that would have to be my grandfather's ww2 black wool sweater from the red cross. It looks really cool, I wish I could fit into it. THe neck is way to small, I think the sweather with blue jeans and black sneakers would be kewl.

I think its a tie between the pancho liner and the mickey mouse boots. Man those things were warm. And your right, the Alice pack does suck.

My first bear encounter, in '83. My dad gave me some army rations to try, the bear didn't even like it!

I have a really heavy army down sleeping bag downstairs....

I love my medics bag. It's made of black ripstop nylon, has several compartments and is perfect for keeping my most of my stuff organized.

What about the olive green army flashlights??? They have all the different color lens so if you were trained/qualified, you could land a helicopter for an emergency rescue. Its handy to have people like that around.

My olive drab German Army wool "commando" sweater that I got this past fall at Fleet Farm for $14.95 in flawless condition. Even has a chest pocket. And the cute little German flag patches on the shoulders add a dash of color. Very comfy, and long enough to stay tucked in.

British Air Force wool sweater-
camo fold cap-
I borrowed a guys poncho once that was awesome-it could be used as a pup tent if mated with another.

The gortex jacket and pants. The colors kind of suck but being warm and dry take priority.

Poncho and wubby (that's poncho liner for those of you who don't have one) 200 mile an hour tape, 550 cord, wool pants (I think they're Norwegan), a canteen cup makes a great one person pot.

Snow Nymph, Birch actually carried a 9 lb. down Army bag with canvas cover on our first few trips! I think his pack weighed in at about 65-70 lbs! WHAT A MAN :o)

I used to have all kinds of Army gear that I used last year (what I would call a full setup)f. Out of all that stuff, I have kept my:

"esbit" stove

Brown East German Surplus poly Sweater. That's that best cold weather sweater. Light, breathable and very warm!! I think it's kinda like pekka's from what he described.

Sassafras,
I think the bag I have is about 9 lbs. I used it as a weight on one corner to flatten out some carpet I just spread out in the garage.

Brass belt buckle with an EMS nylon belt......the cotton Army belt shreaded/wore out and the plastic EMS buckle buckled.....busted.

Leather gloves and liners for riding my scoot in the cold.

A couple of plastic canteens, one of which got too close to a fire and melted. I like the pressure valve on the cap but don't really use them anymore.

Boonie hat.

They aren't actually surplus, but are "issue" gear bought new: my boony hat and my two sets of BDU shirts and pants, one set woodland, one set 3-color desert; and my Austrian Army Glock field knife.

I like my wool watch cap. A 100% wool cap is difficult to find anywhere else.

I wear BDU trousers often, but not on the trail. My picky teenage boys are fond of the BDU's also. Not cheap, but they wear like iron.

Pressure valve on the cap?
Isn't that where the drinking tube on the gas(protective) mask fits in?

The brown U.S. Army wool sweater is a champ! It's warm and hides stains pretty well

I bought a Swiss Army mess kit off E-Bay. It came with a alcohol stove, a bottle for alcohol, a pot stand, big pot with a hook to hang over the fire and a little pot/lid with a long handle that is part of the "latching it all up " system.
$ 14.95 pretty heavy, but fun to collect.

That's the extent of my Militart gear.

the heavyweight polypros are super warm and such a bargain at $8 too! (Army Px)
They are an awful mustard-puke color, but do the job. We sleep in ours on the trail in Winter...but most of the time they are too warm, so we have to get nekkid! heheheh

A camo hat that looks like a ball cap with a short bill and has fuzzy ear flaps that fold down from the inside. I've worn that on every mountain trip since '95 (see Phil's photo page)

Last year I got some BDU pants for $15 that have also gotten a lot of use.

Toejam, the hat is called a patrol cap or "PC". Very nice piece of gear.

Is that what it's for Tom? I just thought it was for airborne guys or sumtin so their canteens didn't explode at altitude. What the hell do I know?

Oh yeah. I've also got a pair of BDUs and some sort of green shoulder bag that makes a killer doggie supply bag.
