In the pages of this old story book that I read when I was a girl, a book I read to my own children as well, was a picture of me reading this tale to BrianSean's classroom on St Patricks Day when he was only a 2nd grader. He quickly found himself in the pic. I made him smile. And even more so when I suddenly developed an Irish brogue. my poor old story book is falling apart now, but i love being a ma.” 1:28:12 AM 3/13/08 “HPM picked up "I am Legend" last night at the bookstore. I picked up my copy of "Gardening month by month in NC" again today. I still have the gardening bug.” 6:05:41 AM 3/13/08 “Just found a nice book for my daughter... ”6:17:08 AM 3/13/08 “XL, that's just plain mean” 9:14:22 AM 3/13/08 “Doesn't surprise me at all :)” 11:21:58 AM 3/13/08 “Racist much, XL?” 11:36:28 AM 3/13/08 “needs apology! my niece and nephews are 1/2 mexican and they love Dora.” 3:09:31 PM 3/13/08 “We're reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan right now for book club. It's quite good...talks about the practice of footbinding.” 3:12:13 PM 3/13/08 “I don't think he meant anything about the her race, Pamela It's the woman thing he was going for. That's just how xl is. Not that I'm sticking up for him or anything.” 5:43:19 PM 3/13/08 “I'm reading "The Civil War Diary of a Southern Woman" and "Into Thin Air." Add these to the stack of other books I'm reading and still haven't finished...” 5:46:52 PM 3/13/08 “my Irish book is, "The Princes of Ireland". my second Irish book in the last month.” 5:49:38 PM 3/13/08 “tenjen, after you read into thin air, read The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev. He is the russian climber that went back out that night to rescue the lost climbers. Its his rebuttal to Krakauer's accusations about Boukreev's actions during the climb” 8:11:48 PM 3/13/08 “I'm reading "Artic Homestead" by Norma Cobb and Charles Sasser. In 1973, Norma Cobb, her husband Lester and the their five children, the oldest of whom was nine years old and the youngest, twins, barely one, pulled up stakes in the lower 48 and headed north to Alaska to follow a pioneer dream of claiming land under the Homestead Act. The only land available lay north of Fairbanks near the Arctic Circle where grizzlies outnumbered humans twenty to one. In addition to fierce winters and predatory animals, the Alaskan frontier drew the more unsavory elements of society's fringes. From the beginning, the Cobbs found themselves pitted in a life or death feud with unscrupulous neighbors who would rob from new settlers, attempt to burn them out, shoot them and jump their claim. The Cobbs were chechakos, tenderfeet, in a lost land that consumed even toughened settlers. Everything, including their "civilized" past, conspired to defeat them. They constructed a cabin--and first snow collapsed the roof. They built too near the creek and spring breakup threatened to flood them out. Bears prowled the nearby woods, stalking the children and Lester Cobb would leave for months at a time in search of work. But through it all, they survived on the strength of Norma Cobb--a woman whose love for her family knew no bounds and whose courage in the face of mortal danger is an inspiration to us all. This is her story. I am really enjoying this book. Its a fast read and well paced.” 11:14:03 AM 4/02/08 “Just finished it. Its a really good read. I went to look at the reviews for it on amazon and it was either rated really great or really bad. The bad ones either hated the book because the reviewers saw these people as rapers of the environment or it was petty women with an axe to grind against the mother. One was even from a guy who was depicted in the book rather badly who tried to defend his actions.” 7:38:26 PM 4/02/08 Law Of Attraction “Been reading all the books by Jerry And Esther Hicks. Truly some very eye opening material to read. Right now I am reading books by Eckhart Tolle "The Power Of Now" and "A new Earth Awakening your life's purpose". Absolutely awesome books to read if you are in to self growth and understanding.” 8:49:37 PM 4/02/08 A Journey North “by Adrienne Hall. a re-read...however its been long enough since reading it the first time I don't recall specifics.” 7:20:46 AM 4/05/08 “All the BS on this forum, LOL.” 7:28:55 AM 4/05/08 “Rereading Desert Solitare by Edward Abbey I bought a biography about him and thought I would reread Desert Solitare and The Monkey Wrench Gang first to set the mood. You gotta love the crazy old Bas$%^@” 3:52:57 PM 4/05/08 “That book was a horrendous waste of time and wood fiber, IMO GNM. I recycled mine. Literally.” 