Other than that, I just got a book about pilates and yoga for people with back problems.” 5:12:44 PM 4/16/04 “I'm amping myself up to read Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series. I hear they're great.” 5:17:28 PM 4/16/04 “"All I Ever Needed to Know About Chicken Soup I Learned from the Celestine Women of Venus," by Scott Ott” 5:49:37 PM 4/16/04 “They are excellent Artex!” 6:41:57 PM 4/16/04 Reading ? “Dominic Sandbrook's " Eugene McCarthy " .” 7:35:30 PM 4/16/04 “I'm about 50 pages into Volume One. You're right, Tango... I'm hooked!” 6:02:30 PM 4/19/04 “hamlet...ughh” 7:11:55 PM 4/19/04 “Started "River Horse" by Wm. Least Heat Moon yesterday afternoon. While I appreciate the richness of the details/history/language, it is not exactly advancing at a scintillating pace. I have to get myself into his rhythm, but I have my fingers crossed it will not be a plodding trip across the continent. I enjoyed "Blue Highways" many years ago, so I know he can tell a travel tale that will pull you into his world.” 7:21:06 PM 4/19/04 “Just finished reading Where The Mountain Casts It's Shadow: The Dark Side of Extreme Adventure. Very good book about mountaineering and how a climber's family copes w/ not knowing if their loved one will return from each climb, and if the climber does dies, how they handle it. Especially sad was the children's accounts of how they felt/reacted to their dad's (or mom's) death on the mountain.” 7:41:40 PM 4/24/04 “yikes.” 7:42:56 PM 4/24/04 “It was really good, but somewhat depressing. But still good. but sad. But good. Does that make sense?? :-)” 7:45:33 PM 4/24/04 “Yeah, if you're goth.” 7:47:36 PM 4/24/04 “Like the best songs are always the really sad ones? <G> I remember a big to-do over there on The Dark Side a long time ago about how responsible it was for people with small children to be hardcore mountain climbers.” 7:51:20 PM 4/24/04 “Is Yam a Goth Babe?” 7:52:35 PM 4/24/04 “Tilt, in the book they bring up that exact topic about how some feel that it is wrong for fathers to leave their kids for months at a time, and it even touched on how some wives were bitter about it. One kid's story was heartwrenching--he was 4 or 5 and his dad was lost in an avalanche. His mom saw him playing in a sandbox, burying toy people and then digging them out. Then burying them, then digging them up. That's all he'd do, over and over again.” 7:58:06 PM 4/24/04 “I've seen the pics of her wearing all black clothing, black lipstick, heavy mascara, and powdering her face white. Her favorite bands are Bauhaus and The Cure. Pretty startling and different from the cute little backpacker girl pics you see on Webshots!” 8:21:51 PM 4/24/04 “"One kid's story was heartwrenching--he was 4 or 5 and his dad was lost in an avalanche. His mom saw him playing in a sandbox, burying toy people and then digging them out. Then burying them, then digging them up. That's all he'd do, over and over again." yam 07:58:06 PM 04/24/04 I wonder what Timothy Treadwell's kid would have done in the sandbox. How do you get a little Grizzly?” 8:30:00 PM 4/24/04 “Yes, it did sound like the book might be like that --- the discussion at the magazine site got a little hot as I recall. You know how sometimes BPing can become extreme enough until it's a lot like mountaineering, especially in Winter. I think that thread also veered onto the subject of taking small children into grizzly country for some reason(?) Like I said, it was a while ago. Hmmm. I was listening to the Cure back before they was 'Goth' LOL. And I wear a lot of black, but that's just because I can't match anything up, color-wise. One of my roomates back then wore eyeliner once or twice, but I think he turned out okay.” 9:45:10 PM 4/24/04 “Tilt - I used to be pretty "goth", but won't devulge any more than that. I still wear a lot of black also, in part for the same reason you stated, LOL! That, and I just think black looks cool. Wolfeyes - Did you ever read Treadwell's book, "Amongst Grizzlies"? I really enjoyed. He got a bit hokey at times, but overall, it was a really great read. Bummer he died, but hopefully people will see the broad picture.. which, IMO, is grizzlies are beautiful creatures, but don't F around with a creature that could bite into your head like an apple.” 9:53:34 PM 4/24/04 Killing an Arab “This is neither Gothic nor the Cure... Zen in the Art of Archery, by Eugen Herrigel.” 