Great Idea. I'm gonna hit them also and see what kind of treasures I can find.” 9:27:07 PM 1/29/02 “some times you can find backpacks and other gear but the bums usualy buy it all up.” 9:45:03 PM 1/29/02 “When I was in Marquette recently, I swung by St. Vinny's, didn't find anything that fit me, but there were two down vests hanging there for someone who could take a small or medium -- each $3. Don't have to worry about getting gear "dirty" on the trail at that price. My best thrift score ever was a Hong Kong hand-tailored tweed English country walking jacket, with the personalized label inside, real leather buttons and all -- in my exact size at the time -- for $4. I still have it and long for the days when it fit. Stylin' in my slender(poor) grad school days.” 9:48:23 PM 1/29/02 me too! “i found a sierra designs waterproof pullover shell too at our goodwill store...it even had the stuff sack in the zip pocket....5 bucks....! it's red....wow...i never owned any red gear....i like it. last year i got a pair of cross country skis there for 10 bucks...almost new....i ended up selling them at a yardsale tho....i am sorry i did that now. thrift stores are a great place to find gear stuff..” 10:03:55 PM 1/29/02 “Thifts stores are great fun if you have an adventurist attitude. About once a year our whole family goes to one just to see what we can find. My girls love to shop for vintage clothes. Once I about completely equipped myself for a car camping kitchen real cheap: plates, cups, silverware, pans, etc. Bought two down vests (our sizes) for under $5 each. My favorite find was an army jacket with insignia for--GET THIS--82nd Airborne, Paratrooper Wings, Sergeant...just like my uncle on the memorial page...That blew everyone away!! My father goes to thrift stores to collect ties. He has over 400 now and has a lot of fun giving them away and wearing them.” 10:24:14 PM 1/29/02 “400 man o man that is alot of ties....” 10:31:01 PM 1/29/02 “My sister says I was bought at a thrift store.” 10:33:17 PM 1/29/02 Vintage And Still Kicking “I scored a mid-70s excellent to good condition Sims Taperkick having old-style Tracker Trucks and Red 70mm Kryptonic wheels for $3 at the local Starvation Army.” 10:47:40 PM 1/29/02 “My sister used to tell me I was adopted. Now I wish it was true, LOL! I heard that the Salavation Army in Freeport Maine has tons of brand-new LL Bean stuff dirt cheap.” 11:15:55 PM 1/29/02 “Shell jackets, wind pants, silk longies, down vests, plastic bowls & mugs, kids' Sierra Designs rainsuit, stuff sacks, youth backpack frame... My best luck has been at garage sales, however - two like-new Thermarests for four bucks apiece and a TNF VE23 tent for forty bucks.” 6:55:01 AM 1/30/02 “My wife found me a pair of TNF zipoff pants on sale for $12. at Famous Barr. I was pretty psyched, since I paid about $80 for a pair excatly like it three years ago.” 9:54:45 AM 1/30/02 “I got a longer wool coat from Killarney Mills (or some such thing) in Ireland for a quarter. My best score! Watch out for Cabela's "Bargain Cave." Their returned stuff goes there. It's supposed to have "deals" and does -- once in a blue moon! A lot of stuff looks like crap and is maybe cut only $10. I can't believe they sell a lot of the stuff! But... I still always look there, just perchance. Once I got 2 pairs of nice trail pants for maybe $15 each.” 12:31:17 PM 1/30/02 “update: last week at the thrift store i got a thin pullover-it has a semi shiny finish...the label says m.t.s-100%microfiber.So I dont know what its use is but for 2 bux what the hell. Today,I got a K2 hydration pack(fluid link model)for 3 bux but no bladder.I also got an EMS fleece pullover with zip up collar-the label says 100% micro denier poly fleece.Paid 5 bux.” 9:03:08 PM 3/21/02 “Congrats on the find davex Thrift Stores Rule! I got a 100% polyester pullover w/hood real cheap once. I use it a lot on the trail. Campmor often has good deals too.” 5:35:52 PM 3/22/02 “The thrift stores around here suck.
