I am up and so are a lot of people. and I have a few questions to ask.

1) I need to find a good set of regualar nylon mesh sacks in all kinds of sizes but I can only for $10 and up. Anyone know where i can get them for cheaper?

2) I have heard about black pot paint before. Where can i find it?

3) should I get a whisperlight?

4) For rain gear I only have a pauncho. Does anyone know of a place that sells them for cheap, but are of good quality?

i also need a good trail pankake recipe.

Good Trail Pancake Recipe
Any just-add-water pancake mix will do. Put powder in ziploc bag and when ready to mix, just pour water into baggie and kneed. It don't get any gooder than that.

Isn't it only 9 PM in California? How does that qualify as insomnia? For crying out loud, it's only midnight on the east coast. I don't consider being up at midnight insomnia either.

Ok now I'm all depressed. I have no one to go backpacking with anymore you know my budies that wanna do the PCT(well former buds). I went on one trip with them and went off on them. this was my 2nd marklyvile trip(my first with them).

they were so grosly incompatant to the point of being dagerous to everything. they were flinging trash everywhere, matches here and there cigarett butts everywhere. my whole time was spent trying to keep them from burning down the forest.

so i yelled at them, I mean i totoly went off on them. i told them that they have no right to be backpacking if their going to be that iriresponsable.

thank you all for advising me not to thru hike with them. i am gald i told them off. but am sad i lost 6 of my good friends.

well i guess its off to find a new crowed at school.

all i hope is that they dont get themselves killed

Where are you my late night lurkers? entertain me.

So I signed up for 2 trips tonight. They're both in April, but i haven't been out for an overnighter since Oct/Nov.
Now I'm amped up and I want to spread all of my gear out in the living room and sort it.
However, I might be shot by Kamper, she's sick and trying to sleep. The pistol is on her side of the bed and she'll be cranky from the benadryl.
So, I'll just be annoying y'all instead.
I finally watched Napoleon Dynamite tonight. Funny.
Bored, bored, bored.

currahee, take Nyquil and you will go to sleep. In fact, you won't wake up until noon the next day, lol:)

I took nyquil for a while, but it wipes me out and I'm useless the next day. I like to get up and head straight to the gym, but can't with that green sh*t in my system.
It usually works out where I get 3-4 nights of terrible sleep and then a couple of good nights.
I don't want this to sound funny, but I used to be a heavy drinker on a regular basis. That's where I got my sleep. My body just hasn't gotten used to the fact that I don't just pass out at the end of the day.

currahee, there are things that can help you sleep and that is doing a lot of excersize every day so you are tired at the end of the day, which is not for everyone, or doing things towards your bedtime that you find relaxing, a bath, reading a good book or watching an interesting show on tv.

I do understand what you are saying about being dependent on alcohol to sleep and now you are kind of left hanging. You can seek professional help for medication for anxiety due to past alcoholism. There are pills that are made just for that purpose. They take the edge off of you without making you tired at night or the next day. They just take that slight edge off that keeps you up and may make you want to take a drink again. Kicking a habit by yourself can be very difficult.

Another thing you can do is set your clock to wake you up early so that you are so tired at night that you will fall asleep naturally.

I have trouble sleeping. I can feel tired from watching tv in the livingroom, go to bed, then feel more awake than I thought I was when I headed off to bed, so I sleep best if I watch tv in bed before I sleep, but I couldn't because hubby is already sleeping, so I can't turn on the tv. Problem solved, he bought me headphones for the bedroom tv, so now while he sleeps, I can go to sleep soon after him, watch tv, and fall asleep quickly.

Nyquil is bad and it's a way of self medicating yourself and you are just trading one habit for another. I don't mean to say this to be hard on you, but that's what it is. You can say medicating yourself is also trading one habit for another, but the pills don't ruin your liver (hopefully), cost a lot to take as opposed to drinking nyquil, and you can get off of them when you are feeling better, and you will feel fresh he next day. Don't take those over the counter sleeping pills. They are no good for a lot of reasons.

I see it's almost 11pm, so it must be around 2pm your time. I hope you don't have to get up early. I do feel for you.

I also help myself sleep by reading in bed, and I do that when hubby is sleeping also by using my headlamp. What also helps is to be in a room with the lights off while you watch tv or keeping the lights very low. No light and low light is very relaxing.