10:05:56 PM 4/24/04 “reading "touching the void" about these 2 climbers” 10:23:08 PM 4/24/04 A Brief History of Time “Got it off Half.com for $9.00, just read the first two chapters...great book!” 9:46:41 PM 5/26/04 “Has anyone read "Life with Pi"? I have to read that one for my June reading for my book club.” 9:59:15 PM 5/26/04 “Just finished up "Unwelcomed Songs" by Henry Rollins. More of a personal journal, sprinkled with liner notes, than a book. Good stuff none-the-less. Dub, If you like the science stuff, without it being too heavy, read any of the books by Richard Feynman. "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" is a great one. Ordin” 10:25:04 PM 5/26/04 “I'm reading "Death By Hollywood" by Steven Bochco who wrote NYPD Blue. It's okay, not great. I like Nelson De Mille books. I've read some, and I listened to others on tape. The Lion's Game is EXCELLENT. It was written years ago, but eerily tells of terrorist activities current with today's events. Another exellent De Mille book is "Up Country". It's a fantastic read. De Mille is the author of "The General's Daughter" that was on tv with John Travolta. Others are: The Charm School The Gold Coast Plum Island "Spencerville" was okay, but not his best.” 10:26:00 PM 5/26/04 “Great article in Nat'l Geo Adventure about these Ukranian Jews who hid out in these caves to avoid the Nazis for more than a year. An avid caver had heard the story, but there was little proof that it really happened. He went over there and checked it out, and, well, I don't want to spoil the story - read it for yerself!” 10:28:59 PM 5/26/04 “mein kampf” 10:39:15 PM 5/26/04 “I'm also reading "Mere Christianity" by CS Lewis...another great book.” 11:07:18 PM 5/26/04 Eaters of the Dead “by Michael Crichton. I watched The 13th Warrior for the 2nd time recently. I enjoyed it much more this time. It intrigued me so that I purchased the book it is based on. I have just about finished it already. Its filled with lots of Viking mythology and archetypes.” 11:27:51 PM 5/26/04 “The Boardman Tasker Omnibus 4 incredible mountaineering stories in one book. I pretty much read climbing books or travel books....” 11:50:06 PM 5/26/04 “"Culture and Domination" by John Brenkman - a bit opaque, but a thoughtful critique of Hermeneutics, Marxism and Psychoanalytic theory (mostly Freud and Lacan). also keeping up with other books by reading the New York Review.” 9:07:59 AM 5/27/04 “"Club Dead" by Charlaine Harris. It's a cute little vampire story.” 9:09:44 AM 5/27/04 “Dub, I read that in January and enjoyed it. I read a biography on Feynman and loved it. Youngest department head at the Manhatten Project. He was brilliant.” 9:10:31 AM 5/27/04 An all time classic “Bowen's Evolution of Igneous Rocks, It's got everything you could psooibly want in a book, like chapters and pages.” 9:14:27 AM 5/27/04 “Dub, I'm referring to the Lewis book. I'm currently reading a Western called "The Bounty Hunters" by Elmore Leonard.” 9:14:34 AM 5/27/04 “Yeah, I really like his writing. Next from him I want to read the Chronicals of Narnia and I heard the Great Divorce was good. I got a ton of classic books at a yard sale for $1. The Call of the Wild, Black Beauty, Moby Dick, and about 8 more.” 3:36:16 PM 5/27/04 “When my kids get a little older I'm going to read the Narnia books to them. Good find on the books. A local 2nd hand book store is trying to get rid of their hard cover books. They sale them for $2. I've picked up 1st edition for all 4 of the Lonesome Dove series.” 3:37:43 PM 5/27/04 “Right now the kids are having the third Harry Potter book read to them in anticipation of the movie coming out. I like to make sure they're listening by inserting my own lines into the reading. It usually goes something like this: "And then Snape, in a fit of pique, pointed his wand at Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and disintegrated them. The End."” 3:41:51 PM 5/27/04 “LOL Bitpusher. The Chronicles of Narnia, should I read them as they were written or in order? I think someone told me the first three books were written after the last four.” 3:42:58 PM 5/27/04 “I don't know Dub. I haven't read them myself. I read the Lonesome Dove books in the order they were written instead of chronologically.” 3:47:22 PM 5/27/04 “Read the Narnia books in order. It's much better that way.” 3:50:57 PM 5/27/04 “chronologically? I can see where that would work better for a kid.” 3:52:37 PM 5/27/04 “In order vs. when they were written? K, I'll take your word HPM.” 3:54:44 PM 5/27/04 3:57:59 PM 5/27/04 “I may have to read them myself. I enjoyed LOTR and Potter.” 4:00:34 PM 5/27/04 “Cool, nice website. I'll bookmark it for reference.” 4:00:41 PM 5/27/04 “Some folks say the Magician's Nephew should be read first but That boook deals with the creation of Narnia and to me it seems like that magical feeling of discovery of read TLWW is lessened. In any event they are all great reads.” 4:01:28 PM 5/27/04 “Dayhiker, if you have read Potter to your kids then they are VERY ready for Narnia.” 4:03:24 PM 5/27/04 “No, I've read them, but not to the kids. My son is 4 and daughter is 2 1/2. I figure he's a couple years away from Narnia. Sound right?” 4:05:14 PM 5/27/04 “Could be, depends on his mindset. I read them myself in the 2nd/3rd grade.” 4:07:14 PM 5/27/04 Jump to Page << prev
