“Hey how many of you guys would be interested in a used gear selling system on thebackpacker.com? It would all be free of course. I think that would be awesome. Geartrade.com charges you 10% when you sell something. What a rip-off”

“Great idea but I'm yet to find a gear exchange board that asks reasonable prices for used gear. To me its not worth the time or effort to buy used gear if your going to only save $5-10 bucks. Backpacker Magazine has its gearXchange but most items are only a few dollars off retail price. Also, customer satisfaction and buyers security are also an issue. But sounds great if you can get it to work.”

“First I'm seeing if I can get some interest in the program so we can go to Matt, the webmaster to get a system setup on this site. Second prices are all up to you because you set the price so the host would have no control of the price. The good thing is that people would probably not charge as much because they would not be charged the 10% fee for selling.”

“We don't need to be bound by all the previous attempts at a gear exchange. We could simply post a thread and put the gear we have to sell, with photos or whatever, and then perspective buyers could contact sellers via e-mail. I know that a few people on here have sold/bought gear from others in much the same way. Use one thread for all the gear, or even have like a tent thread, and a pack thread, etc.
Keep it simple.”

“seems like it would work. i havent been here that long, but it doesnt seem to me like rip offs would be too big of an issue. as much gossip that flies on here, someone would only be able to rip somebody else off once anyway before everybody knew about it”

“I have a mountain Hardwear Nightview tent...I want to buy the MH Muir Trail. I paid $369.00 for it 1 year ago. It has been used 7 or 8 times. It was used in the Everglades during Hurracaine Gordon, not a drop of rain has seeped in. It weighs in at @9 lbs with EVERYTHING. total weight. will sleep 2 very comfortably. I would want $300.00 for it. There is nothing wrong with this tent, I am looking to buy another Moutain Hardwear, smaller for just myself. I guarantee that it is in prime shape.”

“I have some stuff to give away free.I think that any old gear I have I should give to someone that is new to backpacking becuase I do not want to make a buck off old gear.So if you guys want to start something on how to get free gear to new backpackers please let me know how to do that.

“dcumba99p - I bought one of those Texsport in a can bivy 2 man tents. What a piece of Sh!t!! I bought two (one for me and one for my sis). Both screwed up some how and by putting together pieces from both were we able to get one tent. On mine, damn tent pole snapped on me the second trip I used it. I aint's gots nothing good to say 'bouts Texsport stuff, sorry.....”

“They don't really make a tent in a can, do they? I was being sarcastic because most of the products are crap. Never again. At the moment I am "tent-less"--thought I got a deal on a tent online but that turned into a donation of $100 on my part. Live and learn.”

Who's gonna buy my tent?..its a great tent. I also have a Kelty Trekker, womans model, been used a few times, belonged to my former wife, I kept the pack, got rid of her...solid choice.”
