“Thanks for the good wishes. Yeah, my wife is a special one. She paid for dinner, too. Plus, she probably figured I'd bought/will buy myself all the gear that I want.

The best news of the day was when my 16-year-old daughter called me and, as we talked about this getting older thing, she asked if I'd take her kayaking and whitewater rafting this summer. I said sure, but will she go backpacking with me, too? And she said YES! She has been enjoying mtn. biking, and she has decided outdoor activities will help keep her in shape for gymnastics. So I have to find the perfect first overnight trip for us here in the Northwoods.”

“So I can still cling to the hope that my son will eventually turn his gaze away from the girls long enough to go backpacking with me again?”

Well, that's a tough call for a teen-aged boy (am I guessing the age right?) But perhaps once he gets into college....or find a girl he likes who is into backpacking (or willing to give it a try).”

“okay skully, here's how you get his friends interested:

Buy some skimpy workout clothes, and leave them lying around the house. When his friends come over, act embarrassed and quickly gather them up, calling them your "nasty backpacking clothes". That'll pique their interest.

Of course, when you actually get them to go backpacking, wear whatever you would normally wear.”

“Good luck Skullcap, I'm in the same boat. Makes it tought to get out. It never seems fair to leave my wife home with the hellions while I go do may favorite thing.

I've been scanning some old photos. We never really backpacked with them, but lots of camping and hiking, canoeing, skiing etc. It has made me thankful for the years I had when my now teen boys DID hike and camp. My hope is that they will come back to it as young adults.”

“High schoolers... what a wonderful frustrating time of life. We did everything we could when our three were that age to keep them involved in family activities. We bought season ski passes, took them boating and hiking and made trips to Mexico. We found that if each kid was allowed to take a friend on these excursions that they were willing and happy to go. This meant we often had six children but everyone stayed happier that way. If you can the kids should be the ones to choose what to do. The grown ups should avoid any lecturing--just have a good time. Talk about whatever comes up and try not to be judgemental.”

“I had an excellent evening. I went for my evening run down the road with my dog. I live out in open farm country. It was 35 and calm, and we timed it to watch the sunset. It was a great red firery sunset. My dog lives to go for runs.

I'm so glad the days are getting longer.”
