Anyhoo, I guess you're aware that the shooter was stopped by several students. What we weren't told by the (liberal!) media is that two of the students were armed, and the gunman dropped his gun only after one of the students threatened to shoot. Only then was the shooter wrestled to the ground...

"Gun Free School Zone"? Whatever...

We will never know how many lives were saved because two people bucked the "system", and exercised their right to bear arms...”

“Most folks pack guns around here (Northern, CA) we have more concealed weapons permits than 99% of America, (myself included, although I don't carry) our crime rate is above average, and we do seem to have an awful lot of folks shooting each other, outside bars, domestic disputes, in the woods, you name it....it seems that at least a couple times a month someone shot some one else. I don't really know if more guns is the answer, or less....I do know that there seems to be less road rage (at least it seems more controlled) then most places, I suspect that it may be due to the fact that about every other car has a gun in it and everyone knows it.”

Though I considered myself well versed in such matters (or obligated to learn if I wasn't), I knew too many reporters and editors who couldn't tell one type of gun from another and were not interested in learning anything about the subject. Consider, too, Violin, that "guns" included in that count you mention are actually predominantly rifles and shotguns (which don't need a permit and were likely improperly stored by their parents), not handguns, though you wouldn't know that from the anti-handgun lobby.

I don't do stats related to controversial issues - too "subjective". I learned in college that I could do a research paper arguing that the earth is flat, and back it up with documentation.

Kids spend MUCH more time around bathtubs, pools, and bicycles than they do guns - generally speaking.

Can't say if it's the same guy who wrote on those subjects (he's John R. Lott Jr.) and without reading what was written about those two subjects by whoever, I'd hesitate to say any controversial position was goofy just because it doesn't hold with the general perception.

But I have his book on guns and crime and it does not have the scent of crackpot work -- lots of data, much more research than a crackpot would be willing to do.”

“If you want to get right down to the core elements of this argument you have to consider several things.. 1) If guns were completely illegal..people would still have guns, just like drugs...So, why not let people have the freedom to defend themselves. I did not post this early because I have seen to many gun bashing stories on this site so I did not wont to dive into another one. But since it is here I can t help but join in. This happened in my hometown. I lived there up until I left for the army and again until I moved to attend college. This is a small coal-mining town in the middle of nowhere but it is still home. Because it is a very small town and you can't belch in your house with out every one in town finding out about it, it was a surprise that the news stories where telling a different story than all the other people. But the fact that people have guns in there cars did not surprise to me or anyone else in the town. Guns are a way of life up there. I received my first gun on the day I was born. I know that sounds strange but let me gets the facts straight I nor anyone else for that matter got to shoot it until I was 8 on my 8th birthday dad took me and my older brother out and I got to shoot it for the first time. Up until that point I had only got to shoot BB guns with supervision. Like I said every one has guns. What might strike many is the fact the gun related crimes are very low. In fact crime in general is very low. The fact the shooter was and outsider speaks volumes you don’t start a gun fight in Buchanan county if you don’t wont to get shot because if the person you are shooting dose not get you some one else will. As my dad likes to “ If you are going to ride around up front on a white horse you got to expect some one to take a shot at you”.
This incident is a shame because it will hurt the school. This school is good for the economy. Hopefully all the attention will get people looking at their web sight and they will find out that this a good place to get your degree.

These stories prove the fact that guns save far more lives than they take. If you are not armed at home and someone breaks into your home, you are at that person's mercy. If people don't want to have guns in their home, that's fine, but I feel safer with mine.”

Yet, he conveniently leaves out the fact that at leat one of the subduers was an off-duty sheriff's deputy. Off-duty cops are hardly representative of the armed populace. Bias swings both ways.”
