All the stuff on the other thread was fun (with the possible exception of the advice to kill your parents in their sleep - but hey - what do I know?), but you might like some practical advice - not about Basic, everything's changed since I was an officer cadet.

About job interviews, you know about appearance and eye contact, but here's what the professional head hunters tell their clients:

There are two parts to the interview, elimination and selection. Elimination is the easy part (avoid bright colours, esp. red and green - go with blues and greys, don't chew gum or try to be a comedian).
Elimination:
1. The @sshole question: Why do you want to be what you want to be? or Why do you want the job? Be prepared for this and don't mention money.

2. They ask you questions (Do you have any experience? No, BUT...).

3. You ask them questions ('That's fine,' they say. 'do you have any questions about the job?). Have a couple prepared.

Then everybody smiles and nods, and you call your professional and tell him eveything went swimmingly and he will ask you ONE question: 'Did you ask for the job?' and if you answer, 'Well, not in those words...' he stops listening.

Selection

1. ASK FOR THE JOB. This is the second most difficult thing you will do. You say, 'I WANT THE JOB! or 'I'M THE PERSON YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AND I WANT THE JOB.'

2. The you shut the f*ck up. That is the hardest thing you will ever do. Make certain they speak first.

3. People like to put off decisions and after the interviews they will forget your face no matter how many notes they took, UNLESS YOU'VE ASKED FOR THE JOB, then they won't forget you. You will get some form of we'll call you.

4. Ask WHEN? This will establish a relationship of obligation. Don't be afraid to try, 'Can I call you?'

Good luck.
