I definitely agree! I need to get in touch with my unconscious!” 3:16:15 PM 4/23/03 “I'm a little over 200 pages into Stephen King's "Dreamcatcher". Fantastic book so far, very creepy! It's like a cross between "The Tommyknockers" and "It". I finished Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" earlier this week. FANTASTIC book, probably within the the top three I have ever read. Anybody read it?” 3:59:00 PM 8/22/03 “Anthropologist on Mars.” 4:03:38 PM 8/22/03 “I'm on pg 159 of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.” 4:14:06 PM 8/22/03 “I'm reading "The Big Sky" by AB Guthrie. It's part I of a 3 book series. In this one a teenager leaves Kentucky and heads West to be a mtn man about 1830. This is at the tail of the mtn man era. The writing and some of the deeper introspective points really remind me of Lonesome Dove. So far it's a really enjoyable book. I'll read the other two. The next one takes place in the late 1840's. The last one in 1880 in Montana during the cattle boom. The book was written in 1940. The author was from Montana so he probably knew some folks that had actually come through the cattle boom. Granted, they'd have been old, but first hand knowledge is pretty nice.” 4:14:35 PM 8/22/03 “That sounds interesting, dayhiker. I may have to look into them.” 4:20:51 PM 8/22/03 “Dr Sacks wrote a book titled "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" "An Anthropologist on Mars." Dr. Sacks chronicles fascinating case histories of unusual neurological disorders---from Tourette's Syndrome to autism to colorblindness. My favorite vignette is the surgeon with Tourettes Syndrom who tics, but not in the operating theater and how he has been accepted in his community as a capable surgeon. (Its non-fiction)” 4:21:27 PM 8/22/03 “Artex...it's on ebay now for $1.49 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3545375608&category=41513” 4:38:06 PM 8/22/03 “More info for artex. Book II is called The Way West. Fast forward to 1846. A mtn man that disappears about half way through book I reappears to lead a group on the Oregon Trail in 1846. Book III is called These Thousand Hills.” 4:44:15 PM 8/22/03 I'm reading currently... “the collected works of Carl Sandburg The new Hillary Clinton book Stories of a Rocky Mountain Ranger (second time) History of the Battle of Guillford and I got a stack of 9 other books to finish by years end...” 4:46:17 PM 8/22/03 “ I'm reading two books right now: "Goodbye, Darkness," by William Manchester, and a sci-fi trilogy, "Dancers at the End of Time," by Michael Moorcock. Manchester's book is an autobiographical account of his experiences as a Recon Marine in the Pacific War. It jumps back and forth between "present day" (1975) and the war years. So far, it's completely riveting. I highly recommend it. Moorcock's trilogy is about the human race literally billions of years from now. This is a very whimsical work of fiction, but it has some strange undercurrents and seriousness to it that keeps me reading it. I'm also enjoying this "book" as well (as stated, it's really a trilogy: "An Alien Heat," "The Hollow Lands" and "The End of All Songs." I'm half-way through the last book now). 4:48:14 PM 8/22/03 “Passage to Juneau,by Jonathan Raban” 5:00:26 PM 8/22/03 “A buck 49? Gee, don't think I can afford that right now, LOL! Actually, I'm probably going to make a trip to this really cool used book store here in town sometime next week. I'll see if they have them there. Long live used book stores.” 5:05:36 PM 8/22/03 “I am still trying to get through with Backpacker magazine I picked up in Indianapolis to pass the time in the evenings. What a worthless piece of #&%!$.” 5:07:15 PM 8/22/03 “Put it in the bathroom for emergency cleanup use. Or perhaps in the next privy you pass on the trail. I can't think of a better editorial comment on the mag than that.” 5:10:28 PM 8/22/03 “Good point chili. Just finished "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Krakauer. Good read, a bit dry at times, but classic Krakauer. Next up, "A River Runnig West" by David Worster From what I understand, a good read about the Powell expedition through the uncharted Grand Canyon.” 5:12:00 PM 8/22/03 “"Love Medicine" Louise Erdrich no its not a chick book! even though it was written by a woman and has "love" in the title....its about 2 families of north dakota chippewas....fiction.... a book i read several months ago that i suggest......"life of pi" by yann martel.....very spiritually uplifting” 6:14:27 PM 8/22/03 “I am reading "Wounds Not Healed By Time" about forgiveness and repentance, by Solomon Schimmel. He discusses the Christian and Hebrew culture relating to forgiveness, justice, repentance, etc. using biblical and historical references. It is very interesting. A lot of discussion of the huge feuds between ethnic groups, the smaller feuds between families, etc. He discusses how some people will not forgive until the guilty have apologized and made reparation in some way to the victim. How some people do not forgive until they have exacted retribution, even if in secret (I know a few ladies in my community who hold to that law). And then some people will turn the other cheek no matter how badly the other person hurt them, and even without an apology. When I picked up the book, I never thought that the subject was the backbone of any system of law and punishment.” 