I have the pocket rocket(haven't used it in the field yet)and the instruction sheet say's not to use a windscreen because the canister could explode. Does anyone have any comments regarding this? Do you have problems using the stove in high winds?

A windscreen also acts as a heat reflector. If the fuel cannister overheats it will go boom. If you use a funnel-type winscreen/heat reflector and block the air intake holes unburned gas will collect around the burner and go boom.

I like to use a funnel shaped piece of foil mainly as a heat reflector to increase efficiency, etc when it's really windy or extremely cold. It's not really necessary, though. It works fine in wind without it.

I have one and it works real well in the wind. If it's real bad and I need a screen, I just use my frisebie (another plug. very handy item)

You can also use your body as a windscreen of sorts if you are not tucked away in your tent with one arm reaching outside.

the canister heating up shouldn't be too big of a problem. that part gets so cold when you use the stove. if you need a windscreen, just use one from another stove but don't put it all the way around, just use it on the side the winds coming from. i don't think you really would need one, though.

Didn't you make a Pepsi stove P-fresh? I found out just how quiet and light those were this weekend. My pocket rocket is loud - but also quick and easy to use.

I use the pocket rocket. And have had to create a screen to protect the flame a couple of times. However, I moved it far enough away from the unit to be safe. And usually down behind large rocks to help as a natural windbreak... It is a great stove..... Lights easily ever time. And very little maintenance....
Another note:The fuel canisters are usually cold when in use.

pocket rocket
How long do those little 7-8 oz. cannisters usually last?

I finally figured out what kind of mileage I get out of my Dragonfly, but I'm ready to chunk it if I can save some weight.

I only boil water. Three meals a day plus coffee in the morning and something hot to drink before turning in at night and it usually lasts 5-6 days.

That is about the same as I get out of my fuel as well. Give or take a meal. Remember to cover the pan tho.. Something I learned to make my fuel stretch even farther.

nigal has a good suggestion that works as it pertians to the 'Rockets cannister cooling down and effecting the output. Stick it in a pan (just a little wa wa does the trick) of H2O and the thing runs great. Even with the little small cannisters. Didn't believe it 'till I tried it. Thanks, nigal!!
