Got any good pictures?
I'd like to see them.

Here are a couple of my albums which contain petroglyphs, pictographs and ruins.

Question Of The Day?
Do you know what the difference is between a petroglyph and a pictograph?

Petroglyphs are carved/scratched into the rock, pictographs are painted.

Very interesting Pathman...thanks for sharing.

I had a friend that flew in Arizona, and he had some photos of diagrams/shapes that was made on the land. They could only be seen from high up. The locals say that those shapes have been there forever...they don't know which culture did them.

Stanlee, I am in midwest, not far from the Mississippi River. We have Indian mounds here, some called effigies. They are shaped like bears, birds, etc. They can best be seen from the air -- well, especially when outlined with white chalk. However, now days they don't do that as much and are leaving them more natural as opposed to mowing them. I'd post a link to Effigy Mounds National Monument near hear, but that &@#$@@ government of ours might not ever have the website going again!! waaaaah!!

Pathman, I got a shot at Newspaper Rock in Oct. 2000 near Canyonlands. Very cool. Some of the designs are crazy! I love rock art.

Newspaper Rock Was Drawn By Pre-Historic Hippies
I was at Newspaper Rock in '95, Ms.lizs, and drew those darn figurines/symbols on everything for months afterwards. Did you see the peace sign?

They are a shrine at the entrance to the Yapashi Pueblo. There are replicas near the Bandelier visitor center, but the real ones are in the backcountry, by the pueblo.

Painted Cave is the coolest. The prints that I scanned are 20 years old and faded.

The stone lions are still maintained, the area kept clean the the antlers kept arranged.

Hey, Buddur, I should attempt to scan my slide of that. I loved that site. And I probably shot a roll of film on it, nice shots, tripod, NO FENCE! :-)

I'm Going To Make Million$ From This Find
Was taking a break while hiking today and noticed something that cought my eye. I was at an intermittent stream that has a 10' waterfall (after it rains and water is flowing in the streambed), and I noticed a crescent-shaped anomaly in the rock...to me, it just didn't look natural. So I climbed to the area, removed dead treelimbs that were in the way, and sure enough it looked like an etching. So I took a stick and started swiping at the rockface to remove the lichen and whatever the gunk was to find the crescent was a "C". More swiping revealed a "T.C. 1916" etched in the side of the rock outcrop of the waterfalls. It was definitly old, and all the gunk that accumulated and covered it up indicated to me that it's probably been hidden for a looooong time.

I'm going back as soon as I can and spraypainting "Kilroy Was Here" over it.
