Wet Bag
From time to time my bag gets wet. Most of the time its because I end up at the bottom of my and the rain or the heavey dew gets the bottom of my bag wet. Then I have to deal with that wetness for the duration of my trip.

Been thinking of a gortex cover. nylon cover

Can one water proof a sleeping bag with a silicone spray product?

or should I just stop #&%!$in and suck it up and quit complaining

Here's An Idea...
Maybe a garbage bag over the foot of your bag?

A spray DWR would help, but don't put a garbage bag over you sleeping bag. Your body gives of a litre of moisture during the night and a waterproof cover would only keep it in. I cold weather situations I use a vapour barrier liner inside my bag and a w'proof bivy sack. With the VBL the bag doesn't get wet from me, but a VBL is very uncomfortable in above freezing weather. Good luck.

Maybe learning to pitch a tent would help.

I was hiking the weekend before the Ozark trip and it rained for 10 hours and the sun did not come out all weekend. I was dry in my floorless tent and down bag.

One of the other campers was asking if my feet were cold and I told him I don't even wear socks to sleep in. I saw him packing up on Sunday and the foot of his sleeping bag was soaking wet. He didn't even realize it until he was packing up. He must have squeezed a half gallon of water out of it.

I guess some people should avoid down.

So is your bag wet....or just damp?
If it's wet, I'd say you have a ventilation problem in your tent. Some condensation on the inner wall is to be expected, but you can minimize it by using ventilation. If it's that bad and you are ventilating as best you can, maybe it's time for a new tent.

I've been known to carry my down bag in a garbage bag, just to be sure it arrives dry, but for the reasons Gremlin stated, I wouldn't put the bottom of the bag inside one while sleeping.

Hey bacpac pitchin a tent in sometimes less than Ideal areas because of topography darkness weather or especially when your dog tired happens when your back packing. At various times my bag gets damp and I wish I took measures to prevent that dampness the following consecutive nights.

Is anyone sure that a silicone spray poduct be A oK for my bag? DWR?
Ive been hikin with a ZEN and dont notice moisture in other parts of the tent but then again I dont usually happen to end up against the sides of the tent or where my head is, just my feet where I tend to slip down. Maybe I tend to setup slightly downward, but have gotten some nasty headaches with my feet upwards.

Really don't do it, I did it once, and the humiddity was so bad.

If I where you I would leave the tent flap oppen just a bit to let air in or out. I have/had the same problem

Was that nasty? It is the solution to the problem. If you pitch your tent properly you solve the problem. I am assuming the tent is well constructed.

Somehow I Tend To Doubt That
Even a 30-qt trash bag over the bottom 2.5 feet of your bag will trap enough moisture so the end of the bag gets wet??? I'll bet a bivy holds more moisture in than a small bag over the foot portion, I mean, c'mon, like there's NO place for body moisture to go...how'bout out of the bagspace when you toss and turn over in the night?

Although I havent needed to try it, I seriously doubt that a garbage bag over just the end of a sleeping bag is as detrimental as younz says it is.

try synthetic instead of down,, to prove it, I once doused my fiberfill 2 bag (3#fill, 0 degree) and wrung it out,, slept dry all night!

I use a Caccoon liner, it keeps my skin off of the bag lining. And seems to help prevent moisture build up from sweating....

On a particularly wet night in a substandard rental tent, I threw my pack over my feet to keep them dry and noticed that it did get particularly sweaty. Not as sweaty as a bag with a Vapour Barrier (Vango Ultralight 900 '98 model). I could wring 1/2 cup of water out every morning. Yuk!
