“In my (limited) experience, they are good sales for returned day-packs, some returned clothing, etc. I wouldn't hold my breath looking for something as valuable as a Garcia Bear Cannister, after all, they don't change styles / colors every year, and you can't buy the wrong size so I wouldn't imagine finding one of those. On the other hand, I saw a Marmot Precip jacket at the last one for $65.00, pretty good deal (but used).”

“I've been to the one in my area. I always get there late and all the good stuff is taken. My only score was a pair of treking poles for 10 bones. Right now, I GOTS TO STOP BUYING GEAR. Everytime I tell my wife "That's it. I have everything I need" something else catchs my eye. I just bought a North Face jacket and pants (windbreakers), a Moonstone vest and another polypro long sleeve base layer shirt. On sale!”

“GO ppf! People return stuff for the stupidest reasons and it's sold dirt cheap! Birch got himself a wicking shirt for .79 because it had snags. If you've ever worn wicking stuff you know it's going to get snagged eventually anyways. We missed our sale last weekend. They just switched over to doing them twice a year. Next one is Labor Day weekend.”

“Hey poppinfresh, I am going to be in Sac for two weeks starting on the 18th of Feb. I'll be at the old Army depot in Floriston (?). Is there some good day hiking at Folsom Lake, or do you know of another spot for dayhiking. I'll probably have only one day off during the weekend of the 23rd.”

“I've hiked at Folsom lake, and from what I remember it was nice. Of course, I was with the love of my life at the time, so anything would have been good. :) I'd love to go back to California again to do some more hiking someday.”

“Hi there, greetings from Seattle. I have been to the REI garage sale at the main store here many times. I've gotten some incredible deals and some great deals over the years. I'll tell you more in a minute.

If you want to get the screaming deals at the Seattle sale, you have to bivy in line at least one night. Last time we did it for 2 days, and were in the first group of 30 people in to the store. The bivy's kind of fun the first time, though it gets old after that.

A lot of the stuff you see at the Seattle store had come in from other stores, so my bargains may not accurately reflect what you will get at other stores.

I could go on and on. I hear the sale is not as good as it used to be, I haven't gone in a couple of years. I highly recommend it if you need a lot of gear. Do your research and know your retail prices. Don't buy it unless you are sure you can fix it. Use teamwork. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water and a snack. You'll be in there a while. At our Garage Sale everything's half off the second day, and late on Sunday they do 2 for one shoes, basically bringing the cost of shoes down to 25% of the sale price. That's how I got my brand new Solomon Snow Clogs for $6. Brand new.”

“I went to the REI garage sale last year in Seattle. I got there at about 6AM. What totally pissed me off was you stood in line on the sidewalk -- the line was 6 abreast and went the length of the store at that time, and Seattle's REI takes up the whole block -- and people are arriving late and getting in line with friends. Then you start to hear rumors that in order to get in, you need a number! I'd been in line for an hour already and some poor REI guy is being swarmed because he's handing out numbers...people way, way behind me had numbers to get in before me. Be ready for a ZOO.”

“The last time I went to the sale (the 2 day wait) there were some people that came in about 6AM the day of the sale, plopped their stools right in the middle of the first 50 people, sat down, pulled their hoods down, and crossed their arms. They were hard for me to get rid of, but my railing diatribe finally sent them slinking. BTW they were behind me in line but I just couldn't bear it. It was not fair.

Then I realized that everyone there was crazed with greed, myself included, and decided to stop going to the sale.”