6:13:18 PM 4/05/08 “LMAO...that may very well be the reason I found it in a moving box today. Was diggin thru searching for my backpacking dehydrating meals cookbook when I found it.” 6:35:20 PM 4/05/08 “Heya Hillbilly, I just read that about 5 months back. Check this out: since being in Phx and the desert, I wanted to read it again and found one at the local library (the front where oldies sell donated used books), and it's a well-read paperback that is signed by Abbey!!! Super awesome! I'll look tomorrow and tell what it exactly says. That be worth anythang?” 12:41:54 AM 4/06/08 “naked ape, that is an awesome find. I do not know if it would have any monetary value but that is extremely cool. Abbey is such a character in his own right. Very few authors could even come close to a fictional character to match him.” 5:40:15 AM 4/06/08 “Just finished "A Thousand Splendid Suns". It was far superior to "Kite Runner", imo. I look forward to Hosseini's next novel. Hope he hurries. Now I'm reading "The Places in Between" by Rory Stewart, about his walk through Afghanistan. Very interesting so far. It's kind of like a trail journal, with drawings interspersed. It's very nice being able to read for pleasure again.” 5:52:53 AM 4/06/08 “more I learn, the less I like. Lots of Morman families live here in the NW corner and 'burbs of Phx.” 1:34:35 AM 4/09/08 “The Quest by Wilbur Smith” 2:59:14 AM 4/09/08 “Moby Dick... still.” 1:32:00 PM 4/11/08 “Call me Ishmael. Currently reading Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy and Looking for Alaska by Peter Jenkins.” 1:41:17 PM 4/11/08 “Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell, Navy SEAL. An incredible, gutwrenching read with poignant, moving bios of his fallen shipmates, stellar winners all.” 2:22:16 PM 4/11/08 “none of your damn business............hehe” 5:44:48 PM 4/11/08 “Dang, I just read what I'd posted last, and somehow only my last sentance came thru. What I'd said was that I'd read SHATTERED DREAMS: My Life As A Polygamist's Wife, great read. Altho the Morman church banned polygamy as a practice back in like 1908, this woman's journey is thru the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Polygamy was then very strong among a Morman sect, and obviously is still strong today, with that recent Texas bust. Like I was saying earlier, the more I learn about the modern Morman church, the less I like(holy keerist! the last thang we need is a Morman PRESIDENT!). I'm just outside of Phx, where resides tons of Mormans. My street and adjacent blocks are full of Mormy families. They are clean-cut, good-looking ppl, straight laced thru and thru. Just across the street from us the nice Momma just hatched out #8, I ain't kiddin, and she's in her early 30's. They are very educated, great-looking folks, wonderful for neighbors, but they believe the kookiest crap you could imagine! Other than being nice and friendly to neighbs, they are a very closed knit society, all buying from one another and keeping all business transactions and moneys inside their Morman brethren. Part of their faith here in the West includes the storage of water and food for at least six months, both of which is rotated thru occasionally to keep it fresh. Google their beliefs when you're bored tho, makes me thank of something like Scientology. I'll admit that the Good Book gives us some kooky ideas, but the Morman Good Book(which I ain't read) must include ideas in the realm of Advanced Kooky....... The book is a good read tho, it's her memoir.” 10:23:05 AM 4/14/08 “Oh yeah, I'd also sed to HillbillyHiker about that signed copy of Desert Solitaire. Here's what the title page says: to Thomas - freedom or death! Ed Abbey Marble August 1987 Hopefully he didn't die before that, which would make this completely fake!” 10:33:17 AM 4/14/08 “The Frontiersman by Allan Eckert I LOVE this book...Lee bought me a new one since my other fell apart!!!...I read it every few years...my heart hurts for the American Indians....” 4:42:46 AM 5/06/08 “I just finished "By Order of the President" by W.E.B. Griffen. It took a while to really get going, but it finally found its legs and now I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series. My kids and I watched Sahara on DVD the other night and it reminded me how much I enjoyed the early books in Clive Cusslers, Dirk Pitt series of books. So I am halfway through A Mediterranean Caper right now. Being his first novel, its not nearly as good as his later books, but it starts the series and I want to read them in order this time.” 5:19:32 AM 5/06/08 “I love Clive Cussler books!!!” 