It was funny that the only time bacpac and I have seen eye-to-eye was when I was trying to be utterly ridiculous. MaryPhyl was only partly right – MR was a troll and a dingbat. There is "another" ultra light site.............

They asked for my gear list, I basically told them I do it the old fashion way....I don't take much...they wanted to know how many grams and oz everything weighed.....they seem like nice folks, but me thinks some of them, take themselves a little too serious.

I keep wanting to ask how many bristles I should cut out of my tooth brush, but I'm a little afraid they will tell me ........."every other one".

Another "Ultralite" site actually has 3 pages devoted to hiking nude..........

Those guys walk around with 25 lb packs that cost about $2500 friggin bux, if you add up all the $40 sox & plutonium core cookware they use. “I did a 3 day trip with a buddy of mine awhile back, he wanted to go ultra light....so we did.....

I carried about 18 lb including water, he had 55 lb...when I asked him just what the heck he brought that weighted so much, he showed me 55 lb's of light weight gear....

...everything he had was ultra light..... titanium pots, spoons, etc, tent, ground sheet, cord, sleeping bag, stove, fuel bottles, wash basin, camp chair, air mattress, kitchen kit, hammock, lantern, head lights...you name it.

I realized they made all this stuff, I sold him most of it, I just never thought that some one would actually carry ALL of it at once.”

“Weight is all relative. 30 Lbs on a 5'1" 100lb person might be a little heavy but on a 6'3" 210 lb person it might seem very light. I think that 30-35 lbs is a nice average weekend midweight with some luxuries packed, 20-30 lbs is light weight, and anything under 20lbs is ultra-lite. Anything over 50Lbs for a three season weekend...get help! For winter 40-50 lbs isn't unrealistic though.


My conclusion...it sucks to be small because you still need to carry all the same essential stuff...find a big person to share your load.”

“You know if you ever do give them your gear list they will bust their tails to help you get your weight down for big and little money. It has become a game there to know what is available and what it weighs. I hung out there for a long time--that is how I got to know Marge (the old gal) When my pack weight was approaching 0 I quit going there very often. Most of them are east coast AT hikers.”

“With a new Auspex pack, 2 liter platypus and a 3/4 length Z-rest, I'm down to 20lbs solo with 2 days of food and 2 liters of water and I'm not ultra-light by any stretch. I'm still carrying a tent (Walrus Zoid1) and a water pump.

To me, going ultra-light would mean going with a Tarp or Bivy and switching to a frameless pack. Given the bugs in New England and the cold temps in the mountains year round, I'm pretty attached to having a tent.”
