I can't believe it!
I got mine, and I can't see anything I would rather have than what is in my garage.

Except those high tech superultralight tents.......

I don't like the new format compared to last year. There was more info last year and this year has half as many pages. This magazine seems to get smaller and smaller every year.

Just got my copy this morning, I agrea with Rich B. Last issue was twice as thick. Meaning that they eather used a smaller font or left out alot of info, you can come to your own thoughts of what one they did.

Don't like it. A lot less hard info. I liked it better grouped by manufacturer. What's the point in having to wade through Wenzel and American Camper stuff im every category. The best thing about the issue was the list of web sites. I actually found a few I didn't already have bookmarked.

I was eating at Chi-Chi's Friday night. Had just purchased the guide and was looking at it. Waiter says, "Is that the Backpacker Gear Guide?" I said, yeah, and laughed. "Looking at tent weights," I said, salivating. Was it the food yet to come or the tent weights? TENT WEIGHTS!!
He said, "Yeah, mine just came and I can't wait to look at it."

Weird, huh?

Changes Aren't Permanent...But Change Is
Supposedly this Gear Guide format makes it easier to choose items. They grouped products according to use and price...key features that drive buying decisions. This way you can easily compare 20F sleeping bags together without having to flip through pages to individual manufacturers.

I didn't like it either at first, but I think the comparison purpose format does make it easier for someone looking for new gear.

I like the new format...
it's all those subscriber cards and crap that's a pain!

Backpacker sucks....
Plus is killing trees. I've been thinking alot lately how hypocritical hikers are in general. We cherish our forest where we hike yet we order as many gear catalogs as possible and subscribe to stupid magazines like Backpacker all of which makes cutting down those trees necessary. It's all supply and demand

Got it.

I like the new format. If I want to find the lightest ______ in my price range, I don't have to flip between dozens of pages and read the fine print for features. Nice!
