I got a couple of friends that I backpack with sometimes and both aren't exactly skinny. After about 20 miles of their legs rubbing together they are feeling pretty raw.
What do yall (big legged) hikers do to provent this?

I find that wearing something like cycling shorts (without the padding in the crotch) helps with that problem. Target sells some "workout" shorts made of something like lycra that does the trick for me.

I was thinking bike shorts might be good. Why not with the padded crotch?

get shorts or pants that have a gusseted crotch. the seams are most likely their problem.

They could try vaseline.

I just say no padded crotch because you don't need that for hiking (unlike biking where any extra padding is welcome). I have found that loose shorts tend to ride up and then it is skin against skin (don't get all excited, boys).

Loosing weight helped a lot.

corn starch your crotch..or for that xtra tingly sensation gold bond the thighs and above. Anything like boxer briefs, long john polypro's will help also..briefs, and boxers just let the thighs rub

I would definatly say the tights, but I can tell you that that pad in biking shorts (called a Chamois) will not be comfortable while walking. Or try compression shorts (basically briefs with boxer length legs.)

I had the chafing problem when I ran marathons. Vaseline works.

Go with the gusseted croch like Rad said and be sure it is quality polyester and keep the pants pulled up. Once they start sagging they start rubbing. It's a sweat thing as much as a rubbin' thing. Gold Bond Medicated is the cat's ass for ruff parts.

Powder or ointment?

Personal choice. I have found baby powder to be more absorbent than gold bond, but GB is better after irritation starts.

I also use Bodyglide -- a non-petroleum based salve. Available at sporting goods shops that deal in weightlifting.

Body Slick. Buy it at any running store, looks like a stick of deoderant. Picked it up to prevent blisters for this breast cancer walk. Lots of people recommended it, and its worked great so far. I've used it on my heels and arms, but not legs yet. I'm hoping they'll get skinnier the more I walk.

Just make sure ya don't buy powder with Talc as the main ingredient, (alot of discount baby powders use it). It's been proven to actually irritate the problem more. Look for corn starch. Diaper rash ointment works great to help sooth chafing and heal it up fast. I personally recomend Arbone brand. You have to buy it from a person, (like a Mary Kay lady, but an Arbone salesperson). It's all natural #&%!$e that works like magic! $10 a bottle though OUCH!

Rei has some great poly boxer briefs that help to alleviate this problem.
