Oregon in June - HELP!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 15 of 15 messages posted.
Traveling in Oregon in June “I will be spending a week and a half in Oregon in early June for my honeymoon and I am looking for info on weather, day hikes, and places/things to see. We will be flying into Portland and traveling down the coast. Then we plan to head east to Crater Lake and take backroads up through the 3 sisters to Mount Hood. We will finish our trip at the gorge and then back to Portland. What key spots on the coast should we visit? For the inland part of our trip we plan to spend Friday night at crater lake and need to be back in Portland early Wed. morning. What are some good camping areas in the 3 sisters and around Mt. Hood? Any good day hikes at Crater Lake, 3 Sisters, Mt. Hood, or the gorge that we should check out? What will the weather be on the coast and in the mountains at that time of year? Will there be still snow in the mountains and will any roads still be closed? Anyone know any books on Oregon that I should buy? Thanks!” 3:41:41 PM 1/23/02 “ummm....on my honeymoon there was only one thing I wanted to do! So get your priorities straight! See 'hot times in the sack' thread asap!” 3:56:17 PM 1/23/02 oregon “well, in june the coast can be fogged in until midday and maybe some rain [good reason to stay in bed] or it can be beautiful. i don't know what you like to do but some of the more quaint towns are cannon beach, newport, florence, and south coast be sure to visit bandon. you could also check into going salmon fishing on the ocean with a charter that time of year. places like seaside and linoln city are nice more crowded. hit the sea lin caves in florence. the south coast is beautiful and less crowded. you can wallk [hike] anywhere on the beach but be prepared for wind! go crabbing off the docks and try clamming [messy] in many of these towns, no license needed. there are numerous laces to hike along the coast, check the national forests maps. most of the towns are real fishing towns and not always real touristy but a few are. i don't know where you plan to cut east to crater at but if you cut across to roseburg from reedsport or bandon and follow the north umpqua river [highway 138] i guarentee you won't be disappointed! numerous waterfalls, trails, and campgrounds to visit or stay a the famous steamboat inn along the n.umpqua river, they have a honeymoon suite. visit diamond lake on your way to crater, possibly hike up mt. theilsen >9000ft. at crater hike the mt.scott trail [highest point in the park]. get a crater lake map for trails or go outside the park and hike some of the less known but just as beautiful trails. at three sisters attempt to hke the south sister >10,000ft, it can be done. drive the sky lakes highway. take the chairlift up mt. bachelor and have lunch, very european. hike the green lakes trail-popular trail but nice. shop in bend-getting too crowded but you can say you were there. definitely visit the town of sisters. and go to the famous smith rock and watch or partake in rock climbing on the world renown rock. visit the high dessert museum south of bend. go caving in the area. take a raft trip down th deschutes and umpqua or further south the rogue. hile along the metolius river any number of backcountry hikes. some snow will still be in the higher elevations like the sisters and thielsen so i doubt you can get too far up. the weather could be perfect with warm days and very cool [cold] nights. then head to hood river. i don't know where your coming from but just being in oregon will be enough without doing anything.” 4:48:59 PM 1/23/02 “Dang, Boo. That wasn't comprehensive enough for me. Could you suggest more? :)” 8:31:34 PM 1/23/02 “Wow Boo!! You working for the Oregon Tourism dept?? Great write up! I'll check with you instead of all these books and maps for Oregon on my shelf! Reptiles... I am in Coos Bay, right on the coast. What are you interested in doing? There are some great dune/beach hikes, waterfalls, kayaking, etc.. etc.. I'll get back to you with some websites and books when I have more time this in a few days.” 9:28:42 PM 1/23/02 “Visit California, Oregon sucks.” 9:55:10 PM 1/23/02 “Hit Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia, mostly rain and dampness. See the Maritime museum, fort Clatsop for the Lewis and Clark thing. Day hike up Saddle Mountain, Day hike Neahkanie Mountain south of Cannon Beach. Enjoy the coast with long walks on the beach. Lots to do in the Rogue Valley near Crater Lake, hike Oregon Caves, Plays at the Shakespherian festival in Ashland ( I know I spelled that one wrong) Hike the Pacific Crest near Crater Lake. Walk through Jacksonville and catch a concert at the Britt festival. Enjoy, enjoy and stay away from California.lol” 10:41:32 PM 1/23/02 5 year Oregon resident “June -- still snow on hood, depending on how much and how low it goes it depends on how much it got this year -- probably hit deep, but conoslidated snow on Hood at 7,000 ft. Timberline trail is a nice 40 mile or so hike around hood. Also Eagle creektrail maybe 14 miles r/t is beautiful, but popular.” 11:07:42 PM 1/23/02 sorry i didn't mean it! “i guess i should work for the tourism bussiness but...i don't. don't get me started on eastern oregon. i just get around, i mean i used to. i did forget to add kayaking. but oregon does stink and one would be rather happier in the great state of california or washington. shall i go on about them as well?” 10:33:37 AM 1/24/02 No Vaseline... “Ya'll come on up here to Oregon. I sure hope you and yer lady got pretty mouths. We is real fond of out of state folk round these parts.” 2:50:39 AM 2/01/02 “Thanks everyone for all the info. Wiskey - go climb back in your bottle, you're talking to a Vermont redneck.” 2:08:15 PM 2/01/02 Welcome to Oregon “We shoot every 3rd car, the second just passed....... Sign on Oregon/California boarder.” 2:54:27 PM 2/01/02 “Reptiles, You might try this site; http://www.oregonhiking.com/#Southern%20Oregon%20-%20Top%20Recreation%20Destinations This guy has several books on hiking in Oregon and not too badly written. I have several of his books and they pretty well point you in the right direction. Also the US Forest Service has maps of the Pacific Crest Trail; Oregon Northern Portion and Oregon Central Portion. They would cover Mt. Hood to Crater Lake NP. These are availible from REI. Although these are primarly PCT maps they do show alot of the Cascades Mountains. Hope this helps.” 3:50:01 PM 2/01/02 whoosies “reptile, if your from back east [anywhere east of the mississippi] then you got it made out here! the natives are whoosies, too soft. maybe it's the interstate breedings with californians or oregonians with oregonians. i know if you stay too long you soften up and loose that east of the mississippi attitude! enjoy!” 2:54:37 AM 2/02/02 whoosies “reptile, if your from back east [anywhere east of the mississippi] then you got it made out here! the natives are whoosies, too soft. maybe it's the interstate breedings with californians or oregonians with oregonians. i know if you stay too long you soften up and loose that east of the mississippi attitude! enjoy!” 3:00:04 AM 2/02/02