8:06:42 PM 8/22/03 “Just got the new Tom Clancy book. It looks slighty thinner than his previous few..maybe he's cured of his ...disease...novelistic diarrea” 8:10:35 PM 8/22/03 “I think I am going to read that backpack book again called "How To Shi! in The Woods" Great book. 8)” 8:12:28 PM 8/22/03 “Mike, you backpack almost every weekend. You haven't been holding it in all this time, have you?” 8:20:06 PM 8/22/03 “"Under the Banner of Heaven" by John Krakauer.” 8:36:42 PM 8/22/03 “No I just think its a funny book! 8)” 8:59:50 PM 8/22/03 lizs “the into thin air guy? whats this one about?” 9:07:39 PM 8/22/03 Under the Banner of Heaven “It's about Mormon's and the crazy stuff they do, I believe” 9:50:04 PM 8/22/03 “Crazy???? I have been there before! 8)” 9:51:19 PM 8/22/03 God Save the Sweet Potato Queens “It is soooooo funny! It came along right when I needed a good laugh. I recommend it highly to all women, but you men...... well.. It would just pi$$ you off. I am going out and get me a tiara this week to wear around when I'm feeling low. Its recommended in the book. LOL These gals are a hoot. Once they got revenge on a rabid non-smoking ex-husband of one of their number by sitting in his closet and smoking cigarettes for an hour! Not one of them was a smoker! Ingenius.” 9:40:10 PM 8/23/03 “Martha Inc. by Christopher Byron. It's a very well-written book, analyzing how her behavior patterns have developed over her life. I'm only on Ch. 2 so far, but the prologue was a doozie. I just picked up another book this evening, though it'll be a while before I can get to it. "Prince of Ayodhya," by Ashok Banker. It's a novelization of the Ramayana, a pretty major collection of Hindu mythology.” 10:16:16 PM 8/23/03 “"The Wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh"” 10:27:53 PM 8/23/03 “Just finished Michener's "Mexico" and now I'm working on his novel "Alaska". I'll hit up "Hawaii" next.” 2:51:58 AM 8/24/03 “treebait....me too... i just started The Ramayana...this novelization is by someone who writes under the name Krishna Dharma what an adventure...and a good love story too” 6:57:49 AM 8/24/03 “Artex I loved the Da Vinci code. I have now started reading the books he used for research. It is really interesting.” 7:07:15 AM 8/24/03 “I tried "Alaaska" but only got about half way through it. I got to through the part where the Russian settled the land. It was loooong.” 7:19:15 AM 8/24/03 “Tango - yeah, The Da Vinci Code was incredible! What's cool is that all the historical stuff in it is supposedly true. Now we know why the Mona Lisa is grinning.. and how she got her name. :-)” 9:16:19 AM 8/24/03 “"How to win friends and influence people" -Dale Carnigie "Guide to Investing" Robert Kyosaki "The rise of Theodore Roosevelt"- Ed Morris I read about 3 books at a time to keep my ADD undercontroll.” 10:02:01 AM 8/24/03 “"The rise of Theodore Roosevelt"- Ed Morris They better be saying good things about my ancestor! :-)” 10:09:58 AM 8/24/03 “There is a short Michener book about the Yukon. It was a subplot of "Alaska", but the editors made him take it out. It is pretty good. "Journey","... Michener's 1989 novel follows a British expedition's doomed trek across Canada during the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush." I like Alaska. I read it before I ever new I would move there. It has the same feature of most of his books that turns some people off and that is the extensive natural history and historical background. If you can get through that, it is worth it because it sets up the rest of the book.” 10:54:00 AM 8/24/03 “"How to win in Poker"” 8:07:52 AM 8/26/03 “Teeth of the Tiger by Clancy is pretty damn good, he doesn't kill this one with too much plot...and it leaves it open for a new one very soon i'd hope” 8:18:09 AM 8/26/03 “My wife bought "The Da Vinci Code" and gave it to me for our anniversary. I don't read mysteries, but this one ain't half bad. You get to learn some things about art as you read the story.” 8:50:57 AM 8/26/03 “I'm just cracking open the book Journal of the Dead, the story of the 2 friends that went hiking in the New Mexico Desert and got lost.” 10:26:30 PM 3/30/04 “Sounds good! Jus started "The Devinci Code". Scarey stuff.” 10:28:05 PM 3/30/04 my favorite “"The Lovely Bones" Alice Sebold” 10:29:43 PM 3/30/04 “Pamster, you may want to read Angels and Demons (by Dan Brown--same as DaVinci Code). Very good!” 10:30:37 PM 3/30/04 “Scorthfire- I loved that one! Very good read!” 10:31:09 PM 3/30/04 “Me too,. it's my all time favorite book! I absolutely LOVE her description of what her "heaven" is like.” 10:31:42 PM 3/30/04 “"Brave Men, Gentle Heroes" by Takiff. It is about WWII fathers who had sons who served in Vietnam. Interesting premise. Lots of action stories. Interesting getting "no spin" comments from Viet Nam vets about the war they fought it. We didn't hear about the day-to-day action they were in. Good book if you are into military action and history.” 3:24:10 AM 3/31/04 “The Hunt for Bin Laden, which chronicles the Green Berets' work in the 'Stan. Kicking butt and taking names over there.” 4:10:23 AM 3/31/04 “"Our lady of the Forrest" by the guy who wrote "snow falling on cedars", whatever his name is. It's okay. Only halfway through it though, it's been a slow starter.” 7:53:45 AM 3/31/04 “Tom Clancy Teeth of the Tiger. Great book about what we should be doing(and who knows mabey we are :) )with terrorisim and terrorists. Again kinda scary stuff. But he sure makes a good read!” 7:55:33 AM 3/31/04 Jump to Page << prev