If you do go to a doctor, explain your past dependency on alcohol and that you feel you need help to fall asleep, but are not looking for sleeping pills, but pills that help you reduce anxiety.

Doctors do not like to give out sleeping pills, especially if they doubt you stopped drinking and may take the pills and drink, which could be fatal.

Thanks, I do work out 2 hours a day 5 days a week, avoid stimulants like caffiene and sugar (usually), I work 10-12 hour shifts 4-5 days a week, I should be beat. Sometimes my brain just doesn't turn off when it's supposed to. Unfortunatly, I'm used to it now.
I don't like pills (history of addiction in the family), but If it's been a long stretch since my last good nights kip, I do take Sonata. It doesn't leave me feeling stoopid the next day.
It really used to bother me which would just exaserbate the problem. Not so much anymore.
currahee

currahee, I had to do a search to find out what Sonata is:

http://www.kingpharm.com/sonata/entry_page.htm

It says it's for short term use and you need to be able to get 4 hours of sleep on it or I guess you will wake up feeling tired, maybe unable to function or drive. It's also addictive, did you know that, so you will have to wean yourself off of it and it is only supposed to be used short term.

I think it's like taking benydril. I think that's what some people take to make them tired. I just think that a prescription from a doctor can give you a better medication where you don't need to get 4 hours sleep, because it won't make you tired, though you may have to be weaned off of it also eventually. Also, a prescribed medication can be taken over a longer period of time.

Also, eat about 3 hours or more before going to bed. That way what you ate will not energize you when you want to sleep and also don't eat too early where you may feel hungry and not be able to sleep.

I think I understand how you feel, because at night, my mind seems to be very active. I'm not stressing over anything or thinking about anything in particular, I'm just not relaxed.

As a side not, I don't think there was a dependancy on alcohol as much as the fact that I work in a bar and all (with exceptions of course) waitstaff in high volume bars (round these parts anyhoo) are party animals. That is the culture I've been associated with for the last 8.5 years. I never craved it or sought refuge from it. We just partied all the time and as of late I got sick of it.
I still enjoy a cocktail, glass of vino, or cold beer. Just more like normal folks and not bartender folks.
I can't say that it wasn't headed towards alcoholism, tho.
currahee

I might take 1 Sonata a month.
I will take benadryl when backpacking. At least the first night. I'm one of those people who takes a little adjusting to sleep well in new surroundings.
currahee

Sometimes I go to sleep at the same time as my husband, but I won't fall asleep for another hour or more.

He says I look like an alien. I may have my headphones on to listen to the news as background noise, and have my headlamp on to read my book at the same time. How's that for being wound up, lol?

Well, I'm off to sleep. I hope you can get some rest. Think about what I said about seeing a doctor. Some doctors don't like to prescribe certain pills. You need the right doctor or they just may say to take benydril and I don't think that's the answer for someone who used to being heavily sedated by alcohol.

You're really doing good. You just need more time to adjust to being able to relax.

I live with a primary care physician.
Kamper is a Family Nurse Practitioner. If it was really bad she'd drag me to our family doc (she refuses to treat me). It's more annoying than anything now that I'm used to dealing with it.

My work hours vary from going in at midnight to 9am on a day-to-day basis. I only know my hours the evening before I have to work them. I can easily work 16+ hours a day for the week too. Usually when this happens, I sleep a lot on my first (rotating) day off. I'm up pretty often when I don't need to be. I took this week off & up at 2am yesterday & 4am today.

I'm the same......
I'll go hiking at midnight or hike all night.

I was up at 4am today & don't have to go to work to 9am. Took yesterday off since I work too many hours & needed to (try) catch up on some sleep. Caught a cold too.

Many times I come home late & have to be back at work in 2-3 hours. Occasionally, I have pulled out my sleeping bag & slept in the parking lot.

Boo....!! I slept for like 4 hours, now I'm wide awake, what gives???

Guess its cause I didn't work 16 hours yesterday :P

Well, no matter. I have a whole week off from work. Guess I can take a nap or something sometime during the day!

I would much rather be in a tent, BUT this whole one car thing is really putting a damper on backpacking. I'm tired of it, thought we could make it work, but I was wrong. Need to find another car asap!

I'm always up most hours of the night. I fall asleep around 9:30 and I'm awake again between 12 and 1 in the morning. Then, I can't go back to sleep until around 4...well it's after 4 now so I guess I will try and get a couple more hours of sleep...
