I found this on the lightweight boards and was very intrigued. Sometimes I find gear that is not so light or practical but is so unique that I want it even though it doesn’t save any weight. The thing weighs 26 oz. And I have no idea how much it costs in US dollars but I think I just might have to buy one anyhow, just for the nostalgia factor.

Thanks for the "infection"
Now you've spread another strain of the gear bug, Nigal. After going through the site, I want one, too! It's sort of a battery-free Zipp Stove with integral boiler. Cool. Considering you don't need to carry fuel, perhaps there is some balance in the weight department. (The Esbit users will snort at that, LOL.) The concept and tradition deserve some affection from any lover of self-contained travel and recreation.

Yeah, I know 26 oz is a bit heavy by lightwieght standards but when a pack is 15 pounds with food and water the weight of a single item becomes a non-issue. Plus if you go all baggie meals you get rid of a pot also. That knocks 3-6 oz off the weight. I thought it’d be good for fishing and day hikes too. I bet a charcoal briquette would do really well with it. Now, if I can just find the old green canvas rucksack for it to go in I’d be all set!

Nigal, once you have the Kelly Kettle and canvas ruck, you'll have to go to the Orvis catalog and get yourself a tweed cap, walking coat and knickers, some wool knee socks and waterproof walking shoes. And don't forget to find some language tapes to practice your brogue.

I even have some traditional Irish traveling songs for when I hit da pubs...

"Call me the corn fed, peckerwood, redneck cracker
White bread, #&%!$ kickin' Irish beat jacker
Comin' with the style of a Celtic rebel
Those who ain't on my level call me the blue eyed devil
But that's just because they don't know what I know
And that's just because they can't flow like I flow
I rip sh!t, dip sh!t, so what you gotta say
Why you wanna play, I f#%k you up with no delay
And knock your motherf#%kin' fronts out
Smoke my philly blunts out, my buddha never runs out
I turn the little scunts out
And I got the hookers callin' me pops
Once their cherry pops, Nigal gets all the props
I'm hittin' skins from here to Copenhagen
I bed the wenches cause you know I'm a pagan
The House Of Pain, that's the name of my crew
You don't like it, tough luck, what the f#%k you gonna do
Nothin', you ain't sayin' nothin'
You need to start puffin' and relax
Or you'll wind up gettin' taxed
For your money, for your jewels, for your car, for your ho
My crew, they start trippin' while I'm rippin' up the show"

Yeah, I'm ready for some traditional pub crawlin' now!

Knob knocker
Nigal, if you want to do some Anglo/Celtic-style "rapping" on your jaunts through glen and moor, you'll need to add a gnarled blackthorn walking stick you can wield as a shillelagh.

That thing is cool, Nigel.

An Irishman walks into the pub with a steering wheel sticking out of his zipper.

The barkeep says to the guy, "Laddy, ya got a steerin' wheel attached to ya willie!"

the guy simply said, "Oi, it's drivin' me nuts!"

I used to lust after one of those kettles when I was a compulsive fyl fisherman. You used to see them on salmon rivers. BTW, they work great.

Let us know when you get one, how much it cost, and where you got it from. I'm assuming you are going for the one pint model.

Okay, so how does one make one? Start with a jello mold (copper), solder a top on, solder a spout on? Anyone know how hot a typical wood fire gets and what the melting point of silver (hard) solder might be?
Hmmmmmmmm.

I'm not sure but I'm fairly sure this thing could do double duty as a bong of some sorts...if ya like that kind of thing that is.

flyguy, check oriental markets. I recall seeing some sort of a cooker that has a "chimney" in the center that sits over a charcoal burner -- like that thing they have for puu-puu platters at Chinese restaurants.

Tkanks peckah, I have a chimney type thing which has an aluminum cup which sits down in it from the top. Sterno (or pepsi burner) fits in the bottom. Got it at the Army/Navy. They also have them at Sportsmansguide.com, I think they're called "field burners" or some-such.

Stuff like this is gonna make it hard to NOT buy any new gear this year.
