My bad Gordon... I was reading about one of the trails was made from the gold rush wagons... Not that they mined around there. This would be the reverse of Too Much Information. Thanks for straighting me out.

As far as the trip goes, I should know by Thurs or Friday this week as to how many days I have to play.

The Ishi Wilderness doesn't have gold rush background, but very interesting history nonetheless. It's named after a Native American many called Ishi, who was reputedly the last remaining member of the Yana Indian Tribe. Great reading, check out this link http://www.library.ucsf.edu/sc/hist/ishi/ for some basic info.

Great spot to visit, lots of interesting CA history.

So did I get some bad Sushi or what? I was checking out the links on Ishi, and I swore I read it... Okay.. I am going back to my corner.

There was an Indian tribe.. Right? (just kidding)

The Lassen Emigrant Trail was used by wagons for about two years. It follows the main ridge dividing Mill and Deer Creeks. That route was abandoned after the discovery of Beckwourth Pass (or Beckwith, alternative spelling) farther south. The new route was faster and easier so the Lassen trail fell into disuse.

As a side note of interest -- after a fire in 1990 a complete set of iron hardware from an 1848 vintage wagon was discovered in the burn, down a steep side ravine from the Lassen Trail. The iron parts are now in the Tehama County Museum. The wooden parts were long gone.

Where ya' going?
Not that I can make it. Sounds fun though, I lived in the East Bay area for 8 years.

If I were going to do a weekend or multiday trip from Sacramento in March, I might go to Lassen. The Grants Grove/Wilsonia area of Kings Canyon can be fun in early March.

So what are we looking at? Day hike? Overnight? Ishi Wilderness? For a day hike that would be a little far from Sacto. I'm not available for Sunday so I would be most interested in a day hike, maybe Desolation/Tahoe area.

PepperDog,
I thought we would all meet either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning at the Black Rock campsite in the edge of the Ishi. We could then use the campsite as a base camp and do out and backs from there. Will that work for you?

Cool, if the dates don't jive with a 10 day, I can make this......

errr, exactly what am I making, it sounds like Ishi or some where around there...anyway it's close enough to Lassen for me to get there fast....

If it is around Ishi...I know some super secret climbing areas near there....

It would be great to meet you all, and see the nymph again.....

Geez!!!! This trip came up fast! Guess you can take us off the list. Just checked the map, and its almost 550 mi each way. Probably a little too much driving for a weekend trip. 300-350 mi one way is about my limit. I'll have to catch you guys next time!

Details.....
I called the Rangers office in Chester, Ca today. They were getting snow but assumed the Ishi area was getting rain. The drive in is very steep and there is concern about getting back out without 4x4. I do have one, so we will see how it goes.

I also picked up a campfire permit for the group. I'm bringing a 2 burner camp stove so if anyone wants to skip packing a stove, that's fine. Hope to see ya'll soon!

Leatherneck - sorry I never got back to you last week - work was pretty heavy and I have been fighting bronchitis since late January so going on a camping trip sounded less and less like a good idea. I was looking forward to meeting some more TTers.

I hope you had a good camping trip and have fun in Elk Grove (garden spot that it is). You are actually very close to a couple of great bird watching areas, the Consumnes River Preserve and Stone Lakes (I think it is called) if you have the time and interest.

Tommy! KeeterDog had a marvelous time for such a senior citizen. She got to see cows and everything. I gave her the opportunity to run for about 1/2 mile in the snow and she wasn't postholeing. Imagine THAT! Har har har.... So, when do you think you'll come back to these parts?
