I have more, but they aren't scanned yet!

I have a great one of a chipmunk that was about 1ft from me and wasn't even scared!

They're fantastic. I can't wait until you upload the rest. That moss is spectacular. Is there a trip report to go with them?

Hey Tarpster... those are some nice pics... they make me nostalgic for my time in Maine. I've got at least two backpacking trips lined up for this year in Maine.

OK HERE IS THE STORY
Yeah man...

I had a four day weekend and I rented a car (cause I am a city boy) and drove to the White Mountains in New Hampshire from Maryland, just me, my gear, some CD's, and a bag of wee. and I camped out just passed Mt Washington at a place I had been to before. Smoked a J.... and crashed in the back of the car. Woke up and wondered where the F I was, when I looked out at the pines and the snow I thought OH YAYORAMA! I was staring MT. Washignton in its cold face. Jumped in the car and headed for McD's, got coffee, biscuit, and hash brown... eat it in 2 seconds, and drove into Maine... climbed to the top of that mountain in the picture above, and chilled in the snow... the next day I started driving to Vermont and was gunna car camp, but realized all the sites were closed, so very stoned at about 5:00 (gets dark about half hour later) I find the AT trial head, pack my gear that's scattered about, light up a ciggy, and start hiking up this huge hill... snow starts falling with the temps... I have no map... I have a feeling a shelter is ahead... make it there just when it gets dark... noone is around... I set up the tent... crack a beer.. smoke a J.... try to light a fire.... eat some food... start to freak... get in sleeping bag... go to sleep.... wake up next morning... everything frozen... no water... run back down trail to car in snow... head for nearest McD's... go to hell home through Albany and down I81 into PA and back to MD.

And... Me and You know who are going back sometime next month or the month after....

The End!

Where'd you take "Top of the world Ma!"? Mt. Washington?

Just a word of advice. You gotta stop over-planning those trips. You kill the spontaneity!

i asked her that before, because my friend Anna gets the urge to eat twigs upon occasion...but she said it's a Native American term for a moose! (i think...)

Definately pop into Maine if you can, and give us a trip report when you get back!

Hey twigy?

Where could we car camp in Maine? We will be in the Western White Mountain area, maybe we will venture further Northeast.

Check here:
http://www.state.me.us/doc/parks/programs/db_search/index.html

Public lands are free and open year round. Access may be an issue this time of year, but I'm sure you can call the numbers listed and get conditions/recommendations. I like the area around the Bigelow Preserve, but that may be too far for you. Closer is the Moohoosucs Public Reserved Land. Search the database for the "Maine lakes and Mountains" region and "camping."

Good luck and have fun!

We are sleeping in the back of an SUV, so I want somewhere safe to park and chill out... Like a campground that's open in the winter.

Thanks for the link!

Do you think Public Lands won't be safe? why not?
Did you find a campground open in the winter?

Thanks, your web page is truely awesome!

Twigy,

I know NH pretty well, and Dolly Copp campground is open year round.... The whites provide easy camping. But I don't know Maine at all... I do have a probelem parking a $30,000 SUV, with Lyra and I in it on the side of a road. I feel safe in the whites, but I don't know Maine at all!

Where do you live again?
Tarp Rat

Tell me what Public Lands are like where you live - they must be different than ours?

I live just outside Augusta. If it wasn't so far from where you're gonna be, you guys'd be welcome to stay with me.

Public lands in Maryland are for rednecks with 30/06 rifles and Budwiser!

Yeah Augusta is a trek from the whites.... We are taking 91 all the way through VT and then cutting over to Glen, NH.

But thanks so much for offering!

I've parked my $80,000 rig along side the road in hundreds of places in lots and lots of states, and not one time have I ever been bothered. Oh, and I sleep in it every night I'm out. (With a loaded .357 magnum within easy reach). However, even though nobody knows that, I've STILL never been bothered. Except for the lots lizards.
