Having accomplished getting to where I was going, then kicking back and relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

And, thinking that I just may be the first person to have actually stepped on that one spot.

Best Feeling???
The best feeling would be having just left a firm steamer and knowing the paperwork will be a cinch.

Camping with friends when with a group. Normally with a group I have to slow my pace.
or
Kicking my own pace when soloing. When soloing, the camping part kinda sucks. Very boring with no one to talk to.

I like hiking with people with the same pace and stamina as me.

Actually, I love walking out of the woods onto Lake Superior's rocky shoreline and feeling the wind blow across my cheek and through my hair.

Solo hiking is good for solitude.
Watching the most awesome sunsets and the feel of my down bag while stareing up at the stars listening to Art Bell on my tiny radio. A full day behind with all it's unplaned discoveries raceing through my mind.

One of my favorite feelings: Its around the middle of a long backpacking trip with my son..... we are well into a rythym... we've been out for days and have a number of days left to go. We've been through some nasty weather and some rough climbs. Today though is a beautiful day... all of our things have started to dry. Maine is lousy with gorgeous secluded lakes and ponds and we stop at one. We spread out our socks and open up our boots and a few other things to let them dry. We snack a little and then stretch out our bodies on the sandy shore for a while and then swim. No one else is around. Soon all of our stuff will be dry. My feet and the rest of my body is holding up well. I am in no hurry, we will easily reach our goal for the day.

Of course, there are often leeches in dem beautiful Maine lakes but they seem to be designed to latch on to a Moose. As long as you keep moving, they are no threat and as I do a slow steady backfloat, I don't even think about them.

When we start out again, our wet clothes will keep us cool as they dry off on the trail.

I've had this kind of moment maybe a half dozen times. I like to make good time on the trail, but if its swimmin weather and the swimming is good... I will be in the water at least once.

What feels good.....:)
When I am backpacking I get the feeling of being free. That to me is a great feeling. When you get to see the clouds diffrently and when there is tons of moss on trees and on rocks and things.Or water flowing wild and free.I get goose bumps just thinking about it.While going down the trail sometimes I stop and just listen and look around........And then it hits you it looks like god painted everything in front of you and all around you.If I could I would backpack all the time.I just had written something and I just thought I would share it with you all.

"As I see what small things there are on earth I can see everthing that is grand, for this I know the forest and the wild lands give me all I need in life. When I am one with the wild land I am truely free."

Mike Langer 1-28-02

I like to think my Mom is now free and she is haveing a great time and some day I will see her again.I miss her with all my heart. So with that said the wild and free places on this earth are my favorite places.I would take being in the forest over all the other things that I have in life becuase in the end I know that backpacking is my one true high and is going to make me feel the best.

hmmm....I think for me it's stretching out at the end of the day on my thermarest and listening to all the little sounds of quiet, knowing it was my two legs and strong back that got me where I am and having my best pal next to me smelling of campfire, talking softly of what we saw and did and what's to come tomorrow, what worked well or wasn't so good and what we might do next time. In a nutshell the satisfaction of getting somewhere by my own power and sharing it with a loved one or good friends.

Watching deer watch me is a cool feeling. I just walked up to these girls real slow and sat on a stump and watched them for about 15 minutes. They didn't get spooked until my wife and daughter tried to get to my stump too.

The peaceful feel of the warmth of the fire you just started while watching the sky lighten in the east with the only sound the rush of the stream and the crackle of the flame. Damn, I dig that. I was doing that very thing Sunday a.m. @ CS9 GSMNP.
