Sweet, Pennsy! "Into the Thin Air" is my favorite book of all time.

Stump - that dosen't sound like much fun to read!

I'm currently reading "Southern Exposure" by Chris Duff. It's the true story of a man's solo kayak trip around the New Zealand's south island.

I ordered it from Latta Outdoors. ;-)

Measuring America. Almost a text book about how land became to be surveyed as it is in America, and what it meant for the government, real estate markets, shapes of cities, etc. Pretty facscinating really.

Because of Dayhiker, I recently read "Teewinot", by Jack Turner. I highly recommend it. Currently, I'm reading "John Adams" by David McCullough. Excellent.

Artex
It's not too bad. I'm reading it to brush up on my skills for an article I'm writing. (Attempt at Professional advancement.) The nice part is that most of it is a review.

PS Nice plug for Matt's store. :-)

I'm finishing "A Place Called Freedom" by Ken Follett. The first 2/3 was very good. It really detailed why the Scotch and Irish poured over here. The last third deals more with the love themes. It's a pretty good historical fiction.

stumprider - are you a structural engineer? I'm in the process of getting my SE license in Illinois.

I've found myself addicted to non-fiction adventure books, such as "Into the Thin Air", "Southern Exposure", "The Long Walk". I've always liked them, but now it's pretty much all I read. It's cool to hear what everyone's reading to get new ideas! :-)

Don't I wish! Better job opportunities in that profession, I suspect.

No, I just completed my PhD in Sociology, LISREL is a statistical modeling program used to estimate causal relationships in the social sciences.

Best of luck in your SE license!

the term "structural modeling" is what got me. I was thinking that at least there was another finite element modeling geek on the board. Congrats on the PhD.

Illinois is about the only Western state that has a special license for SE's. It makes sense out West with the quakes, but Illinois? That's ok, I wanted to take another 8 hr test with about a 15% pass rate. It should be a fun afternoon in October when I should be hiking. Do I sound bitter? I'm really not, but it will be a little pressure considering we're doing a $12M church and I need to get licensed.

That should say $12M church, in Illinois, and I need to get licensed. I'm also getting a license in Indiana for a job. Looks like dayhiker will be heading to the Midwest a time or two before too long.

The Pocket Doctor;

Wallace Stegner's "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian" about JW Powell's exploration of the CO River;

and "Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon" with all known written accounts of how people have died in the Grand Canyon -- all 750 of 'em!

Artex: I like Stegner's writing style. He's really flowing and easy to read. I've heard from others that he romantacizes POwell's exploration a bit but it is still a great read.

Lyra: Yes and no. Not a grizzly as you might think. It's really quite a good study in what NOT to do in the backcountry/desert setting.

You might want to read "Prairyerth" by William Least Heat Moon to get an in-depth look at a portion of the Midwest. Be careful, though, you might be tempted to abandon sweet home Alabama.

Thanks for the Heat-Moon suggestion. A few weekends ago I watched the Ken Burns doc on Lewis and Clark. Moon was quoted throughout and I did look him up on Amazon. It seems he has a book totally about Kansas. No, I'm not making this up.

I think it's in notes from a small island, but he talks about working in Holloway Sanitorium - which was the twin building to the college I went to. I'm taking a year-long leadership class for work. I have to read "First, Break All the Rules" and "Good to Great", both are corporate management books. And then we have a TON of homework from the first class, including a book about Carl Jung (next class focuses on managment by personality/talents).

I WANNA READ SOMETHING FUN!
