Pancakes!
Phil, sorry it took me so long, but I finally got around to posting some Dutch pancake recipes for you. Here we go:

Hollandse Appel met Yoghurt Pannekoeken (Dutch Apple Yogurt Pancakes)

1 C. flour
2 Tbsp. extra fine granulated sugar
1/2 Tsp. baking soda
1/2 Tsp. salt
4 eggs, rm. temp.
1/4 C. H2O
1 C. plain yogurt
3 Tbsp. margarine, melted
2 apples, peeled/sliced very thin
2 Tsp. cinnamon

Mix all dry in a bowl. In sep. bowl, beat eggs & add H2O & yogurt. Add margarine, apples, & cinnamon to yogurt mix. Stir in dry mix until batter is smooth. Serves 4.

I can not remember if you said you had been to Holland or not. I found a few really charming little "pancake houses" in the "rural" areas. At one place we ate in a large backyard w/ flowers everywhere. They serve dessert style pancakes, but also alot of dinner style ones. I have some recipes for bacon & Gouda cheese pancakes and also for a mushroom pancake. Let me know if you want them.

Newgirl - THANKS! I missed it earlier.

The recipe looks good...and so do the others (if you get a chance to post them sometime). I am sure my family will like them.

I want to go to Holland some day and visit. My uncle was MIA there in WWII. I want to visit the battle sites, memorials, and see the sights.

Researchers know the exact spot where he died near Groesbeek (but we don't know what happened to his remains).

Stereotypes of Holland
A huge party in the streets. Drugs, alcohol. Not for the weak hearted.

Also, the trick is to have the ugliest bicycle. That way no one steals it.

Oh yeah, also, bring your dog on the train...

I have a funny book I got from a friend of mine who is from there 'The UnDutchables an observation of the netherlands: its culture and its inhabitants

Funny!!! and I haven't even been there!! (yet)

Some phrase you might need if you go there
ga fietsen stelen op de Dam
idiom: Get lost!
Literally translated: go steal bikes at Dam Square
(useful for when a prostitute tries to proposition you?)

een klap van de molen hebben
idiom: you're crazy
Literally translated: you've been hit by a windmill
(useful when someone tries to sell you 'funny' cigarettes in an Amsterdam coffee house)

blijf met de klompen van 't ijs
idiom: mind your own business
Literally: keep your wooden clogs off the ice
(useful, ???)

Some Tips On Holland For Phil
Phil, I thought I would reply to a few of the messages on here as a way of introducing you to the Netherlands. (Should you have an opportunity to travel there, these tips could be helpful).

Queen's Day is not the time to be there, unless you like huge, crazy parties in the street (which, contrary to popular believe, are not raging ALL the time). Mooch made a good point about having the ugliest possible bike. Bicycle thievery is the number one crime. No amount of locking and chaining will prevent it. The UnDutchables is a fabulous, funny book to read before heading there. I own it, I'd be happy to send it your way. Don't rent a houseboat. Very expensive and it probably feels more like floating in a pool of muck, then camping. There is great coffee, but you don't get it at "coffee shops." They sell something entirely different there. Hope you make it soon, Phil.