5:34:01 AM 5/06/08 “I haven't read much of his later stuff because his was getting way to verbose in his writing. Where dirk used to take 2 pages to do some outrageous feat of daring do, it starting taking a whole chapter. Its hard to be a fast paced romp when you are bogged down in words. BTW, I just learned the first book in the series, even though it was written later, is Pacific Vortex. I am starting on the wrong book :).” 5:40:28 AM 5/06/08 “div - you need to read, "The Education of Little Tree."” 5:44:52 AM 5/06/08 “Hyway...I remember reading one of his books...can't recall which one...but he rode on the hood of a truck or something down a hill or something.....I thought it was a little much..lol..but fun books.... Dayhiker..I have a friend from Missouri who says I need to read it too...I wonder if our library has it??...who is it by???” 5:55:59 AM 5/06/08 “"The Education of Little Tree" by Forrest Carter I'm going to Mobile today...I'm going to pick it up!!!” 6:04:18 AM 5/06/08 “div - just remember to read it as a novel. He portrays it as a biography, which it isn't.” 6:35:08 AM 5/06/08 “"Do You Think I'm Beautiful" By Angela Thomas” 6:46:03 AM 5/06/08 “Ruby, I picked up "Snow Flower and the secret fan" by Lisa See, at the library last week. Great suggestion! After reading the description of the foot binding I got an email from a friend that showed a little old lady w/ golden lilies. Oh my goodness. I never took the time to check out exactly what a bound foot resulted in. Just mind boggling that those girls endured such a process and deformation. It's difficult to fathom walking w/ such a foot!” 6:54:03 AM 5/06/08 “did, the over the top story lines and a main character who can and does do anything is the fun of a Dirk Pitt novel.” 7:35:35 AM 5/06/08 “Dayhiker and div The Education of Little Tree is one of my favorites. I'm reading it chapter by chapter at night to my little ones. Yah read it as a novel, altho he touted it as biographical, later it bacame evident that was no F Carter background. Actually, he was a devout Clan zealot(perhaps leader, I cain't fully remember now) somewhere in the South. None of that is in the book tho. Reading to my kids makes it like my 5th or 6th time reading it I guess. My kids favorite quote: "I could tell right off she was a Christian."” 9:00:39 AM 5/06/08 “ape - I remember you and I talking about this now. Carter is from Oxford, AL. I live 30 minutes away. Another book written by a local author is, "It's All Over But the Shoutin'" by Rick Bragg. He's a former NYT reporter. The book is about growing up in the rural South in the 50's and 60's. How old are your kids? My 8 year old might just now be old enough for this one. I really enjoyed reading it. That might be a good one for just before our yearly Smokies family camp.” 10:22:40 AM 5/06/08 “Hidey ho dayhiker, my littles ones in the next cupla months will be 10 and 8 (girls), and my minnie me is soon 6. Now while I read it, some of the lesser "ugly" words I read aloud and they giggle, but the bigger ones I change as I read it. My girls are very well read, so I'd have no problem whatsoever with them reading it on their own. And before your Smokies family camp, it would be PERFECT! Also, check out these on Ebay, or the school occasionally has them on wicked sale for fundraising: the Time Warp Trio books and the Magic TreeHouse series. A little young now for your 8 yrold, but great for history nonetheless. Both my girls purdy much churned thru a book a day nearly eating these up. They are kid adventures taking you back to historical events, places, and ppl. Do you just have the 8 yr old?” 10:34:52 AM 5/06/08 “I haven't heard of Time Warp Trio. My son has the whole Magic Tree House though. 8 (boy), 6 (daughter), and 20 months (daughter)” 12:58:41 PM 5/06/08 “I am in the middle of Three Cups of Tea. Excellent reading but it makes me think I have wasted most of my life.” 1:01:11 PM 5/06/08 “I keep wanting to read that one since I've seen it mentioned on latta.” 1:28:03 PM 5/06/08 “Awe dh what a nice fambly, I hafta say tho that I'm dang glad to be outa daipers and formula, and blocked stairs and childlox. Whew! But.... this is the year we will go braw shopping, and we'll alltoosoon be asking like Deliverence "Did she bleeeeed." "She bled."” 2:58:19 PM 5/06/08 “What you tawkin'bout chili?” 2:59:38 PM 5/06/08 Jump to Page << prev
