Chowda, I just finished my SECOND tmie through DS! I started it over as soon as I finished it! It ROCKS!!! Now I'm reading a book that he referenced in there: Touching The Void. It is unbelievably intense! I actually caught myself sweating at one point!

Haven't read that yet, but heard it's incredible. It's on my list to read. A couple more that are unreal are: Eiger Dreams and In the Shadow of Denali (couldn't put this down either). I haven't finished DS yet, but I'm humming through it - crazy good read.

I am now about to finish reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. I had just finished "The Kite Runner" and decided to give this book a spin.

I can't recommend "A Thousand Splendid Suns" enough. The book captures a great many historical and cultural themes in the telling of the story of the lives of two women leading what I can only describe as tortured lives of slavery. I found it almost impossible to detach myself emotionally from the characters in this novel, and as such was deeply disturbed by what I read. The authors account of the lives of these two women is so believable that I find myself projecting what I am reading into the world at large. Taken in the context of modern events I can't help but pause in disbelief at the way women are treated in highly conservative muslim cultures and specifically at the raw suffering (basically slavery) of women in Afghan society over the past thirty years.

...in the world at large?

"Woman is the #&%!$ of the World" - John Lennon & Yoko Ono

I have always thought about this song and the controversy surrounding it. The meaning behind it was clear: That across all cultures there is the traditional role of woman as that of subservience... subservience to man, family, religion, culture, etc. I kept thinking about this song as I read the book and thinking about the irony that it was banned from the radio because it had the word '#&%!$' in it... banned for talking about the slavery of women (gender slavery) using a term that was used for slaves (racial slavery).

Woman is the #&%!$ of the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the #&%!$ of the world
Think about it...do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance
If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us
If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man
While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us

Woman is the #&%!$ of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave of the slaves
Ah, yeah...better scream about it

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the #&%!$ of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah...alright...hit it!

We insult her every day on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she's young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

Woman is the #&%!$ of the world
Yes she is...if you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream about it

We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance

I read that series by Rosenberg. I loved "The Last Jihad", but the series seemed to get a little too preachy by the last book. I still really liked the series.

I've been reading "An Inconvenient Book" by Glenn Beck. While some of his theories are out there, some of them make a lot of sense. Also, he writes just like he talks on his show. Its pretty humorous.

I picked up On The Ridge Between Life And Death by David Roberts last week, and I'm nearly done with it. Quite a story, though it's not what I expected it to be. It's more of an autobiography rather than an analysis of his lifes climbing experiences. Still a good read, with loads of details about mountaineering in CO and AK.

meangreen,

last child in the woods" is about nature deficit in children. pretty much the whole book talks about how our children's generation no longer spends times in the woods, due to litigation, video games, lack of land, and human/animal preditors... i'll prolly create a thread about it the more i read it...

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Perhaps the ideals in this book doesn't translate well to 21st century, but it feels more like a mensa pot party to me. The only thing different in the philosophy of this book so far (up to ch 11) and any of many of the "deep" conversations I've had while stoned is how much money he made publishing it.

If it weren't for the cool motorcycle story in it I would have returned it to the library already.

I'm hoping that the end somehow ties all this gobbly goop together.

I just finished On The Ridge Between Life And Death. It's mostly an autobiography, but a fascinating read about an extreme mountaineer in the 60's and 70's and how he justified the deaths on this expeditions both then and now. The last few chapters are quite moving, and really make you examine your hobbies from a different perspective.
It really makes you ask the question "is it worth it?"

Last night I picked up an old one... The Running Man just for something to do, but this weekend I'll be starting No Shortcut To The Top. That should be exciting!

I just finished The Black Company again. I read the entire series straight through twice recently (not the first time I have read them all, just decided to read them all again) and picked up the first book again immediately.

I just really love Glen Cook's style and how well he portrays a military band of misfits.
