British and Chinese rivaly since the beginning of the 18th century in and around Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan western China (Xingyan), Tibet and northern India. It's both beautifully written and fascinating. I put everything else aside except for 'Lord of the Flies' which I had to re-read for my Language Arts class. I buddy gave me a beautifully illustrated book on Climbing the I've only had time to gaze at the photos. The 'Tournament...' is absolutely required reading in these troubled times if you want to know much about what's happening. I just hope our leaders read it or get someone to do it for them - 632 pages, all dense - ouch. Happy trails. A tip, mountaineers sometimes rip out chapters and share them out so that no one person has the full load of what they'll probably get read, but I could never do that.

The Shining is good if you are suffering from cabin fever.

You get winter blues, I get summer blues. Fall and winter is when I come alive and do most of my hiking. Come spring I start getting depressed and by May I'm into summer hibernation (in the air conditioning) until fall.

I agree with Josh Man's book recommendation: "Into the Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer. He also wrote "Into the Wild" which is also fantastic. Both are must reads for any outdoorsman..

Why thanks all, but I have already read most of them but its sounds like a few new prospects. I could get out but the snow is deep and the kids also must come along since I have them more often than not and they hate snow hiking so far.(To much work for kids) I shall try for a solo day soon when their mommy (a real troll)can take them for a day. Thanks again.
