Prescription Sunglasses
My eyes are wearing out before my knees! I need some sporty sunglasses that are ground to fix my vision. Anybody suggest something I should look for?

I want a lot of coverage/no big gaps around the edges.

Are amber lenses better than gray in the outdoors?

Does it help to have a mirrored finish?

It looks like I may be paying ~$300 for Addidas, Oakley or Costa del Mar specs. Am I on the right track?

Thanks, geniuses!

Your welcome
Check out glasses in bicycle equipment catalogs. Try Performance and Nashbar. They have web sites, do a search. They have sun specs that are the wrap around type with an insert to hold prescription lens. Not cheap but not $300 either.

The mirrored ones are good for checking out women. Just don't turn your head.

Before I had Lasik, I had some Smiths with the prescription inserts. They worked great, but the nylon "fishing line" that holds the lenses to the insert frame broke when took a dive on my XC skis.

Orvis Flyfishing Catalog
Try Orvis catalog on-line. Great prescription polarized sunglasses in the difference shades for different fishing, shooting, or light conditions. The prices are very reasonable and they have many styles. You'll have to FAX them a copy of your prescription.

I have a pair of Smith Mainlines that accept interchangeable lenses and I'm sure you can get a perscription lens ground to the dimensions. As for lens color, I'd go for a dark amber or try and find a neutral density coating. They'll perform well in low light. If you get them too dark then you will have problems with them on cloudy days or in the morning/evening.

I've had several pairs of prescription Ray Bans... Loved em' I'd buy the glasses then have my eye doc put the lenses in prices ranged from around 100 to 200 complete. Now thanks to my eye care from work I buy glasses with sunglass clip, the ones I have now are magnetic! very cool

Make sure they are UV filtered.

High elev, bright sunshine, and snow wreak havoc on the eyeballs, so make sure they filter UV.

I used to make glasses. I always recommended using an old eyeglass frame. That may not be enough coverage for you though. Just make sure you get UV protection, don't EVER pay extra for scratch coating. The optician should have tint samples for you to check out/look through. Don't go with photochromatic lenses if you'll ever need them in the cold. They also don't turn real dark in the car. Amber tints brighten on overcast days. Grey is better for glare.

Yeah, just get some regular lens in regular ole frames tinted for sunglasses. Easy enough. Much cheaper.

My Dad used to get tinted 'scrip lenses put in his aviator glasses. I wonder if you can get those at a surplus store?

Thanks, y'all.

Our Wally World doesn't do the sporty sunglasses in prescription.

Lot's of coverage and light weight are what I'm looking for. I've got some amber regular plain ol' glasses but the frames are too heavy, lenses aren't dark enough and don't wrap/cover enough for comfort outdoors. I've liked some Addidas glasses a lot but the optician thinks the quality is bad compared to other brands.
