Longest Distance in 24 HoursView Messages“Impressive birch and alumcave!” 10:07:20 PM 10/23/05 “20 miles with about 25 pounds on my back. Distance was covered from 9:30 AM to roughly 6:30 PM. Hike was on the Quehanna trail in Penn” 10:52:01 PM 10/23/05 “75 miles in 24 hours... that's very impressive. That's like 10,000 calories (isn't it?) I mean a marathon is like 4000 calories and most people have bonked at mile 20. How do these people keep from running out of carbohydrates? They must run out of their natural stores well before half of the trip. I am not doubting that people do this, I just find it amazing.” 11:01:55 PM 10/23/05 “pitts, ya gotta eat like crazy. Constant snacking and rehydration (plus electrolyte tablets for me every 2 hours).” 4:32:41 AM 10/24/05 “I like traveling 20 miles a day in a canoe. (with portages) Mostly in hot weather. Half that distance hiking. Hiking with snowshoes cuts the distance also. I prefer off-season hiking. I don't see hiking as a marathon. I haven't been on a few peaks because of heavy usage. I like trailess hills & mountains best. I stop & smell the roses. I change direction frequently, when something catches my eye. (this is where I kill myself with time & distances)I drop down the sides of mountains. I like climbing the same mountain from all sides. I like or dislike it depending which side I've climbed. Bushwhacking is slower going then trail running & you usually hit obstacles. My winter backpack was 80#'s. Don't do that anymore.” 12:14:54 PM 10/24/05 Longest Distance in 24 Hours “Over 1,000 miles I drove on the first day, when I left Florida on my way to see My Old Flame in Minnesota!” 12:15:39 PM 10/24/05
